For my next magic trick, I am thinking of thebackpacker.com hats. So time for a little consumer research. What style of hat do you prefer, baseball cap, knit hat, wide brimmed hat, trucker hat, etc? If you wear a hat while hiking, what types of features do you look for?

Good Idea!
What's a trucker hat? I would like a baseball hat.

Do I have to be serious here? I have a lot of coffee in me.

I like basebal caps.

I did it!

I like Baseball caps, but in winter, a nice windstopper fleece hat would be cool too.

baseball style is good - but not fitted necessarily.

I usually wear a nylon, baseball style hat.

I suspect this will be split by geography. The Westerners will probably prefer the wide rimmed hat for sun protection more than us Eastern folks.

PS. I'm way more likely to get a hat than a patch.

hats are tough due to sizing issues. Anything other than a stretchy knit/fleece cap will probably not fit me. But if it is a baseball style, a soft one would be ideal. One that doesn't have stiffness in the front. And trucker style is sorta useless for rain protection. If I'm gonna carry a hat backpacking it needs to be practical.

Trucker hats have that plastic screen thing around the back of it.

Picture what type of a ball cap a trucker would wear. Foam material in the front and top, pastic mesh on the sides and back.

When I hike I wear a wide-brimmed hat made of supplex nylon. Otherwise, I like a baseball cap or a bucket hat.

I'm actually regular height 5'5", but am small boned. Little hands, feet, head, etc. I used to be the shortest kid and the small bones worked. Now 5'5" standing on feet appropriate for someone 4'9" tall. No wonder I'm a klutz! Nothin to stand on!

Just say no to trucker hats. Yucky! That's so Ashton Kutcher and so yesterday (unless you are a trucker, I guess.)

It's funny I was just googling for dorky hats. I want one to take on my thru hike; something not practical, maybe a little obnoxious and offensive. Something to wear into town or during trail days. I have a few practical ones; I want dorky.

I like fitted baseball caps, either structure or unstructured. For backpacking, unstructured would be more practical, since I have a tendency to roll over on structured hats in the tent and squoosh them flat.

For hiking a baseball style cap made with supplex fabric is perfect. It's durable, dries very fast when wet with rain or sweat and doesn't get heavy when it is wet.

I like wearing baseball hats a lot. However, when backpacking, they are terrible for me because it leaves my ears and neck exposed to the sun. In order to avoid any more basalcell carcinomas, I would have to apply yucky sunscreen, which then attracts dirt and makes me even yuckier than I ordinarily get while backpacking. So I wear a hat with a brim all the way around. It looks kinda dorky, but we all have to make sacrifices. However, such a hat could be far less dorky if it had some sort of TT insignia on it, indicating I was a serious backpacker. So there's my vote. Of course, you could make both kinds - one for wearing around (baseball style), and one for backpacking (full brim). Just a thought.

"boonie style", breathable and high SPF for summer. big enough brim to shade face and neck. Packable, of course.

quick dry nylon 3/4...
with mesh sides and a short soft crushable 2.5" brim. quick release buckle adjustable sizer tab in the back. REI makes a nice one, you could copy it and put the logo ONLY...no text, on the side. Make it classy, not trashy. Tan or taupe. Something that won't show dirt too much.

Baseball Cap. Yeah, definitely a baseball cap.

- It doesn't get all in the way like other hats could.
- It looks sporty.
- The bill is excellent at keeping rain out of your face.

Baseball cap with quick release adjustable size buckle. A choice of neutral colors, beige, tan, muted green and muted blue, etc.
