thanks all.

divinity-

i'd like to come down to alabama, i hear it's really beautiful. maybe you answered your own request- why don't you write an alabama hiking book? if you can write a sentence, you can write a book.

i'll be happy to sign copies.

and i've begun my third book "hiking the allegheny nat'l forest."

Right on! I hope you get a chance to write many more! When I get closer to getting my first guidebook done, I'll hafta ask you some questions and get some professional advice.

A friend just emailed me with a list of 4 different PA hiking guides he was looking at. Guess which one I told him to buy.

It better be good!

My third book, "Hiking the Allegheny National Forest" is about to be published and listed on amazon.com.

Covers a variety of dayhikes in the forest and surrounding areas, and 4 backpacking trails: Tanbark, Hickory Creek, North Country, and Twin Lakes.

The forest has some great trails- a few waterfalls, lots of big boulders and rock outcrops, great campsites, scenic streams, and beautiful old growth forests. Several trails are near the Allegheny Reservoir.

I really enjoyed writing the book and exploring this region.

That's where Minister creek is right? I want to try and have a kids hike there soon. Think it'd be a good place? All those giant boulders to play hide and seek in and climb on. Buddur took Birch and I there a few years back. It was absolutely gorgeous.

Sass,

Yes, Minister Creek is in the ANF- lots of cool boulders and great camping, as you know. I think it's a great trail for kids.

You'll also like Morrison Trail, big boulders, cascades, and camping along the Allegheny Reservoir.

My favorite "secret" gem is the Clarion River Rapids- easy trail with scenic rapids and awesome camping- also great for kids.

Also take the kids to Rimrock and Jakes Rocks- great views, cliffs, big rocks, little caves. Rimrock has cold air vents in the summer, enough to fog your glasses, very neat spot.

Thanks everyone.

Don't know if there will be a next, though I will write future editions of the current three I have.

I thought about the Catskills, but it's pretty well covered by other guides, I think.

I'm also thinking about the Poconos, tons and tons of awesome waterfalls, most have never been covered in a hiking guide.

Sass--

Minister Creek is a great hike. The terrain is a bit rugged for a wee one, but the entire loop is only 6 miles. Triple Fork Camp is a beatiful spot.

No granola, I think the kids could handle it. I've been there. Where we go now they spend their time launching themselves off of huge sand dunes and hiking through them. A hill or two and some awesome rocks to climb through over and into will be right up their alley. It will probably take us two days to do the loop but that's what kids' hikes are like (with little kids at least).

Did you talk to any of the neohbackpackingclub.com folks? They post at least 10 trips there a year, seriously. There are trip logs on file that might be of some use also. I'll get up there myself eventually.

In my email:

Dear Amazon.com Customer,

As someone who has expressed interest in books by Jeff Mitchell, you might like to know that Hiking the Allegheny National Forest: Exploring the Wilderness of Northwestern Pennsylvania will be released on January 10, 2007. You can pre-order your copy at a savings of $2.59 by following the link below.

I'm guessing he hired a couple of male models. Those pansies don't look like they could hike (maybe skipping).

How about "Hiking the Great Eastern Trail" for your next book? You could put pahikes's photo of you launching off Big Falls in Stony Fork on the cover...

The GET is an idea, though the trail is still a work in progress.

No models, just friends of mine. Photo is of Minister Creek Trail, very nice place.

GET
It's hikeable from southern VA to Morris PA on both routes. They don't need to know it's not finished until they get to the end of the book. :)

The first thru-hiker is scheduled this coming summer, wonder what she'll find in AL???

camping could be interesting in parts of PA on the Link Trail.

kioeh,

will all the trails change their names to GET in the future?

might be tough to market a book for the GET, if in reality it's a bunch of separate trails connected together.

Camping is even more interesting on the western GET loop (Mid State Trail) as there is many km in Game Lands with no water leaving car campgrounds and/or motels as the places to go. Far northern PA has similar issues with Game/private lands pushing camping into car campgrounds. More reasons to need a book. ;)

As for the marking, here is the official line FWIW: "Q: How will this trail be governed? A: Local rule applies. The fact that the Great Eastern Trail is being created and publicized does not change the identity of the existing trails that comprise the greater system. Those trails will maintain their identity and method of blazing."

In fact, trail organizations creating two of the hitherto non-existent links have plans to seek input to name them separately.

More reasons to have a book to keep it all straight. :)

Congrats Jeff!! The cover looks great. Of course the people on the cover don't nearly as cool as the ones on your second book. ;o)

What's the next book: "How I lost my keys but really didn't."?
