Anybody "do it yourself?"

Lately I've become a bit disillusioned with store-bought products, ok, for hair. So I decided to look on the net and find some NATURAL remedies.

I am sitting here with mayo (REAL MAYO!) on my hair right now. Will let you know how it turns out. :-) CUT IT OUT ALREADY WITH THE SALAD JOKES! lol

LOL!

I never tried that one, but I have used olive oil for moisturizer, and sometimes make my own baking soda/corn starch powder. I make bath salts as well, an exfoliating body scrub, and have made hand cream.

So what's this mayonaise supposed to do for ya?

once i put raw egg in my hair, for some reason. it was soooo gross, it smelled like rotten eggs for like a week, no matter how much i washed it. LOL! sexxxy. what exactly are you trying to remedy? i use Nature's Gate herbal shampoo, it totally kicks ass...even though it's store-bought.

Mayo will work to moisturize, since its about 70% oil. Freeze and then thaw a jar of mayo once and you'll see for yourself (I did it accidentally once). You could skip the mayo and just use straight oil, same effect.

olive oil is good for that...also, mix olive oil with salt then scrub the scalp to help get rid of dandruff.

I've infused olive oil with lots of lavender and rosemary and used that as a scalp and hair treatment. Burt's Bees has good stuff, too. I love thier citrus facial scrub, and their peppermint shampoo and body wash bars.

Goody, I love it when the guys show up. LOL!

I could tell it was oily when I put the mayo in the hair. My hair was dry, so I spritzed it some with water. I put it in a shower cap.

Common sense was telling me, "Heat the shower cap!" but then I read on some website that cooked mayo is NASTY. LOL!

I have used some Nexxus stuff called Botanic Oil. You put a few drops in pre-wash, if you like, or mix with conditioner, or use for moisturizer. The past couple days I put on pre-shampoo and also mixed with Redken's "Soft" heavy cream conditioner (yes, I am a haircare products ho!!! LOL) That seemed to work very well the first day and not so well yesterday. hmmm...

Anyway, would love to cut the amount of moola spent on haircare products. I've looked on some websites for natural dyes, too. My hair is in such rotten shape, the ends, all frizzy and faded. But I hate to cut it!!!

A great skin and scalp conditioner I stumbled on: there's a plant called "Pinecone Ginger," that has these red fruiting bodies that are loaded with this vaguely slimey but incredibly fragrant liquid. It's great for skin lotion and on the hair. Up north (that's north of here) it'd grow as an indoor plant. It's very pretty and easy to grow.

I used the same coconut oil I cooked with on my skin in India..on the trail I've used canola oil..oil is oil and I have dry skin..I've used an olive oil/egg yolk mixture on my very dry hair in the past..good mixture..lemon juice or vinegar and water is a good rinse for those with oily hair...I'm not a real big soap user..it dries out the skin and, unless you've been playing in the dirt or have oily skin, not necessary...I know lots of good, natural household products you can use both to clen you and your house...I'm a big believer in vinegar, baking soda and salad oil..

the best conditioner i've ever used in my whooooole life is Aussie 3-Minute Miracle. it's supposed to be a weekly treatment, but i use it every day as my regular conditioner. okay, i know that's not a "home remedy," but WHATNEVER!

I have a whole book on "make em yourself" beauty products. I'll have to look it up and send. Lizs, you have dark hair like me, here are some things I remember:

Molasses - a mess! but my hair was sooo soft afterwards

Cider vinegar - dilute with water, brings out red highlights

Of course beer, I figure darker beer for darker hair. THIS DOESN'T WORK! Probably because more hair ends up in my mouth than on my hair????

I've had problems using Dr. Bronners' soaps. They leave my hair in one big knot if I use more than 2 drops, even when my hair is really skanky.

treebait - that's probably because it's pure soap. I know my hair is like straw after washing it with DrB - it seems to strip everything off it.

HPM can use it just fine with his hair; nice, thick and curly.

Another good Burt's product is their avocado and shea butter hair treatment. That stuff is nice!

I grind up aspirin and use it on blemishes... :-) I've heard that some people use toothpaste for the same purpose...

have you tried to dye your hair with natural henna? I used the clear kind one and my hair was really nice and soft afterwards, and with just a nice sheen... check to make sure that it is compatible with whateever you've died your hair with in the past, though... I also seem to recall a woman using carrots to make a natural dye (it was on the 1940s house program on PBS.) in the absence of a commercial dye... I suppose that cherry juice might also work, but would give more of a purple-y caste to the hair...? Aren't walnut shells a natural dye for dark brown as well?

I've also heard of using avocado as a facial mask to soften the skin, and oatmeal, honey and a little sea salt as an exfoliating scrub as well, for oily skin.

Tomato juice is good for oily skin, too. A good scrub for oily skin is oatmeal blended with sea salt and a little tomato juice to make a paste. Scrub onto skin, leave on a few minutes, and rinse with cool water.

I've used cooking oil to wash oil based paint out of my hair and to clean up the hands. Its easier to wash the oil out of the hair than to shampoo "stiff" paint.

OK, finally, some results (oh yeah, I've got hip waders on, so I can clear my way through some of those recent comments. LOL)...

I had the mayo on sligtly wet hair spritzed with water, shower cap covering all, for maybe 45 minutes.

Looks good. Is soft. Styled with the same products I would have used otherwise. The results are defnitely on par with the much more MUY EXPENSIVO Nexxus Botanic Oil/Redken "All Soft" heavy cream conditioner.

AND I **DON'T** smell like a salad!! (Maybe cuz it's the local supermarket's brand of mayo??)

I did have to laugh. The mayo is in a squeeze bottle. It said to refrigerate and store upside down once opened. I put it in the fridge door, behind something to prop it up, and thought, man, sure as sh1t this will fall out when I open the door.

The next time I went to the fridge, POW, it sounded like a bullet as the damn bottle hit the floor and half the lid cracked off. LMAO!!! doh...

Lizs, my hair tends to be dry also, especially the ends. Heated olive oil makes a wonderful once-a-week "hot oil" treatment and works wonders for dry hair. Just heat the olive oil about as hot as you can stand to put on your skin, then put it on dry hair. Then put the shower cap on it and wrap it in a towel to keep it warm. About 20 minutes usually does the trick. It'll have to be shampooed out.

It works wonders on your nails and cuticles at the same time (DON'T wash it off!).

I think I did the egg thing before. Didn't smell for days, but it didn't do me any good either. I had cucumbers on my face before. LOL

Liz, the botanic oil from nexus is great. Not just for hair, but also for your skin. I love that stuff.

If you wanna save money I would find me a local costcutter (don't let them cut your hair though) and buy the big bottles of nexus for $25 (shampoo and conditioner set)

I bought the kerafix and hmm..not sure what shampoo just last week. can't beat that price.

Oh...and my hair is prolly more screwed up then yours. I use Nexus Emergenge once a week. That's good stuff too.
I am not too nuts bout the redken stuff.

Nexus is my favorite so far.

How about Almond oil with a splash of Oil of Spike (I think that's what Lavendar Oil is called)? I'll bet that would not only make your hair soft, but it would make it smell nice as well...

Eeeeeeewe! A girlfriend told me the mayo think works great so I tried. I thought it smelled wrotten and it was soooooo oily that I think I shampooed out anything that might have benefited my hair. I think I'll stick to the good smelling store stuff.

Go on Lizs, spend the bucks. You're worth it!

I'm guessing that the mayo solution works well on CURLY or COARSE hair... if you have fine, thin or straight hair, I think it might make the hair way too oily...

I've heard of the cider vinegar or beer rinsing before, but I'm wondering how much you can smell after you've finished washing your hair (with the beer)...
