It is a long drive for a weekend 8+ hours and around 550 miles one way. It's a thought, but we'll see. I may opt for something closer, or I may stay inside for another weekend, because I'm just now starting to feel better again. last edited: 1/24/05 9:24:04 PM” 9:21:20 PM 1/24/05 “wuss!!” 9:53:32 PM 1/24/05 “me or him Gem ;op” 9:59:11 PM 1/24/05 “so...what happend to yam now? YAAAAMMMMMMM???? Where are YOUUUUUUUUU????? Okay, I am gone for tonight! ZAPPP!!! GONE!!” 10:20:59 PM 1/24/05 “gem, i am here. just got back from the corner pub.” 11:46:23 PM 1/24/05 “There is still snow on the north slopes, however we are going to the low 50's today and I wouldn't expect it to be there by the weekend below 3000 feet. The hike at the end of Cades Cove is Abrams falls. Laurel Falls is off Little Road between Cades Cove and Gatlinburg. If you go to Laurel falls, the best views are to go past the falls (path to the falls is paved because of so much foot traffic). Past the falls the crowd thins quick as the trail climbs up through virgin forest to the old firetower. Crowds were thin this past weekend because of the snow and cold temps. If it is sunny and 50, expect a lot of dayhikers. The Back Porch in Townsend is open W-Sunday now and if you want a table on the weekend, you probably should make a reservation.” 7:21:36 AM 1/25/05 “Chili thanks! so it's doable right?? See yam...you old drunk!!” 7:32:06 AM 1/25/05 “I haven't been up above 3000 feet this week, but they only got around 3 inches up there. The sky has been cloudless the past two days, temps in Townsend hit a high of about 40 yesterday and going to 50's today. The north slopes still have snow but I wouldn't imagine there would be any problem by the weekend. 441 across Newfound Gap was supposed to be open yesterday.” 7:36:36 AM 1/25/05 “gemini, you have mail” 7:39:47 AM 1/25/05 “thanks...chili...checking it now.” 7:43:55 AM 1/25/05 “So Gem, am I gonna need crampons for this?” 10:16:40 AM 1/25/05 “BTW, I have done this hike before and it is very cool.” 10:20:29 AM 1/25/05 “embear, gemini is thinking no on the crampons, but i'm still checking at CT if they rent (do you think BRMS rents?). is this that route we did a year or two ago? it looks so familiar to me.” 10:34:48 AM 1/25/05 “I dont think BRMS rents, but I can call Frankie-poo. :) We did not do this route before. I havent done this since I was like 13 years old.” 10:48:45 AM 1/25/05 “If memory serves me well, it is a hell of a pull going up from Cosby.” 10:51:40 AM 1/25/05 “THats what I was thinking chili!” 11:08:12 AM 1/25/05 “Yam, I called and BRMS does not rent or sell them. I guess there is no need around here for them. :(” 11:18:57 AM 1/25/05 “it is a nice climb from Big Creek Campsite. I did a dayhike last yr to Mt Cammerer in July. I looked like a drowned rat. It was so friggin hot” 11:19:45 AM 1/25/05 “hey em, when i was talking to bill he told me the story about the 'frank set-up' he had in mind. LOL!” 11:39:01 AM 1/25/05 “sooo....what's up girls??? okay...i just got your email! last edited: 1/25/05 12:39:46 PM” 12:35:38 PM 1/25/05 “whassup wid you?” 12:39:46 PM 1/25/05 “soooooooooo???? where are we????? I share one of my crampons if needed, and I can bring the yacks that pennsy gave to me. if everything fails, we could always check for crampons in gatlinburg.” 4:15:24 PM 1/25/05 “Gem, Yam and I talked about getting some yaks before we go. When are we meeting up? I am clueless to any sort of plans for this. Is it even still in the works? Yam? Gem?” 10:24:35 AM 1/26/05 “I don't think you will need crampons. It was 52 degrees at 2000 feet at 10 this morning. I dont' see a speck of snow in the lower elevations, I will be going across 321 through Cosby today and will check the conditions on the way through.” 10:29:16 AM 1/26/05 “Yup. I just saw on weather.com that it is supposed to rain the whole weekend in cosby. Do you think that would be snow up in the mountains chili?” 10:33:35 AM 1/26/05 “I haven't seen the forecast since yesterday, but given that, no, I wouldn't expect snow up there.” 10:40:03 AM 1/26/05 “ri Jan 28 Partly Cloudy 40°/23° 20% Sat Jan 29 Rain / Snow Showers 38°/30° 60% 2 Very Poor Sun Jan 30 Showers 48°/38° 40% This is for Cosby. Given this information, I change my opinion. It will snow in the upper elevations.” 10:43:06 AM 1/26/05 “Yay!” 10:46:04 AM 1/26/05 “When are we meeting up? I am clueless to any sort of plans for this. Yam? Gem?” embear 10:24:35 AM 1/26/05 hey embear. since when have i known my plans 3 days in advance?? ; ) we could meet friday night? that sound ok? last edited: 1/26/05 10:48:30 AM” 10:46:41 AM 1/26/05 “Sounds good Yam. We gonna car camp somewhere Fri night? I dont know whats gotten into me .... I feel the need to know what I am doing for the weekend before the weekend now!?! :)” 10:50:18 AM 1/26/05 “You can go for dinner at the Front Porch in Cosby. It is the only place I know that advertises Mexican and American food.” 11:01:39 AM 1/26/05 “I love the Cosby campground in the ntl park. It seems so much less crowded and more secluded than any of the others. Maybe we could drive their Fri night?” 11:10:06 AM 1/26/05 embear “i'd emailed you sometime this morning. did you not get it? mmmmmmm Mexican!! (good idea chili) last edited: 1/26/05 11:20:02 AM” 11:19:15 AM 1/26/05 “Just got it. You got one now.” 11:26:12 AM 1/26/05 “leave your damn phones on this time okay? (Yam and em) I'll be up there Friday night myself, not sure how the connection is in Gatlinburg, but I'll give you a call and you give me a ring okay? I would say we all meet friday night somehwere in gatlinburg. or at the visitor center. whatcha think?” 12:08:48 PM 1/26/05 “Gemini you have mail.” 12:51:41 PM 1/26/05 “cottonsocks: yes mam'n. I'll run and check real quick. got it, send you an email back. so em....wanna meet then in cosby at the campground? we can do that too. dunn really care! that would be an extra bag night. what time you are guys getting there anyway? gonna be late right? like after 12AM?? last edited: 1/26/05 12:57:20 PM” 12:53:07 PM 1/26/05 “I dont care what we do. It might be nice to have 1 warm night, especially since we will be coming in so late. I think we will prolly be there around 11 or 12. I should get service in Gatlinburg.” 1:26:14 PM 1/26/05 “embear, Cosby campground is closed for the winter. Your short enough you could sleep in the backseat though ;)” 4:07:24 PM 1/26/05 “okay! I'll call. If you don't hear from me, you or yam try to call. if for some strange reason we can't get through via phone... let's say we meet around 12AM at the sugarland visitor center. sounds good?? i am not worried about where to sleep friday night.” 4:31:49 PM 1/26/05 CRAMPONS - GEM, YAM, EM “You guys were asking about crampons earlier...... There is a store in Gatlinburg(first light by the park entrance) called HappyHiker(www.happyhiker.com) that has instep crampons for $10 bucks. I bought some MLK weekend before going to LeConte and they came in handy. Oh yeah... be warned ITS COLD We had 0+ mountain hardwear bags and the low was about 25, so we figured that it wouldnt get any lower than 5 or 10 degrees up on LeConte...WRONG. It got -10 degrees with a ridiculous windchill and the tip of my left toe froze solid in the night... (still waiting to regain total feeling..will take about a month) With that said.... I should be posting the winter wonderland pics tonight!” 4:48:34 PM 1/26/05 “thanks for the info, deltahiker. : )” 5:21:30 PM 1/26/05 “No prob yam... here are those pics from freezing our asses off 2 weeks ago.. if you want em.. they are at this thread.. http://thebackpacker.com/trailtalk/thread/36166,3.php” 10:00:38 PM 1/26/05 “Ok Gem, sounds good. Now I am thinking that I do not have a warm-enough sleeping bag for this. What are yall bringing? The lowest I have is +15.” 10:08:34 PM 1/26/05 “same here embear, 10 degrees, I have a liner and a second bag though. It'll work out somehow. lets drive up there, and see how it goes. what u think? thanks Deltahiker! I know where that store is located.” 10:30:09 PM 1/26/05 “i'm going to try my new -5* out. i'd been debating bringing a second one, too, cuz you just never know. nice pics, D! last edited: 1/26/05 10:46:55 PM” 10:42:23 PM 1/26/05 “The more I think about it, the more I realize that I am gonna freeze my arse off with only a 15 degree bag. I think I may have to bail..............:(” 11:04:00 PM 1/26/05 “whhhhaaaaa!!!!!I wish I could give you another bag, but I have only those 2, and I prolly need both of them. Does yam have a second bag?? It would be great if you could go! okay...done for today. working late. this is it though. night! last edited: 1/26/05 11:43:09 PM” 11:40:14 PM 1/26/05 “you two losers have mail.” 8:03:34 AM 1/27/05 “It was 38 in Dry Valley when I got up this morning. However when I went out, the upper 1/3 of Rich Mountain was covered in a heavy frost. It will be cold on Mt Cammer.” 9:23:00 AM 1/27/05
