Hiking to The Dungness LighthouseView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 1 of 1 messages posted.
An awesome day trip “Ford, Rainrunner and Marszit went with me yesterday. We decided to go to the Olympic Pennisula and do Dungness Spit-since there was a very low tide in the afternoon. The "trail" to the end of the spit is 90% beach walking. It is like 10 1/2-11 miles rt. Rainy had never done this hike, and for Marszit and me, it had been a few years. We got lucky and it was actually calm the whole way out the New Dungness Lighthouse (it is an active Coast Guard lighthouse/but is run by a preservation group). Being only the 2cnd group out yesterday, we got the Deluxe tour..not the usual Touron-run-you -thru-tour. They even let Ford up into the top where the light is (usually it is 11 and up.) We had lunch on the green lawns there, watching the clouds filter across the Olympic Mts. There is almost no snow left in the Mts...like everywhere in WA state..sigh! The lighthouse keeper that gave us the tour was an old backpacker, and we eneded up chatting for quite some time with him-he was very intrested in our gear and where we hiked ;-) It finally rained on us coming back but it didn't last long-and we got a really cool double rainbow. Just one of those quiet peaceful days on the open water.
