79 and is now worm food!
"Mr. Carson passed away peacefully early Sunday morning," his nephew, Jeff Sotzing, told The Associated Press. "He was surrounded by his family, whose loss will be immeasurable. There will be no memorial service."

RIP!

Some quotes from Johnny Carson on his final show, May 22, 1992:

``I am taking the applause sign home, putting it in the bedroom.''

(On his sons in the audience and the death of another son, Rick, in a car crash): ``It would have been a perfect evening if their brother Rick had been here with us. But I guess life does what it's supposed to do and you accept it and go on.''

(On then-Vice President Dan Quayle, whose remarks on single mothers and the TV show ``Murphy Brown'' were making headlines): ``I really want to thank him for making my final week so fruitful.''

``And so it has come to this. I am one of the lucky people in the world. I found something that I always wanted to do and I have enjoyed every single minute of it.''

``You people watching, I can only tell you that it's been an honor and a privilege coming into your homes all these years to entertain you. And I hope when I find something I want to do and think you would like, I can come back and (you will be) as gracious in inviting me into your homes as you have been.''

"I bid you a very heartfelt good night.''

I know I was reading that as well. When I read that, I thought about Johnny and how I missed his show and his skits. His skits were the funniest. He will be missed, he already has been missed since he retired.

Wow.

Think of all the celebrities that die "surrounded" by family and friends. Especially the ones released by a Hospital the day before.

I also heard he gave jokes to Letterman. I also heard he wanted Letterman to take his job and not Leno.

I noticed that he retired in 1992, and that his son died in a car accident in 1991, so maybe that is what made him want to retire. It must be pretty damn hard for him to get up there and tell jokes and look happy after he lost his son.

After Dean Martin's son died, he went off the deep end. His son was in the service and his plane went down in the U.S.

A true legend, indeed. He truly made television great in his era.

RIP Karnak, Art Fern and all the other great characters his skits would feature...

I loved that skit he did where he was a sales man and he would give directions and the map he was pointing to was just a bunch of squiggly lines. His skits were the best. He was a true genius.

I heard that he wasn't really ill until about a week ago.

Also, when Letterman used Carson's jokes, Letterman followed-up with a golf swing.

Johnny Carson was great. Really enjoyed his "Best Of" shows.

lipstick - Dean Martin's son crashed in the San Gorgonio Wilderness where I patrol. One of several famous crashes there (Frank Sinatra's Mother also died in a crash there, to name another).

Phil, I just saw a documentary on Dean Martin, and they didn't mention exactly which area he went down in. They did think he went down in fog. They looked like low mountains, so I kind of wondered why he crashed.

I saw some guy do a commentary on how "good" Jay Leno was to do a tribute to Johnny after he died. Well, isn't Jay employed at the show? It's not his show, so how do you know if he said, "hey, let's devote the whole show to Johnny", or if that is what the producers wanted. The person said how good it was of Leno to do this tribute since Johnny liked Letterman over him.

I like Jay, but I don't know that I want to praise him for his show about Johnny's career.

lipstick - A heck of a lot of comedians owe their starts to Johnny Carson and they know it. My guess is that Jay Leno has a lot of creative control over his show and the tribute was genuine.

Johnny realy liked stand up comedy. It was fun to watch him enjoy the comedians.

Phil, I guess it's my cynical New Yorker roots talking. I think everyone expected a tribute to Johnny on a show he made famous and popular, even though they said Jay doubled or tripled the viewing audience. I wonder if that had anything to do with a lot of people not owning tvs when Johnny first started?

I loved watching Johnny Carson. He was priceless. I don't know if it had to do with his homespun background, and maybe, I'm not sure, his wanting to be a comedian and not a star that gave him such a wonderful quality. Some of the actors and actresses today seem to be so full of themselves. Maybe it's just the nature of the beast, but it's very unattractive.
