Where does peanut butter stand on the chart? That's gotta to be one of the most efficient calorie to weight ratios that exist. AT thru hikers go thru jar of peanut butter like nobody's business...

Where is the chart?

I think butter has the highest weight to calorie ratios.

Why would you make an excuse about drinking?

Oh, that's right. You have accused me of drinking many times. You really need to chill.

Obviously Ped had a drinking problem. This thread is as good as any to point that out.

obviously bbw has a ped problem. let it go, man, let it go.

i remember hearing olive oil has a very good calorie/weight ratio. if youre going on long distance hikes, this would be a very useful tool if youre serious about cutting pack weight and getting the most energy for the least weight.

Hostess makes this fruit cake that is the closest I've come to finding that is the perfect balance and highest out-put vs. weight. It's a bit heavy but the calories, carbs and fat are through the roof.

BTW- Were you still wanting me to be your sponser Ped?

i knew of a thru-hiker that decided he was going to eat nothing but those fruit pies on the trail. decided they were the perfect thru-hiking food cuz of their high calorie content (500 per pie). after a couple of weeks he was seen running to the privy, and came out a few minutes later and said "i dont know what just came out of me, but im not eating another fruit pie again!}

my last leg of the journey, i re-supplied at a store that was limited in its selection and i was running low on cash, so to maximize my money i bought a couple of boxes of em. had two a day for 4 or 5 days. i was getting sick of em, you betcha

Sure Nigal, long as your buying!

Actually I never made comments about bacpac/bbw's drinking or not drinking. Funny how if you laugh a little at yourself, some people want to use it as an opening to skewer you.

My favorites that include:

macadamia nuts - over 200 calories/ounce
Dry sausage and hard salami - about 120 - 160 calories per ounce.
Various cheeses that don't need refrigeration.

I'm buying up all the left over summer saucages from the christmas season and putting them in the freezer for later. I also like the Baby Bell cheese wheels that are little waxed wheels but man, the price gets ya.

No, but I think this is the basics on calories per gram:

Fat: 1 gram = 9 calories
Protein: 1 gram = 4 calories
Carbohydrates: 1 gram = 4 calories
Alcohol: 1 gram = 7 calories

Thus, beer is better than bread.

Oh man that made me think of bar cheese! I'm pretty sure it's a northern thing but OMG is it good! perhaps some michiganders here could vouch for the greatness that is bar cheese?

If you want to know cheese, you should ask someone from Wisconsin.

fat has the highest calorie to weight ratio but most people already carry a months supply of fat on their butt. it escapes me why they would feel why they would need to eat more. i have never understood why people thing peanuts are good hiking food (GORP as in Good Old Raisins and Peanuts). true they are high in protein but they are major high in fat as well. there are much better sources of protein and it's carbos (simple + complex) that you really need when hiking. people have huge stores of fat but very limited stores of glycogen (stored carbos) in their liver and muscles.

remember those repots of people hiking the JMT and drinking safflower oil because it was dense high calorie food so they could go "ultralight"... insane! i would be gagging to get the stuff past my gums the first day... :)
