Landed at 7:45 EST
Lands and transmits data for 1 1/2 hours, lifespan was only expected to be minutes. Scientists are working on decoding the data right now.

First image from Titan's surface is now available. Looks like a rocky, solid surface. See link above.

It's amazing that something man created sent a photo millions of miles back to us of a place like this.

Those rocks look to be eroded.

True, but could just be wind erosion. They said the probe encountered winds of 300+ mph when it was descending.

More amazing?....
That a species like us can accomplish things like this and still allow mass starvation and genocide to exist.....

On a simpler note, why can we get reception from Saturn, but not a decent cell phone signal?

How come I can't place an order at a drive through but I can get reception from Outer space? (Maybe it's the foil hat?....)

Good one SuperTroll! Totally agree.

on the cell phone thing
They use very large dish antennas to pick up the signal. Cell phone users want the smallest possible size. Two conflicting requirements. Since small size wins, reception suffers.

I bought a cell phone antenna for my car and now I never have a problem - from my car.

"Today's descent to the surface of Titan by the European Space Agency's Huygens probe was the most distant landing ever by a spacecraft from Earth. At 10:13 UT (5:13am EST, 11:13 CET), Huygens entered the atmosphere of Saturn's large mystery moon at an altitude of 180 kilometers. Radio astronomers reported detecting signals from the probe indicating that that Huygens began to deployed a series of parachutes to control its 2 hour descent through Titan's dense atmosphere."

Looks like it was very lucky to not end up in one of the methane seas.
