Does anyone out there have any info about the AT in western maryland. This spring my job will have me out there often and I was just looking for someheads up before reaching the trail.

Thanks

there is some decent Allegheny Plateau Hiking. If you're in the Western MD area and want really great places to hike, best go down to West Virginia or Shenandoa NP.

I was just in the Annapolis Rocks/Black Rocks area. So, what do you do that you're privileged to be out on the trail for work?

Also, what so you do that has you in the inner city Philadelphia?

Tell us a little bit about yourself. Welcome to trailtalk!

I'm in Lancaster, PA and there are quite a lot of other trail talkers in the area too. Phantom Soul lives in Jersey near Philly.

Outward bound has urban centers where we take the kids hiking through the city.
I live in south jersey. i have a degree in adventure recreation and spend a lot of time climbing, mtn. biking and canoeing. when i'm not backpacking. i also work part-time at a camping store.

that sounds like a really cool job. I listen to people wine about car accidents for a living. I backpack on the weekends.

its cool work but it consumes a lot of your time. it's been about two years since i've been on a trip that isn't for work.

Welcome to TT killerwhale! A group of us were just out in western MD on the AT this past weekend - 1/14-16. We did a section hike from Wolfsville Road south to the US40 trailhead where it goes over I-70.

The AT in western Maryland spreads across 40 miles from the PA border to Harpers Ferry,WV.

Most of it is ridge walking, i.e. you start at a trailhead, head up for a bit, then hike on fairly even trails (except for a lot of "effen rocks" in some places - inside joke), but there are a few sections of up-and-down type hiking.

There are nice shelters maintained by the PATC and a few campsites along the way, too. Your best bet is to get yourself a copy of the PATC map of the AT in MD - Maps 5 and 6. Most places like EMS, REI, and others stock these maps. there is also a package of maps from Maryland to Northern VA and a guidebook available through PATC. If the stores don't have them, you can pick them up on their website - Potomac Appalachian Trail Club or check out the site for the Appalachian Trail Conference

Have a great time while you're out there! and check out the threads about "Blair Witch" on these boards. We had an awesome trip!

Last weekend a group of six high school kids and two twenty-something instructors camped near us at Pogo Campground on the Maryland AT.

It was real cold.
They couldn't get a fire going.
Some old drunk from our party bopped on over there and had it blazing in just a few minutes.

Green Ridge State Park is one of my favorite close places to get away to (I'm a MD'er). Several good trails, all wilderness. I've been there several times and may set up a trip this year there.
