I have a fantobuloso idea for a thebackpacker.com hat, unfortunately it is fairly labor intensive. I need someone to do some custom sewing. So if anyone owns a sweatshop and wants to have 9 year olds make hats, contact me.

You can actually have things made in Mexico via the internet, but you have to have huge quantities made.

matt - can't you steal some hats and alter them? Then charge us like you're REI to cover any costs?

Actually, you could do that and not need a sweatshop

Note - This is a joke. I love you REI. Please don't revoke my membership. I need you!

I mean, I think you get the biggest bang for your buck...........uh..............

A serious reply (sorry).
Am I the only teacher/coach on TT?

We get stuff done all the time and we have it done locally. The major expense is the template - silk screen (cheap), or embroidery (one eye).

If you don't find anyone, I could set you up, but it would mean importing the stuff from here.

I'm sure a teacher can set you up with something local.

Nice typo TB.

Matt - I know of a embroidery place close to my in-laws that does this sort of thing. When my wife was in there she noticed that they were making hats for the Florida branch of an profesional group I'm in. Let me know if you'd like me to try and find the info on them.

With computers this isn't as big a deal as you might think. My mother in law has a machine with a card reader. She downloads pictures over the internet, uploads to the machine and it stitches away. She embroiders all sorts of things for her grandkids. An embroidery place would definitely have this.

Have you contacted some of your local high schools? Maybe they have a home economics program, or a fashion design program that would be willing to help as a learning experience? (probably would do it for relatively cheap as well!)

Thanks for the support everyone. I was hoping to find a Latin American sweatshop. You know, I'm tring to maintain the Isolationist Platform by keeping the work in our same hemisphere.

I tried a local embroidery store today, but they didn't have a straight line sewing machine. So I tried an alterations shop, and they were going to charge an arm and a leg. I am hoping to find a B2B type company so I can get a wholesale discount.

... and lyra, your banned

I didn't scan the thread to see what responses you had -- but ya.. West Tennessee is KNOWN for sewing sweatshops..

Some of them are friends of mine, and one or two are actually related.. so ya.. let me know if you want me to carry your idea over and get it quoted for you.

I some communities there are "sheltered workshops" for people who are physically/mentally/socially challenged who love projects like this. The quality of work is good, cost is cheap. Anything like this in your neighborhood?

When I was in the Navy we had a local shop in VA Beach that embroidered our hats for us. I forgot the name of it but I've looked them up in the past to see if they could make a couple for me since my squadron decommissioned. The hats went for $10 so they couldn't have been charging too much. They do have places online that I came across to do custom hats when I was looking for some of the ships I had been on. I'll search later and see if I can come across anything again.
