personally i like guys like dean and ventura.

i may not agree with all of their policies, but i like the fact that they're not afraid to speak their minds. they give answers.

here's the way i figure most politition's thought process goes:

anyone>(insert question)

politition> (thinking... hmmmm... what answer can i give that will turn the least amount of people off...)

too bad that actually answering a question without the typical rhetoric is suicide in national politics.

Sacco - personally, I suspect Dean comes off as awkwardly as he does because he is trying to play to an audience. His career is as a creative and innovative centrist - but it was not playin well when his career went national. I think he has tried to reinvent his images in ways that don't fit who he is (and he is, thus, guilty of some inauthenticity).

Ventura, on the other hand seemed to stay the same guy for the whole time he was in politics and seemed, to me at least, to be more genuine.

Damn that Dean for daring to tell the truth:

NEW YORK, Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The uninformed viewer watching TV coverage of this week's Republican national convention in New York might come away thinking that the President's party is built upon a solid commitment to inclusion of racial minorities. Once again, as it does every four years, the Republican Party is trying to portray itself as a "big tent," with room for every American.

But a new book about America's political divisions notes that the 99 percent of all Republican legislators across the country and in Congress are white. The national Republican Party, whose base is in the South, the Plains and the Mountain states, looks to white men as its power base and source of leadership. Even when Republican states have significant minority populations, the elected Republican representatives rarely are drawn from those communities.

The Great Divide: Retro vs. Metro America, a new look at political divisions in America by educator-entrepreneur Dr. John Sperling, calls those states "Retro America," and notes: "Its whiteness and maleness are mirrored in the Republican Party."

Of 3,643 Republicans serving in the state legislatures, only 44 are minorities, or 1.2 percent. In the Congress, with 274 of the 535 elected senators and representatives Republican, only five are minorities -- three Cuban Americans from Florida, a Mexican American from Texas and a Native American senator originally elected as a Democrat.

"President Bush's home state leads the way. Texas, with a minority population of 47 percent, has 106 Republicans in the state legislature, but there are 0 blacks and 0 Hispanics among them
," Sperling writes. "No major corporation doing business with the government could be so white without being subject to Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) action!"

I think it's funny that 6 months into the new term, the Democratic national chairman is the one on TV. His Republican counterpart must be jealous.

In our wonderful new media age, almost all publicity is good publicity. This is especially true when power is derived more from an energized base than from broad-based coalitions.

So, Dean is doing a great job. The key to success is energizing 50% of the country and staying out of the way of the Ohio Republican Party as it destroys itself.

Jerry Springer might look real good after Governor "Heads or Tails" Taft and Senator "Cry My Eyeballs Out" Voinovich.

So goes Ohio, so goes the nation.

I really don't know pedxing.

However, of the 440 members of the 109th Congress, 206 are Democrats and 43 of them are African American. There are 0 black Republicans.

Of the 29 Hispanics, 21 are Democrats.

Of the 8 Asian-Americans, 7 are Democrats.

Was Dean exaggerating? - A little.

Does he have a valid point? – Yes.

Does the right-wing specialize in manufactured indignation when their opponents tell the truth? – You bet!

For the math challenged, 34% of Democrats serving in Congress are minorities. That compares pretty favorably to the 30.9% minority makeup of the US population (per 2000 census).

According to http://www.followthemoney.org/press/Reports/200505111.pdf , 94% of minorities serving in state legislatures are Democrats versus 6% Republicans.

See a pattern?

I think it's really funny that we have a Republican president who continually talks about Jesus, who gives federal money to churches for programming, whose party speaks the conservative Christian line on abortion, stem cells, gay marriage and the like, which sends voter guides out to untold numbers of churches on Sundays and gets direct financial support from televangelists AND people are somehow upset when a man calls a spade a spade and says that the Republicans are a Christian party.

But Dean should have been more clear and called the Republicans an evangelical Christian party. The evolution vs. creation debate is for the evangelicals, not the Catholics. And the Republicans had no problem passing the stem cell bill in the house because Catholics care more about that the evangelicals. And most of the Republicans in the House are evangelical, not Catholic.

The Democratic mission over the next few years should be to: a) Split off 10% of the Catholic vote, b) regain the 5 to 7% loss of African American voters in the past election, c) emphasize the lack of Republican support for bans on stem cell research and the nuclear option so that evangelical support will be suppressed and, d) call the Republicans out on immigration issues to drive a split between Republicans and some sections of the Hispanic vote.

Oh, yeah, and it's the economy stupid.

Dean cancels Columbia visit; GOP cashes in
Dean cancels Columbia visit; GOP cashes in with 'Scream' contest

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Howard Dean was a no-show for a state Democratic Party fund raiser Wednesday after bad weather in Philadelphia kept the Democratic National Committee chairman grounded.

But Dean's absence didn't stop state Republicans from screaming all the way to the bank.
..........

While Democrats waited for the former presidential candidate, the state GOP held a Dean scream contest in anticipation of Dean's arrival. A week ago, the party sent out a flier inviting people to a "No-show send Howard home rally" and garnered $22,000 in contributions, said Scott Malyerck, the state GOP executive director.

"We hope Howard Dean comes back every month," Malyerck said.

The state GOP's scream-off was intended to poke fun at Dean, whose attempt at a troop-rallying "yeah" after the 2004 Iowa caucus became the most laughed about moment of the campaign. Dean lost the next 16 contests, including a next-to-last showing in South Carolina a couple of weeks later.

The scream-off drew a handful of high school and college Republicans who were judged on "lack of poise in appearance" and "extent of angry, insane ranting."

Contestants had to repeat Dean's cry that his campaign was "going to South Carolina and Arizona and North Dakota and New Mexico. We're going to California and Texas and New York, and we're going to South Dakota and Oregon and Washington and Michigan. And then we're going to Washington, D.C. to take back the White House - yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!"

Richard Hahn, a Dreher High School student, won the contest - embellishing Dean's itinerary by adding Canada and Puerto Rico as campaign trail stops.

The contest didn't impress McIntosh, who said it is time for Republicans to "stop screaming and start trying to lead again."

But not all the state Democrats support some of Dean's recent comments.

He recently said the Republican Party is "pretty much a white, Christian party" and said many Republicans "never made an honest living." It prompted Democratic Chairman Joe Erwin to write to Dean and complain.

"I'm trying to recruit white Christians for the Democrat Party, and we are recruiting - white Christians and African-American Christians and people of all faiths and races," Erwin said at the time. "We don't need to ostracize anybody."

For South Carolina Republicans, "Dean is a gift from heaven," Guth said.

The only thing that gives him the extremist tag is his stance on Gay Marriage and Unions. His stance on the war in Iraq is hardly extremist at all. Majority of Americans are anti Iraq War.

I WANT and HOPE there is a true 2-party debate come next election.. but if either party sways too far to the extreme of their base, we, the people, will lose! Dean, as head of the DMC, to me, means we won't have a representattive individual as pres candidate on the Dem side and that concerns me greatly.

Frist is an extreme right wing nutjob (as much as Dean is left wing extreme) and he is one the one that the right seems to be hoisting onto their shoulders. So perhaps you are right, one who wanders.

Ode to Immolation or ('Beware … Combusti-Bull!')
Tom Graffagnino

'Twas the Demo-Left Obsession:
Burning Bush at any cost!
Throwing flames became their passion,
When their standard-bearers lost.
See the bitter root imbedded?
That's Acidic Mr. Dean!
You can sense the pressure building...
Bitter Blues...
And Jealous Greens.

"Yee-Haw" Howard takes the lectern,
Where he fans his fans to flame.
There combusti-bull's the program ...
Immolation is The Game.

Yes, this white, hot fellow bellows...
Hot air blowing...
Fevered brow.
And when ember-members smolder?
"Coals! Flame on!" he says...
"And N.O.W.!"

Howard's had no time to mellow...
The hot 'n' bothered flock to Dean! Ms. Pelosi hands them matches... Then soaks 'em down with gasoline.

********
Plan of action?... Temper Tantrum.
Motivation?... Seething Rage.
"Bush Lied!" 's their broken record.
Someone tell them...
"Turn the page!"

Now their platform's all in splinters ...
Kindling for their "talking points".
My! ... Their rhetoric's explosive!
Fuses lit.... They'll blow the joint!

Could it be The Party's over?
Like a nuke... just up in smoke?
Mushroom clouded politicians...
Who took one too many toke!

Yes, their Mission's Suicidal...
Demo-jihad rages on!
Battle crying: "We hate Dubya!"
(Just back off...
And watch 'em bomb.)

So, while World War Three is waging,
...severed heads and bloody gore...
We watch Demo-Lition Derby
Tip its hat to Michael Moore!

********
Now they finally found some slogans,
That should set the base on fire!
Catchy phrases geared for glory...
Sparking their own funeral pyre!

And that plank they're walking out on?
(Yes! They found a common thread!)
Waving signs they carry proudly:
"Things Look Grave!... Let's Tax the Dead!"

"Angry Dems for Euthanasia!"
"Fili-Bluster in the Streets!"
"Socialize!... Come to Our Party!"
"Support the Troops... (in full retreat)!"

********
Their youth-voter base?... Aborted!
Young Utopians?... Snuffed out.
Still The Party's belly-achin'...
Since dead YU-YU's don't turn out!

Dems are hurting at the polls N.O.W.
Since they've eaten all their young.
Thirty years of Roe v. Wading
Through the Swamp of "Sex for Fun!"

********
They're the Blue-State Angry Mourners,
Grabbing Assets at the door.
(That's the modus operandi...
Mr. Clinton's famous for!)
Now they plead...
"Come to our Party!"
It's the gig worth dying for!
Drink the hemlock...
Have a pretzel.
Sail with us to yonder shore!
