OK, we have dates “June 3-5,for the Upper I-O-WAnna Canoe/Kayak Trip, June 3 -5 (dang, I made the "A" small in the thread title, it's I-O-W-A, get it??? lol) go to trip for tentative details.... or old thread for more info at this time. http://www.thebackpacker.com/trailtalk/thread/35032,-1,1.php Picture of jerbear on chimney rocks above the Upper Iowa, just to give you an idea of what it's like (and yes, there are farms on the OTHER side of the river, cuz it is Iowa, after all. LOL!): http://community.webshots.com/photo/53240491/53240706fkGFAm last edited: 1/20/05 1:50:56 AM” 1:44:21 AM 1/20/05 “Thanks for all the work planning this trip Lizs. I'll speed all the way across southern Wisconsin to be one of the first to get there. On second thought, I'll take the longer route through northern Illinois to get there.” 6:42:59 AM 1/20/05 “LOL, Pros, I used to speed across southern Wisconsin to Chicago. SOUTHERN Wisconsin ain't the problem. Why, they're folks like you and me..... :-) Why, I'd be all up for annexing southern Wisconsin to any of our fine states. hahaahhaa... Let the northern part go its own way. Maybe Canada would want'em. I know, I know... then YOU will live part of the year in Canada. LOL!” 7:55:53 AM 1/20/05 “In 2004, Americans celebrated Tax Freedom Day more than two months earlier than Canadians. Canada is a great place to visit, but I wouldn't want to ........” 10:48:30 AM 1/20/05 “We celebrated tax freedom day??? Why? 8o) Anyhoo... I have no clue if I can go. We'll see what life has in store for me when the time draws near but I'll keep this trip in the back of my mind... now, if I could just find my mind... It was great to see Jerbear again! Is he coming? Uh-oh.... I better rephrase that for him... Will he be joining us? ;o)” 11:01:26 AM 1/20/05 “Where is the closest major airport where lizs could pick me up?” 11:02:22 AM 1/20/05 “so is a canoe and/or kayak REQUIRED to attend this trip? Inquiring minds need to know . . . :)” 11:37:22 AM 1/20/05 “Rental Gary, rental. ;-)” 11:39:58 AM 1/20/05 “Minneapolis. Hey, I KNOW Airtan flies there. That's a 2-hour drive. Otherwise, Rochester's is 45 minutes away... and La Crosse, WI is about an hour... if ya like the puddle jumper commuters to the smaller airports. Can you say "turboprop??" lol So you can see what airline flies where: http://www.mspairport.com/msp/ http://www.rochesterintlairport.com/ (HA! I see this one is managed by the Mayo Foundation!!! LOL! You could be flying in with some sheik for his clinic appointment. heheheh) http://www.cityoflacrosse.org/Airport/airport.html Stovey, another idea... if we get MHH to come (and she'd be a fool not to, ya hear me, Matahari!!!!) she is northeast of the Twin Cites and -- who knows?? -- she might be nice enough to pick up your lame ass at MSP airport. LOL! last edited: 1/20/05 11:47:48 AM” 11:40:37 AM 1/20/05 “Well, gary galore, I have sat my butt in a tube and tubed the river. But you go pretty slow. :-) I am working on a map with my new, lovely, not-quite-what-I-thought-it-was mapping software (refer to mapping software thread)” 11:43:14 AM 1/20/05 “This might be a good trip. I've met and liked all of you except sunshine and she's been on my 'must meet' short list for a couple of years. Wait, that didn't sound right. Oh heck, sunshine knows what I meant. ;-)” 12:45:49 PM 1/20/05 “you don't like sunshine???? LOL! well we better talk her into coming then! So to speak!! And sunshine, I have no clue if jerbear is coming. He just happened to be in the river photo. If you look further in that photo folder you'll find a shot of him as a PIRATE on the Upper Iowa. LOL! STOVEY, another idea for flying in... go to O'Hare and see if you can talk Pros or gforce or someone coming through Chicago into giving you a ride. :-) (why maybe you could have lunch with Ruby??? LOL! How is that lunch coming along?) last edited: 1/20/05 2:44:04 PM” 2:42:07 PM 1/20/05 “I have not met Ruby either. :-(” 2:52:09 PM 1/20/05 “Depending on who shows, this might just be your DREAM trip, STOVEY!!!! MOOOOOhahahhaahaa” 2:54:10 PM 1/20/05 “can i go?” 2:55:49 PM 1/20/05 “Got that right, lizsbaby! I bet I could get with Gary and with both of us trying, get another GREAT butt shot of you crawling into your tent! Hoo Boy! ;-) Can you say, "ScreenSaver"?!?! last edited: 1/20/05 3:05:13 PM” 2:57:40 PM 1/20/05 “OOBrett!!! Ya troll you!!! LOL! Sure.... you're around, huh? Not living off the land somewhere? OR... are you back from living off the land?? hmmmm???! Course, if you're really OOBrett, you can e-mail me... LOL! And give me secret info so I'll know it's really you. Ruby and I met OObrett, **if** this is him. :-)” 3:13:28 PM 1/20/05 “Isn't OObrett one of the nastier trolls?” 3:15:24 PM 1/20/05 “:-) I think he can be, depending on mood. I remember on a thread where he was giving Mapes crap, then Ruby gave him crap and he said, "But Ruby, you met me." And then Ruby said, well, he was nice. I think it's just one of those "online ain't real life" type things.” 3:22:49 PM 1/20/05 “can i go, also?” 3:25:57 PM 1/20/05 “who? me? you have mail lizsbaby” 3:27:28 PM 1/20/05 "online ain't real life" type things “That's no excuse.” 3:48:06 PM 1/20/05 “How many miles is good for a single day? And how about on Sunday, when people want to leave? Am starting to like the mapping software. :-) Can figure river miles” 7:07:42 PM 1/20/05 “ok...so how far away is this????” 8:30:08 PM 1/20/05 “omg...I don't even know where Iowa is!!!!!” 8:32:17 PM 1/20/05 “I thought I posted a thread here yesterday but, apparently not..this isn't TR which eats posts like candy..anyway, hello Mr StoveStomper, Sir who has YET to meet lil ole me....I believe not mentioning WANTING to meet me is not a great way to assure an airport pick up from someone who could easily swing by MSP or Rochester on her way down to I-OH-AWAY! And GForce, there are a few folks who will probably join this trip who have extra boats...of course, since you're such an unreliable person (imagine winking devil face here).................... last edited: 1/21/05 11:28:46 AM” 11:27:55 AM 1/21/05 “mata, mata, mata, silly person....... Of course I want to meet you! I just don't know what my schedule will be yet! Thank you so much for the offer!” 12:22:51 PM 1/21/05 “LOL! Yeah, that Stovey. *rolling eyes* We can only pray for him!! LOL!” 10:03:45 AM 1/23/05 “Lizs....what is the closest town????” 10:08:21 AM 1/23/05 “and....what are the temps about that time of year???????” 10:11:52 AM 1/23/05 “am I alone again????” 10:28:14 AM 1/23/05 “No, divinity, you're not alone. I'm stalking you. LOL.” 10:44:11 AM 1/23/05 “lol, whaddya mean, "am I alone again?" I was just reading your "blue balls" report. :-) Div, are you wondering for flying or driving? I'm guessing driving, since we've mentioned the airports. Closest town of any size, Decorah, the place I called "home" from 1982-2003. Otherwise, well, I still need to figure out where to start this trip and will need some help figuring out what's logical mileage on the river... may have to grab Prosecutor or Stikkie for that. There are nice campgrounds in the little village of Bluffton -- oh yeah, this is all in Iowa. I am about 20-25 miles away from the potential starting point. I'm in Minnesota. Temps? Could be cold, as in say 45-ish, if it were raining. Could be horrendously hot. Tell ya what I'll look on www.weather.com to see the "average" weather that time of year. Gimme a second.” 10:45:12 AM 1/23/05 “Oh yeah, I better KEEP NS on the e-mail list this time around, even if he says he's not coming..... So he doesn't show up, camped at one of the locations, and giving me information up the wazoo on the location (like I don't know... and like I haven't sent out SIX tons of info and THREE maps to everyone, BUT he hasn't seen it cuz he "wasn't coming" and I took his name off the list). LOL! ;-P to NS!! last edited: 1/23/05 10:48:09 AM” 10:46:55 AM 1/23/05 “Looking at May for Burr Oak, Iowa (about 5-ish miles east of Bluffton)....... These temps come from monthly averages. I grabbed the figure on the cusp of May/June. Record low: 25 Average low: 45 (wow, am I GOOD, or what?? See last post or so...... LOL) Average high: 75 Record high: 95 Ave precip: Right around 4". It says June is the highest month for precip. So should have fairly decent water, I'd think. I have seen very, very, very light snow and very cold temps on various Memorial Day weekends, one week earlier. And last year in April, on a Sierra Club trip to Yellow River State Forest it was around 80. So, per usual, it could be anything. last edited: 1/23/05 10:57:42 AM” 10:55:47 AM 1/23/05 “You never know what is going to happen in Iowa. Weather and politics are unpredictable. Red State one election, Blue state the previous election.” 6:49:19 AM 1/24/05 “LOL, oh that prosecutor. Such a card... **rolling eyes**” 10:22:00 AM 1/24/05 “Bruises are blue and blood is red, be careful in Iowa you may end up dead. *banjo music in the background* Mooooooohahaaa!” 12:24:08 PM 1/24/05 “I already got an email from someone in Iowa saying I was "dead meat".” 10:15:08 PM 1/24/05 “Given your profession, I'm certain it wasn't the only threat you've ever received. Just remember, you can't live in fear.... unless of course, it's your wife threatening you. ;o)” 5:55:43 AM 1/25/05 “Hey, I just bought the DVD of "Deliverance." Am auditioning for inbred people and pigs currently. :-)” 6:23:44 AM 1/25/05 “lizs, I believe gojo did a rendition of a wild boar on a trip to ... what's the name of that island he loves? Anyhoo, I believe he was scaring a lovely young miss who had been slumbering peacefully up until that moment. He must have been convincing. ;o)” 12:14:40 PM 1/25/05 Maybe? “I'm going to put this one in the calendar... who knows, maybe it'll wokrj out.” 3:32:52 PM 1/27/05 “wokrj out? did i miss something?” 4:06:19 PM 1/27/05 wokrj “Probably just Norwegian in an Iowan dialect.” 10:30:34 PM 1/27/05 “Norwegian????!?!? No way in hell! You're talkin' 'bout the folks down on the TURKEY RIVER -- next river south of the Upper Iowa -- and it runs through Spillville, Bohemian heaven... as in nationality, NOT crazy, free-spirted artsy community. LOL! Actually, I think Dvorak wrote one of his great works there in 1893 or so. Big celebration in 1993!!” 10:37:59 PM 1/27/05 “STOP IT, Lizs! You're dating yourself. ;o)” 7:12:51 AM 1/28/05 “How did you know I was dating myself???? LOL! ;-P” 7:43:31 AM 1/28/05 “LIZS!!!!! You aren't supposed to talk about THAT! I hope at least you buy yourself dinner before 'dating'. ;-) last edited: 1/28/05 8:00:50 AM” 7:57:11 AM 1/28/05 Lizs “Can you recall the name of what Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904) wrote there?
