“I need a free av progam.Any ideas?I hear the latest AVG 7.0 program is not so great...I dont want to dl 30 day trial programs because then you have to remove them which is sometimes impossible and then that irremovable program conflicts with the next av you dl. Anyway thanks....” 2:17:07 AM 1/19/05 “I have AVG 7 and the only problem I have had is with the updates... sometimes they jam while uploading. Thats the only problem I have with a free Virus program...” 7:24:10 AM 1/19/05 “Good free virus program?... ya.. get AOL. * ducks *.. heh.. just kidding -- I swear!.. I hate AOL. I'm just saying that cos of the onslaught of commercials lately. There's used to be a good free one out of Australia that was good.. Panda Software. last edited: 1/19/05 7:28:50 AM” 7:27:42 AM 1/19/05 “used to know a pretty good program... I THINK this is it: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html last edited: 1/19/05 8:04:30 AM” 8:01:46 AM 1/19/05 “RoadRunner and Yahoo both provide free AV programs to members of their broadband services. I believe they both use Computer Associates EZ Armor. You could alway's grab the Microsoft AV they just put out as well. It's free for now but the downside is that hackers love to tear MS a new one and I'm sure they'll find every bug that program has.” 7:08:06 PM 1/19/05 “I used AVAST before and they were awesome. no spy programs or anything. they do send you a registration key though via email.” 7:11:06 PM 1/19/05 PC-Cillin Customer Service STINKS “I have & really like the PC-Cillin anti-virus program. (TREND)I believe that it is the best one out there. The only & biggest problem with trend is that their customer service is pitiful. Actually most customer services are really bad. I had problems (conflicts)when I finally got around to putting XP, a couple new monster hard drives & controller cards on my computer. Finally ended up deleting PC-Cillin. Tried to go to their site & you can't contact them with any missing info. Won't recognize serial number or log in info. Kinda hard to add info when their program won't come up or deleted. Their web site is horrible to deal with. Email is a waste of time. Finally went to digitalriver.com where I downloaded this virus protection. Their website is EASY & first rate. They recognized my serial number & log-in info. Re-Downloaded & found the conflict in the windows firewall. Just closed down the windows firewall. The new PC-Cillin doesn't play well with others. In the older version, I could have multiple firewalls. My brother got a little testy when I sent that "I love porn" screen page with the accompanying klaxon horn to his gov computer. Sicked his geeks on me.” 8:31:17 AM 4/24/06 “The good ones you pay for. I like Symantic Antivirus and Sygate Security Agent together. Symantic has a strong AV offering and Sygate's firewall is outstanding. These are two solid products, but they are NOT free. This is an area where, in general, you get what you pay for.” 9:28:49 AM 4/24/06 “Norton's customer service is rated the same as Trends. Norton's good, but PC-cillin is better.(comes with it's own firewall & stop internet traffic)” 10:34:59 AM 4/24/06 “AVP Antivirus is free and works excellent...” 8:07:57 PM 4/24/06 “AVG, hands down. No comparison if you want free. I think this is the correct link, but search to make sure. http://www.grisoft.com/doc/1” 8:21:10 PM 4/24/06 “I liked Symantec a lot. Seams to catch more viruses as any other program. BUT damn it's a memory hawk. AVG is pretty darn good. won't eat up your resources too much either. I still am wondering if it finds all the viruses though. I seam to get much less viruses on my AVG installed computer then on my symantec.” 9:50:15 PM 4/24/06 2:48:21 AM 4/25/06 “I have Norton Symantic Internet Security and got a really, bad worm last fall...Sober 32..took me over 30 hours, one guys from Microsoft stayed with me on the phone for 6 or 8 hours...non-stop. Upon the advice of good folks here, I installed "Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition" which is a free program offered on: http://www.download.com/ I try and run it every couple of weeks. The Microsoft guy had me install "Spybot Search and Destroy" also from Dowloads.com http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10401314.html I was told that many use only these 2 programs to remove attackers but I still have my Norton plus Microsoft AntiSpyware...I'm probably paranoid but having and getting rid of a worm was a nightmare...it wasn't even my fault...Norton neglected to mention that their old program should be removed before installing the new one. Failing to know and do that left me wide open for attach...it was a frustrating time...” 4:08:58 AM 4/25/06 “I use Norton Internet Security which updates automatically and I've had no problems with it.” 4:37:30 AM 4/25/06 “Fprot is the best IMHO. Free trial easy download. It, is very thorough.” 5:34:18 AM 4/25/06 “My computer tech friend says to avoid free-downloads of computer/internet security systems, I don't know any better.” 5:43:56 AM 4/25/06 7:24:43 AM 4/25/06 “I download free computer/internet security software all the time. Spybot Search & Destroy, Microsoft Anti-Spyware, and AdAware are all programs I've downloaded without any problem. In fact, I'm certain that it's saved many a client countless hours of fixing problems before they occur. One of the best anti-spyware programs I've purchased has got to be Spy Sweeper from Webroot. You get what you pay for. I typically use Norton AV or Sophos for Anti-Virus. Computer and Network Security...it's my business. Take it from a CISSP.” 7:34:24 AM 4/25/06 “My comuter tech friend says downloading spy-bot, microsoft antispyware or adaware while norton is running causes big problems. last edited: 4/25/06 2:45:33 PM” 2:44:40 PM 4/25/06 “"My computer tech friend says downloading spy-bot, microsoft antispyware or adaware while norton is running causes big problems.: didn't/doesn't cause me any problems...I run all 4 of them all the time..I have Windows XP...hell, I installed them after listening to all my computer tech friends...LOL... last edited: 4/25/06 5:31:44 PM” 5:30:54 PM 4/25/06 “Same here, mataharihiker...no problems running Spybot S&D or Microsoft Defender with either or both Spy Sweeper and Norton AV running. Of course, there certainly are different levels of computer techs.” 5:52:31 PM 4/25/06 “Yeh, I had them all running simultaneously at one time to thats how I became so aware of the sayings of the 'computer tech'.” 6:38:31 PM 4/25/06 “Some cable networks (like Comcast) offer free anti-virus software. I have McAfee that comes free with my Comcast broadband.” 9:24:39 PM 4/25/06 “avoid free-downloads of computer/internet security systems, True there is plenty of crap out there, but believe me ask your friend about fprot. It's the one you use to clean up the mess left by retail AV distro's Spybot S&D is a must.” 10:07:21 PM 4/25/06 “yeah, if I could only keep one it would be Spybot Search and destroy...the tech at Microsoft told me they use it all the time...that's why he had me download it...by the way, I downloaded it with him telling me what to do and where to go to get it on the telephone!” 4:26:53 AM 4/26/06 “Avast AVG On Microsoft clients you MUST run an antivirus program and keep the definitions up to date. This fact is is especially true if you are not behind some sort of SPI-based firewall. last edited: 4/26/06 10:43:07 AM” 10:37:52 AM 4/26/06 “I have AVG” 9:32:13 PM 4/26/06
