I would say that a perfect place for you would be just across the border in Indiana in one of the smaller communities to the south. I have been considering moving myself to get away from all the congestion, but I would have to sacrifice more time to get to and from work. I like the commute I have now (about 1 hour and 30 minutes total) daily.

This would be a big problem for you as well. It's cheaper to live in Indiana as well.

WK - Believe me IN sounds great but WAY too far.

St Charles looks perfect! But expensive. I think I'd have to get lucky. I'll check out the stables site. And the St Charles community site shows the bike trails and river (sweeeet!) Remember, I'm just a single working mom :-) Maybe there's another town along the bike routes that could hook me right up. Great tip. Thanks

Hey, If I do come out that way to look for places, I'm up for a lunch with you guys!

Have you look north along the Tri-State Tollway? The times I have headed up to Milwaukee, there are a number of stables. Also the Lippizons (sp?) farm.

Anything in that area is going to be expensive. But try Inverness or Palatine. There are EXPENSIVE spots and less expensive spots.

The problem is almost all Chicago suburbs are expensive.

Okay. Sure. Let's see, I'm only possibly available Wednesday or Thursday, but don't plan around me. I'm unreliable.

BTW, hope none of you had to be at the Daley Center today. The elevators went out. The only ones that were working were the judge's, which without a key you cannot access. So after my hearing on the 11th floor, I had to walk down. You'd think that would be no big deal; right? Whew!!!! I had to carry my 50 pound suitcase. As I walked down the flights of stairs I realized there are four flights of stairs per floor. (Dang tall floors!) I was so thankful I had not worn stilettos today as it is nearly impossible to walk down stairs in them while carrying a suitcase. At one point two big burly guys came rushing down past me, laughing, "She sure will get a work out." Finally at the 4th floor or so, a nice gentelman insisted on carrying it down for me. It took a good 25 minutes to get to the 1st floor lobby. Gave me a real sense of what it was like for the WTC people who had so many more floors and confusion and so many more people to deal with as they went down.

NOOOO! DON'T GO!!!!!
Welcome to Chicago!

First, you must learn to pronounce the city name. It is Chi-caw-go, or Cha-ca-ga, depending on if you live North or South of Roosevelt Rd.

Next, if your road map is more than a few weeks old, throw it out and buy a new one.
If you are in Naperville and your map is one day old, then it is already obsolete.

Forget the traffic rules you learned elsewhere.
Chicago has its own version of traffic rules... "Hold on and pray."

There is no such thing as a dangerous high-speed chase in Chicago.
We all drive like that.

All directions start with, "I-94"... which has no beginning and no end.

The morning rush hour is from 6 to 10.
The evening rush hour is from 3 to 7.
Friday's rush hour starts Thursday morning.

If you actually stop at a yellow light, you will be rear ended, cussed out and, if you happen to be on the south side, possibly shot.
When you are the first one on the starting line, count to five when the light turns green before going to avoid crashing with all the drivers running the red light in cross-traffic but be prepared to hear the horns from all the cars behind you because you didn't immediately start moving.

Construction on Northwest Tollway is a way of life and a permanent form of entertainment.
We had sooooo much fun with that we have added Elgin O'Hare and the I-355 to the mix.

All unexplained sights are explained by the phrase, "Oh, we're in Cicero!"

If someone actually has their turn signal on, it is probably a factory defect.

Car horns are actually "Road Rage" indicators.

All old ladies with blue hair in Mercedes have the right of way. Period!

First Ave, LaGrange Rd, Pulaski, NW Highway...all mysteriously change names as you cross intersections.

If you are asking directions in Cicero you must have knowledge of Spanish.
In Bridgeport, Mandarin Chinese will be your best bet.
If you stop to ask directions on the West or South side, you'd better be armed.

A trip across town (east to west) will take a minimum of four hours, although many north/south freeways have unposted minimum speeds of 75.
The minimum acceptable speed on the Dan Ryan is 85. Anything less is considered downright sissy.

The wrought iron on windows near Englewood and Austin is NOT ornamental.

The Eisenhower Expressway is our daily version of NASCAR.
The Dan Ryan is called "The Death Trap" for two reasons: "death" and "trap."

If it's 100 degrees, it's Taste of Chicago time.
If it's 10 degrees and sleeting/snowing, it's opening day at Sox Park.
If it has rained 6 inches in the last hour, the Western open Golf Classic is in the second round.
If you go to Wrigley Field, pay the $25 to park in the "Cubs Lot". Parking elsewhere could cost up to $2500 for damages, towing fees, parking tickets, etc. If some guy with a flag tries to get you to park in his yard', run over him.

They say WA state cars are not built with horns. People don't beep here, except while going through this one tunnel for some reason.

They are also very slow reactors to green turning signals. If you want to remain calm, don't even consider that you will make the turn on the first green arrow while you are waiting in line to turn.

Not quite right
"The morning rush hour is from 6 to 10.
The evening rush hour is from 3 to 7."

I beg to differ.

The morning rush hour is from 6 to 11:30.
The evening rush hour is from 2:00 to 8.

Especially on the Kennedy!

"The Eisenhower Expressway is our daily version of NASCAR."

Guess again. Try driving I-57.

Fill my ravioli!!!!!
I went to a new restaurant yesterday, and won't go back. The food was passable, but sounded good on the menu. I had squash ravioli w/ricotta filling in a butter and hazelnut sauce. I thought the hazelnuts were going to be pureed w/the butter, but instead they were just tossed on the dish.

The ravioli were way too small and unfilled. I asked for grated cheese to put on it and my waitress looked at my like I was crazy and then brings a teeny tiny bowl with a little cheese in it, and I felt like saying it will take more than this to give the dish some flavor.

The lasagna, oddly enough, that my husband had was not made with ricotta, but just with mozzarella.

It was fun. I met Ruby and Chills and (oops, help me, I am having a senior moment). All great folks and I would go backpacking or canoe camping with any of them. I can't be there next week, but I look forward to meeting Chicago Mark and others over the coming weeks.
