“As Some of you know, I'm conditioning for the Greenstone Ridge trail on Isle Royale, I planning a week long stay on the Island. I was wondering if anyone has done the Greenstone or been to the Island, If so any tips or some great sites I'll just have to see while there, Thanks ahead of time for all you ~Patrick~ AKA SBH” 10:14:27 PM 1/18/05 “Patrick, you will get a bunch of responses I'm sure. A group of us were just there at the end of September for a week. If you do a search of the threads, you will find a ton of threads with lots of great info. It's such a great trip. You'll love it. And BTW, there are a number of us from northern Indiana here, so maybe you'd like to join one of our trips. I haven't checked your profile to see if your email is filled in. If so, then we can send you an invite. In fact, I'll be in South Bend on the 27th and 28th next week.” 10:18:07 PM 1/18/05 “Thanks Ruby its very good to be recieved so well, I have been dreaming of this trip to Isle Royale since I was like 16, I'm determind to make this hike in sept. however I do understand that I'm not in the shape I was when I was in my teens so I will be doing alot of conditioning hikes, I'm also updating my gear” 10:27:32 PM 1/18/05 “Why don't you join us on the Adventure Hiking Trail. That thread is on the board here. It's in southern Indiana.” 10:32:06 PM 1/18/05 “Its funny you mentioned the AHT, Gary told me about it and said I should take a look. I'm actually thinking about it, the dates seem to fit for me, I just dont want to commit too early, but I will say theres a good chance I could make the trip. What town would we all meet at?” 10:36:14 PM 1/18/05 “Man, if I had a dime for every time someone posted a question about this, I could be thru hiking the AT this year... :) Anyway, I was up there this past fall and the place was nothing short of absolutely spectacular. Here's the link to the trip I did and all the information, reports, pictures, yadda, yadda, yadda, that surround it. Hope this helps! 12:24:32 AM 1/19/05 “Hey Patrick we've been talking about doing that exact thing this fall sometime, maybe we hook up and do it together. Also here are some pics from are trip up there two years ago. http://www.midwesthiker.com/gallery/Test-album Rubes- how late are ya gonna be in SB on the 28? I know some ppl in Elkhart that might buy ya dinner if you're interested :)” 5:37:27 AM 1/19/05 “Hi Southbendhiker! Isle Royale is my favorite place to hike. Last trip I did a good portion of the Greenstone Ridge (and many parts on prior trip) and all of the Minong Ridge trail. The Greenstone ridge was beautiful, huge trees on the Western side of the island, but it's mostly forest, no views. Think about doing the Minong Ridge trail. It's amazingly gorgeous, nice and challenging and the views are incredible! If you don't have it look for Jim DuFresne's book Isle Royale National Park, it's an invaluable resource. http://community.webshots.com/album/88995738kNhMUd http://community.webshots.com/album/89002805tWHeZA last edited: 1/19/05 7:07:19 AM” 7:03:09 AM 1/19/05 “And here's the TR from the trip in the pictures: http://thebackpacker.com/trailtalk/thread/25094,-1.php” 7:25:33 AM 1/19/05 “Hey there UP, I don't know what my schedule will be yet. One of the judges who I used to work for did some unjudgely things and has been charged with judicial misconduct. Those are the days of his trial. Since he said certain things to me, I have been subpoenaed to testify. So I'm not sure what my schedule will be either day. But thanks for the invite. I'd rather have dinner with you guys.” 7:44:11 AM 1/19/05 Isle Royale is a Magical Place “Ruby, get that bad judge off the bench. Good for you. Hey Sassafrass, your group's graffiti is still up on the insides of the shelter.” 7:49:40 AM 1/19/05 “Prosecutor, We found graffiti from one of Le Subtils trips in the 80's! I love reading the walls. =)” 7:51:26 AM 1/19/05 “I don't like east chickenbone campsite. Other than that, I didn't see a campsite on the Minong that wasn't specatcular.” 9:29:19 AM 1/19/05 “great pics” 10:38:06 AM 1/19/05 “Hey All thanks for your insights on Isle Royale, Your personal experiences are something you just cant get from a book or map and I truely thank you, Great pics UPluver, who knows maybe we can link up, I"m planning my trip in September I plan to stay for a week so I'm sure I'll be doing more than the greenstone and quite possibly be back tracking from windigo to rock harbor so the minong trail would be a good fit ~SBH~” 11:01:49 AM 1/19/05 Historical view “There are pics from my Greenstone Ridge trip under my name on Phil's Photo Page. It was a couple decades ago (OMG!), but if you look past the antique equipment, I imagine the island hasn't changed much in that time.” 1:28:35 PM 1/19/05 “There's some pics of the Isle under my name on Phil's as well. Taken during September like you're planning. Moose rut” 2:50:26 PM 1/19/05 “Southbendhiker - Say, hiker, you're just a stone's throw away from Hudson Lake, near New Carlisle. I can remember that lake before they built a small dam at the end and flooded out a road on the opposite shore. And you're not far from Paw Paw Lake, MI. Boy, you Indiana people revive lots of memories for me. ” 3:52:30 PM 1/19/05 “My brother lives with his family in South Bend. But he doesn't hike.” 4:36:37 PM 1/19/05 “I found a pic of me on Isle Royale from my second trip (1989) I was 16. Great memories, Ihope to return soon.” 6:52:15 PM 1/19/05 “Too incredible for words. I tried to write a trip report but couldn't. Here is a link to some pictures. I once learned to do a hot link but I do it so seldom I have to relearn each time. I apologize but you'll have to cut and paste the link. http://community.webshots.com/album/46596661JvhtNg It will be a trip you will never forget. :)” 8:21:32 PM 1/19/05 “And if you go to Copper Harbor and take the Queen out, you might even get to meet Sunshine! :)” 8:28:12 PM 1/19/05 “My pics are from September, as well. Post Labor Day is a great time to visit IR. Fewer people and fewer bugs as every day passes, while the colors go through changes in bands by altitude and exposure.” 10:28:48 AM 1/20/05 “Awesome pics sunshine :-)” 11:20:19 AM 1/20/05
