Thanks skullcap, I didn't want to try it first, just thought someone on here had already some experience. It was just an idea I had but with some doubts. I use a windscreen but not 360 degree, I open it up some to allow for the heat build-up.

I don't know how true this is, but I read that you burn 20% more calories standing than sitting. So if you start feeling cold around camp maybe just standing up might help a bit.

Continuing the winter camping theme, I was just on a good winter camping trip, with my college Winter Camping Class. PHotos at

I hit the hot springs at 11:00PM, before bed, and again at 6:30 AM, after my igloo partner woke me up. Hot springs and winter camping is heaven.

excellent pictures. I am a little disappointed that no female decided to sit in the hot springs or wouldn't allow a picture to be taken.

Nice igloos, I hope no one was inside while that guy was jumping up and down on top of it.

Ewker: knowing that this could be used as evidence at my termination hearing at BSU, I can assure you that swimming suits are absolutely required, and are always worn. And there are no photos that prove otherwise, and there are no witnesses, either.

Hey, those are great pics! We're doing a Yellowstone trip in a couple weeks and I wanted to try to build a snow cave this year, but the igloo idea looks cool! I noticed the gear sled; I've got one made up just about the same except I didn't cross the poles.

aero, the structures were actually quinzees, not igloos. We only had about 20 inches of snow, so these were the only sheltes that work in that little snow. We usually have 4-6 feet of snow in that area. A brief article about making quinzees is at

Idaho Bob--
Great pictures!

Although when you said "hot springs", I didn't envision an old enameled iron hot tub!!!

This hot springs is a little different than most. There are about 8 old bath tubs next to a big rock, with boiling hot water bubbling out of a crack in the rock. You put a garden hose in the crack, fill your tub of choice, and add a few buckets of cold water from a nearby stream. Then as you soak in it, and it gradually cools, you top it off with hot. On a cold winter night, with no moon and a million stars, its pretty wonderful.
