The reality is that Bush has not been strong enough on the terrorists in Iraq. They are still running roughshod over everything.

He badly underestimated the troops needed for this war. And he has consistently budgeted insufficient funds for the war.

Bush is weak. He should put more money and more troops into Iraq.

Saddam Hussein and the terrorists in Iraq were and are a major threat. This situation demands a President who will go all the way in protecting America from terrorism.

LOL! I thought it was a complete joke! However:

Energy giant Chevron Corp. has quietly renamed one of its big oil tankers.

The Condoleeza Rice, named after the former Chevron director and current National Security Adviser to President Bush, was renamed the Altair Voyager, the San Francisco Chronicle reported in May.

In April, at a White House press briefing, assistant press secretary Scott McLellan was asked about the oil tanker.
The reporter put it this way: “Before she became National Security Advisor, [Rice] was on the board of directors of Chevron Corporation. Chevron –– before she left –– named an oil tanker after her. There’s an oil tanker named the Condoleeza Rice. It’s a 136,000 ton oil tanker that carries oil around the world. Given that Chevron has been accused of human rights abuses with the Nigerian Mobile Police against civilians in Nigeria, I’m wondering whether the president thinks it’s wise to have this close a relationship with Chevron.”

McLellan said that he thought “the issue has already been addressed by Dr. Rice and she will uphold the highest ethical standards in office.”

When asked whether the president should call the CEO of Chevron and say, “Take the name off the tanker,” McLellan said, “I think the issue has been addressed.”
“We made the change to eliminate unnecessary attention caused by the vessel’s original name,” says Chevron spokesperson Fred Gorell.

Asked whether the White House had asked for the name change, Gorell told the San Francisco Chronicle “that’s not for me to discuss.”

In April, when the controversy was brewing, a spokesperson for Chevron said that the company would not rename the Condi Rice tanker. “If you remember, Carla Hills was on our board, and went off the board to take a role in the administration, and we did not rename the tanker,” the spokesperson said at the time.

"Defend" is the incorrect word, bbw. We need to be more offensive. Rather than sitting behind blocks of concrete, we need to be on every streetcorner. We'll build better relationships with local Iraqis and we can go after the terrorists whereever they are.

This will, of course, result in more casualties. But Iraq's welfare and America's core safety are inextricably linked.

Let's talk less about defense and more about offense.

Nigal, the civil war was actually fought for political reasons concerning the souths succession from the Union. The year the war started, 1861, Congress actually passed a constitutional amendment for ratification that would have protected the right to own slaves. If the only agenda of the Confederacy was to protect slavery it could have just stayed in the union. At the time there were still 15 slave owning states so even with 50 states in the union an amendment could not have been ratified that did revoke the right to slavery. Politics have muddied history and tried to paint a picture that is not accurate.

Trivia: Lincoln, the president that illegaly used his authority to start a war with the newly formed nation of the Condederacy, was a member of what newly formed political party?

A: Republican! No wonder we can't get an honest account of history during his presidency!

I think Lincoln was a great American President, probably the greatest, but some of the ways he used his power during the Civil War makes the current Bush look like an alter boy. That being said, Lincoln accomplished great things and saved the union. I can't think of a single great accomplishment during Bush's tenure as President. Bush is a divider.

Less than two months before 9/11/01, the state-controlled Iraqi newspaper “Al-Nasiriya” carried a column headlined, “American, an Obsession called Osama Bin Ladin.” (July 21, 2001)

In the piece, Baath Party writer Naeem Abd Muhalhal predicted that bin Laden would attack the US “with the seriousness of the Bedouin of the desert about the way he will try to bomb the Pentagon after he destroys the White House.”

The same state-approved column also insisted that bin Laden “will strike America on the arm that is already hurting,” and that the US “will curse the memory of Frank Sinatra every time he hears his songs” – an apparent reference to the Sinatra classic, “New York, New York”.

You must have picked a poor sample, pedxing. Or you must have a prejudice against Free Republic (and I would understand this). For instance, this shows a link between AQ and Saddam:

Bin Laden met Iraqi agent

WASHINGTON -- (AP) -- A 1998 meeting between Osama bin Laden and a senior Iraqi intelligence officer in Afghanistan is coming under renewed scrutiny as U.S. officials search for clues of a state sponsor of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Farouk Hijazi, an Iraqi intelligence officer who is Iraq's ambassador to Turkey, met with bin Laden in Kandahar, a region in southeastern Afghanistan where bin Laden is known to have training camps, a U.S. official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity. It is not known what was discussed at the December 1998 meeting.

That's just one of many such articles from the mainstream press in those links.

The United Nations said yesterday that the US must reduce its fiscal deficit rather than rely on a depreciation of the dollar if "an abrupt and globally damaging correction" to the world economy was to be avoided.

In its annual report on the world economy, the UN said American citizens must also be encouraged to save more and steps must be taken to increase domestic demand in the US's largest trade partners.

The weakening dollar will devalue the huge US dollar-based assets held by Chinese and Japanese central banks, says the report. This could lead to softening global demand, which would curb appetite for US exports and thereby undo some effects of a weaker dollar.

Jose Antonio Ocampo, UN under-secretary general for economic and social affairs, said: "The possibility of an abrupt and globally damaging correction persists since a depreciation of the dollar alone seems unlikely to be sufficient to reduce the global imbalances to sustainable levels in an orderly fashion."

To help replace the demand for global goods that the US provides, countries that have large trade surpluses with the US - especially Japan and the eurozone - should stimulate domestic demand, preferably by investment, the report says.

Well, that has a shade more substance than the BS I saw, but barely: an anonymous person in the US government claims that the Iraqi Ambassador to Turkey met with Bin Lden in 1998? And the Ambassador was involved in Iraqi intelligence? Most ambassadors are invlved in their nations intelligence.

Heck we funneled money to Bin-Laden years ago, so the nut jobs who claim the US was behind Bin-Laden have more evidence.

If this is one of the highlights of what can be gleaned from the links, then they are incredibly weak. Again the 9/11 commission found no credible evidence of collaboration between Iraq and Al-Qeda.

The 9/11 commission stated there was communication between Al Queda and Iraq but there was no "collaborative operation relationship". Great, they called each other on the weekends to talk about moms brownies and we used that justify a war. Please, the links are nothing more then conversation with no action stemming from that communication. Al Queda operated on its own and GW made a mistake. A big one. Bigger than his hat.

Ran his own oil company into the ground?

Talk about a mass distortion. Bush made money for his investors during a bust cycle in the industry when a lot of other good businessmen lost a lot of money. I'd hardly call that flying his proverbial plan into a mountain. I'd call it landing nicely.

And lets not forget that the improvements he made for the Rangers were nothing short of spectacular, not the results of a poor businessman.

Euchre strategy and the war in Iraq.

I don't think that the world is a black and white place. I tend to think that there are a range of options with varying gradations of potential for good.

I have always and continue to feel that the war in Iraq was an utterly stupid thing to do - strategically. Just think of all the places we could have put these troops and this money.

However, there is one aspect of the Bush strategy that I do like.

When you play euchre, it is almost invariably better to push the play. Calling the suit takes control of the situation. You might have a really bad hand one out of five times, but if you name it those five times, no one else gets a chance. You tend to win.

I do think that there is something to be said for this in the Middle East. Regardless of Saddam's guilt or innocence, we have pushed the play. The bad guys have to react.

However, this means being aggressive at all times. You don't name a hand on three lower diamonds and an offsuit ace and then play timid when the cards are thrown down. You have to risk it all.

I think that this is what Bush has done. He decided to call the suit and go to war. Yet he seems wholly incapable of taking the high casualty rates and aggressive action that could actually make this strategy successful.

Back to the range of options.

#1 Best Option: Don't go to war. Spend money on Afghanistan, social security, small business loans, national debt.

#2 Option: Go to war and go full throttle. Spend all the money you can print. Sacrifice whatever troops necessary. Damn the political consequences. If it really is important, then act like it.

#3 Worst Option: Go to war, then pull back behind the damned barricades. Move cautiously. Refuse to acknowledge the true cost of the war and run like a frightened puppy back to Congress every three months. Have your generals running around talking about a "broken force" because you don't have the balls to raise troop pay or reinstitute the draft. Let the Saudis run around like the damned fools that they are because you are scared to upset them.

Guess which one our guy picked?
