looks like im outa commision for quite awhile this time!! sat i was heading out for a dayhike in the first decent snow of 2005 and before an inch fell i hit a patch of hidden ice and destroyed my right shoulder!!broke the socket into 4 peices ,the ball at the top of the arm bone is broke longways and the cartilage is totally detached!!the doc didnt seem to agree but i think the shoulder strap is what caused so much damage! there is a long bruise down my arm shaped just like the strap!38 years and never had anything worse than a hairline fracture!!! man this sucks!! they are gonna hold off on operating and see how it heals cause once they open me up theres a risk of infection and its prolly not worth the risk.

has anybody here had this kind of injury before?? any suggestions on thingsi can do to get back out there hiking would be great!!!thanks alot and I hope your 2005 is going better than mine!!lol streamweaver

Ouch streamweaver! Hope it heals up okay, it sounds really serious. I guess your big-league pitching career is over though.

SW, you'll be heading into surgery for this one. A friend of my brother had 3 surgeries to correct his, and it's still not the same.

sounds like you are going to the injured reserve thread RSN and going to be on the bench for a good long while. Looking on the bright side : at least it wasn't your leg that was this fcked up - adjust your pack so almost all the weight is on your hips and you will be able to backpack again as soon as you get healed up.

Sorry to hear about your injury and I hope all goes well for a speedy recovery.
I had a third degree shoulder separation in a mountain bike crash so I know how painful shoulder injuries can be. Ice is pretty dangerous stuff and when you do fall it's usually a hard fall.

NJpacker had a torn rotator cuff. Not exactly sure what that means, but he did get it operated on.

Come to think of it, I haven't seen him post in a while. I wonder what he's been up to?

But anyway, that's neither here nor there; I digress. Sorry to hear about your shoulder. Hope you feel better soon.

Ouwwwweeeee!

Yep, my year's going better than that :-D
Take care of yourself. As anxious as I'm sure you are, it's better to heal completely than rush it and have a problem for life.

Ouch! I had shoulder surgery a few years back for a torn rotator cuff. After trying physical therapy and drugs to reduce swelling and inflamation, they decided surgery would be best. Doc fixed the torn rotator cuff, took out damaged cartiladge, and placed plastic pins that would eventually disolve. Recovery was slow and painful. I also ended up with another surgery for an infected elbow 3 weeks after the shoulder surgery. Are there risks? ...sure there are. I was back to 100% about 9-12 months after the surgery.

Good luck, streamweaver!

Ouch streamweaver! Hope it heals up okay, it sounds really serious. I guess your big-league pitching career is over though.” yup bit ,i guess so but to be honest ,a career as a big time pitcher wasnt really what it was all cracked up to be!! i mean sure theres big money, hot women, fast cars ,travel all over the place ,people treating you like royalty ,but hey-get rid of all that and whats left??!! know what i mean!!!??

wanna hear something kinda funny? i saw on the news that a trucker swerved to avoid hitting somebody and went over the side of a bridge on 95 in howard co yesterday.he landed by the river 70 feet below!!the funny thing is that that was one of the spots i was heading to saturday when i had my mishap.and 2 this trucker fell 70 feet in a rig and has injuries less severe than mine!!!lol sheesh!! think ill avoid that spot for awhile!!!

I saw that, too. Guy was darn lucky - most of the truck was in the water and the cab was only a few feet out of it. A few feet lower on the bank and he wouldn't have had a chance.

Glad you weren't down there, but sorry to hear the reason why.
