I don't know, the last couple backpacking trips I have been on, I have had some trouble. I think it's the snow, hiking in the snow seems to wear you down faster. I am looking forward to returning to Old Rag though. Wait till you guys see this place. The summit is far different than anything you normally see in Virginia.

No you won't; you're not capable of not driving down Friday night. I'll be expecting you to show up Roam-Around-style at around 2:30 AM or so...

All,

Fun read. Your all crazy.

Anyway...Ive been on Old Rag bazillion times, so to answer a couple o' questions i saw..(that i think went unanswered...)

No fires.

My vehicle has always been fine at trail heads there. In the 50-60 times ive parked overnight up there, not one problem...

Also..(if the link works) here are some pics from a trip i took up Old Rag and thru whiteoak in October of '03.

I found an old book I have on the Shenandoah National Park. The copyright date is 1959 and it is the 5th edition. Very cool book. I will read and see what it says about the Old Rag Trail tonight

I've been doing a little research on Old Rag myself. Looks very cool! We may need to hit the trail head very early, as it could get crowded quickly.

Glad you created the "specific planning" thread, Earth - I'd take me until sometime after this trip is over to read through everything posted.

I can't wait...

Gem, does that mean you are packing your bear cannister also.

I thought about doing the same thing. taking my Trek pack and load it up including the bear cannister.
Ewker

THAT I am not sure yet. Was thinking about it, just to get the feel of the weight etc... (minus the food for 7 days)

But my lazy twin keeps saying that I should'nt carry more weight then I have to...so I am still debating.
Gemini

go ahead and carry it. no since waiting till you get to the Sierras to realize how friggin heavy it is
Ewker

bear cannisters in SNP would not be a bad idea. The bears are becoming increasingly food agressive there. Although on this trip, less is more and a bear cannister on Old Rag could make it a tough fit through some of the crevasses.

Can I go?
Ewker has mentioned this trip to me, and even though I am from "the other side" (Backpacker.com - I go by Woodswoman over there) I'd love to join up if I can. Ewker can vouch for me that I am not a troll. I have been called a Dirtbag, though.

I recently moved to the Maryville, TN area and am trying to hook up with some folks to hike/backpack with.
