Bobo got 44, Pennsy got 36 and I got 18. last edited: 9/18/06 7:03:22 PM” 7:01:10 PM 9/18/06 “Pennsy and I got there early afternoon on Friday and set up camp at South Meadows. It was a little late to strike out and attempt Whiteface and Esther, so we looked over at Cascade and the top of the mountain was cloud free. It was one of the few peaks to be cloud free. So we hit the trailhead and at the register saw that the famous PinPin was there, as well as Jr. We signed ourselves in and headed up the trail. As we neared the trail jct between Porter and Cascade, we could see that the cloud ceiling had fallen and both mountains were now in the clouds. We hit up Porter first and then Cascade. While on Cascade, the clouds drifted apart for a few minutes to reveal a small view between Pitchoff and Whiteface. It didn't last long, the curtain closed and we climbed down the mountain expecting to meet bobo at the campsite. As we neared the trailhead, we saw a color object moving up the trail towards us. Pennsy then yelled, "No way!!" and it was bobo, he handed us both trail beers and we toasted the weekend. We then went back to the campsite, Bobo set up his camp and we went into Lake Placid for dinner at an italian eatery, I forget the name. After dinner, we had a few beers and the convo was good and called it a night. It was pretty cool. I wasn't ready for the cool temps yet. Saturday morning we slept in to around 730-8. Bobo made some awesome breakfast and then we headed over to the Adk Loj. From the Loj we hiked out the trail around Heart Lake and over to Mt. Jo, there we picked up the herd path towards Street and Nye. The Street and Nye herdpath was in great shape, better than some regular ADK trails I have hiked. I even saw plenty signs of trail maintenance. They might as well blaze the thing. No worries though, it made for fast and easy going. We made the summit of Nye in good time. No views up top, we hung around long enough to take pictures with the summit sign. Back in the col, we had lunch. Bobo made some amazing sandwhiches which really hit the spot. Bobo and Pennsy already had Street, but I needed it, and it was closeby. We hiked on up to the top and bagged the summit. We took some more summit pictures and then followed the side trail to a rock outcropping that afforded amazing views of the Macyntire Range and some of the peaks of the Great Range. we hung out there for a while until we realized we were being attacked the tiny evil cousins of the black flies. So we then descended Street and headed back to the Loj laughing joking and sometimes singing all the way. Even Pennsy sang a few bars of this and that. At the Loj, we all got a cold beverage, which after a long ten mile hike, sure tastes yummy. Saturday night bobo cooked up the finest dinner I ever did taste in camp and more laughing, singing, joking and story telling ensued, accompanied by sips of TNT, also made by bobo. Again it was chilly Saturday night. For some reason, I am always cold. Even now I am cold. brrrrr Sunday Pennsy got us up early by acting like a rooster. We packed up, had quick breakfasts and drove to the Ausable Club trailhead parking lot and hiked the road to the trail register and gate. There we met the evil troll. He asked us three questions, and said we had to answer the questions three. He first asked, "what is your favorite color?" Followed by, "What is your quest?" and finally, " What is the air speed velocity of a coconut laden sparrow?" Naturally, we all answerred the questions incorrectly, but "so far" that day things were going "good" and he spared us from the gorge of eternal peril. So we continued down the ausable lakes road towards the trail to Dial. We chatted with a lovely lady and enthusiastic hiker who was headed out to hike some other peaks on her own. She had just completed the 46, so it was nice to hear her stories. We found our trail and took a left as she continued straight. Heading up to Dial involved immediate and steep up. the up lasted a long time until we came out into a rocky clearing. There we could see the Great Range, Bear Den Mountain and Dial before. The Dix Range was also peaking out behind us. From there we could see that we had to hike into a rather deep col and then climb up Bearden, then down into another col and finally up to the top of Dial. Bearden was uneventful. We discovered though that there is also a such thing as false cols. ruhrow. We had figured on not having any views on Dial, but another hiker told us that Dial had a great rock outcrop that afforded a great view. Conveniently, it was also nearing lunch time. We would have lunch with a view. Splendid! It was along arduous climb to Dial from the col, nearly 1000 feet.” 8:28:17 PM 9/18/06 “at the top, we had lunch and took in the amazing view. I will spare you the thousand words! The view was incredible! Bobo said he would headback to the trailhead and Pennsy and I were to continue on to Nippletop. In case we didn't cross paths again, we said good byes. Pennsy and I dropped down into the col between Dial and Nippletop and quickly started the climb. Several false summits were crossed and the trail became increasingly mucky and wet with the elevation. Finally at the top of Nippletop, the view was one of the best I have ever seen. I was amazed. Again, thousand words will be spared.. pics to be posted. Pennsy and I hung out up top for 10 - 15 minutes or so and then descended into Elk Pass. The trail down was steep, wet and slick, but we made it fast and fall free. When we got back on Ausable Lake Road, we started to run. We had three miles to go and we wanted to catch bobo before he headed south. I think we got back to the trailhead in less than 45 minutes. We ran atleast two miles of it. At the trailregister (minus the troll) we saw that Bobo was through there just 10 minutes earlier. We got back to the cars, met up with Bobo and then headed over to the Noonmark for a post trip meal. After dinner it was late, it was after 530 and we all had a long drive back to Pennsylvania. thanks Pennsy for the drive.. thanks to bobo for the great meals! I had an awesome time. It was one of those trips that you don't want to end. I could have stayed on top of Nippletop for a long time. It was just incredible. I have some good pics.. I will post them soon!” 8:40:37 PM 9/18/06 “Hey dude................candy gram for EarthNsky. e-mail” 11:40:49 AM 9/20/06 “hey Mark, I gots the email. I haven't had a chance to look it over yet. He looks at me and says "Who is this??" Of course, I told him - the guy next to me looked at Alex, looked at me, I shrugged and Alex got a little embarassed and said "Hey, I'm 15 and am just figuring out what good music is." He was clearly a little embarrassed.” 1:35:09 PM 6/08/07 “I think you should pick him up a copy of the White Album stat. I bet he will love it.” 1:36:36 PM 6/08/07
