So I'm workin the bar and there's this girl 22-24 years of age chattin away with a friend of hers. I notice that she's wearing a yellow Lance Armstrong Live Strong cancer bracelet on her right wrist. I make a lap around the bar to make sure everyone is okey dokey and when I get back to her in her right hand is a...

I work in a hospital and you think the doctors and nurses who work with people who are diseased by cigarettes would know better...but nooo...they are always to be fond at the smoke shack outside on breaks.

And they you have these very ill paitients on oxagyen and #&%!$ who cant even breth well who sneak cigarettes in their rooms. I can always tell they've been smoking cause I start sneezzing right away. You would think they would know better by then, especially since fire and oxygen makes a big boom.

Ironic, but that's why they call it an addiction. Same thing would apply to alcohol, no? One would think that if Dad drank to excess and was abusive when drunk, the offspring would stay away. Not the case.

It's everybody's god-given right to be stupid, and most of us take advantage of that right multiple times in our lives, some of us more than others.

i smoke and i also have a lance armstrong pediatric cancer awareness bracelet... who cares? that's the person's decision. my brother had cancer when he was 16, so i wear it to support him. it has nothing to do with lung cancer.

By now everyone knows the risk from smoking, but for some people addicted to tobacco it doesn't matter. It's got to be hard to quit smoking. I know a guy that quit many years ago and he told me to this day he still craves cigarettes.

I have quit a lot of drugs in my life, booze, crank, coke, Marijuana, you name it....by far, the hardest was nicotine.

Funny, it's one of the only drugs subsidized by our own goverment.

smoking...
I am on my 1st week of not smoking after 13 years of smoking. I know the risks and my sister died of cancer but it is hard to give up a habit. Thats why its a habit. its addictive. I think about smoking a cig all the time but I am not going back now that I quit. It is hard but I am going to keep at it....

In my business, I meet and work with a lot of very smart people. One of the smartest people I've known was the Head of the Navy's engineering dept, and few Engineers smoke. He was a chain smoker.

It's easy to think of smokers as dumb people but in a lot of cases they are not.

I think it's a self control thing, more like self discipline.

There is a saying in that addiction community that if you think self control is so great, try it on diarrhea. I don't think it's really meaningful, but it does get a laugh.

To me it's all about what works in the sense of helping people get beyond their addiction(s). The moral point of view (good vs bad) doesn't work in many cases. It's just hard to get "good". The smart vs dumb model also doesn't work for similar reasons. The disease/addiction model seems to work more of the time in that sense that it's a lot easier to be sick and get well (or learn to make healthier choices) than it is to be bad and try to become "good". We are, after all, a shame based culture. Enough, I'm going to an outfitting store and buy a dorky hat for my thru hike.

I tried explaining addiction to my wife this way,

“Ya know how sometimes you get a craving for a Big Mac and you just want one so bad it’s on your mind all afternoon until you get there to have one? Try doing that all day, everyday and then add on physical symptoms like agitation, nervousness, ect. THAT’S addiction.”

I really should have used shopping as an example for her though.

anyone can quit smoking. the real question is do they want to. If losing a loved one from lung cancer doesn't stop you then nothing will.

That his most recent job was "pipe layer"..or is the media making a funny!!! HAHAHAHAHAH

Casey Aldridge, expectant father to Jamie Lynn Spears' baby, eludes media in Miss. hometown
The Associated PressPublished: December 21, 2007

JACKSON, Miss.: He's a 19-year-old pipe layer; a deer-hunting, dirt-bike-riding former high school class president who still lives in his tiny Mississippi hometown. So why are the paparazzi hot on his trail?

Because Casey Aldridge is an expectant father — and the mother is 16-year-old Jamie Lynn Spears.

And to hear Aldridge's uncle tell it, the daddy-to-be isn't quite ready to join Spears — the star of "Zoey 101" and the sister of pop star Britney Spears — in the spotlight.
