I saw a strange sight

“Sunday, I cut across 321 from Maryville to Pigeon Forge through Wears Valley.

When I got to PF and hung a right to Gatlinburg to go on to Cosby, I didnt hardly see any traffic.

Strange sight seeing that area when it wasnt bumper to bumper.”

“I remember that years ago. I only get to see it incredibly early in the mornings, lately.”

I remember those sort of drives.. and when you stepped out of the car.. oh my .. gosh..

“I've been through there really early in the morning on trips to Knoxville from Robbinsville. It is strange to not have the traffic. On the plus side though - taking 441 through the park one morning, just before the sun really came up, I came around a curve and scared the hell out of some turkeys that were just hangin out in the road. That was neat - I just stopped and watch them for a little.”

“I went to Tattlinburge once. That was enough until all my t-shirts wear out. LOL!”

“I saw it like that in November; all you have to do is get up early, and drive during the week.”

“It's kind of spooky seeing no traffic there. Makes you wonder if something big happened and if you shouldn't be there either.

Or you could just haul butt.

There are a couple of backroads that miss G-burg completely.”

“So what's Pigeon Forge like, thinking of renting a cabin near there?”

“Traffic doesn't bother me around here and has never kept me from hiking the Smokies- I mostly take the backroads. Chili - I usually come out to the Forge from Walden's Creek, but sometimes I will cut in from Metcalf Bottoms if I feel like cruising.

Ever thought that when you all visit this area that other people think it's a good idea too (e.g., weekends, holidays, season peaks)?”

“I didn't mean for that to read the way it does - I sound like a smart-a$$... had a bad day at work...”

“No problem, sg. If I am going to be a local, I guess I better learn all the side routes.”

“Funny thing is its always off season when I'm there and I'm wondering what all the moaning about crowds is all about.

Then once I came off a hike on July 4th.

“Last night, well early this morning, about 12:45, I came down 66 from the Interstate through Sevierville and Pigeon Forge to go across 321 to Townsend. I didn't see more than 30 or 40 cars the whole way through.

There were several sections where I didn't see a single vehicle on the road for a few miles at a time.

That may be a once in a lifetime experience.





Oh, and no, I wasn't on a late night Hooters run. I did a facility inspection last night in Newport.”

“It's very rare for clear roads around here, too. Nice experience, isn't it?”

“I made the mistake of taking Kingston Pike through Sequoia Hills where it is down to one lane... Good grief... of course.. it's West Knoxville so at least Sevierville, the Forge, and Gburg have a reason for traffic...

I did find a way to get to the new location of Smoky Mountain Brewery in the Forge without taking a single main road. I came in from my house on Waldens Ridge to 321 and took a side road behind the new plaza. THERE ARE NO BETTER WINGS THAN SMB!”

YOU CANNOT PETITION THE LORD WITH PRAYER!!!”

“Sometimes when one of our accounts has a problem, I go out and do a detailed inspection to determine the best method to get it under control. Unfortunately, if it is in a commercial kitchen, I have to do this after they close and clean up, meaning I don't get started until around 11PM. Usually, I will spend at least an hour and a half, sometimes more.

So, I had to go to Johnson City. Sometimes I stay up there and take care of business the next day, but seeing as how I had to be in Knoxville and Crossville tomorrow, I decided to come home.

Well, here I am on Wears Valley road, about a half of mile from Townsend at 230 AM when I round a curve and see a car sitting in the middle of the road, the lights are out, it is almost blocking both lanes and a woman is sitting behind the wheel with her head laid back across the seat, passed out.

Well, I think this is bad, but then I think, I wonder if I get out if someone is going to jump out of the weeds on the side of the road and try to bash me over the head and leave with my vehicle.

So, before I even approach the vehicle, I call 911. While I am on the phone, an off duty deputy and an EMT drive up and get out. Soon thereafter there is a Emergency rescue team, an ambulance and a Deputy patrol car on scene.

Turns out the woman is diabetic, but upon close search of the vehicle, she has hydrocodone bottles stuck in her purse, the glove compartment, the console and even one on the floorboard.

It took 45 minutes before I could leave the scene. What a trip. The woman left in the ambulance. It appears she left the roadway drove back on the road, put the car in park, turned off the lights (but didn't turn off the car) and passed out.

If she had been about another 150 feet further on up the road, she would have been right at the apex of what is almost a blind curve and it could have been worse for me.

Don't want to see another one of those for a while.”

“Lucky someone who just wanted to get home didn't come upon her instead of Chili. You deserve a gold star Chili. We need more people who notice weird stuff and do something about it.”

“hydrocodone aint no joke. sounds like she was addicted. i was just recently on hydrocodone for my crushed finger. stuff is strong”
