this sucks
it's looking like we won't be able to camp in Ricketts Glen State Park. We need to come up with a plan B.

A.)The trip needs to be in PA.
B.)The trip needs to involve ice (vanilla ice or italian ice doesn't count).
C.) I can't think of a c.

Anyhow, here are some ideas I have.
Find someplace to car camp near Ricketts Glen. I don't know of any places. Camp at Worlds End State Park, this is about 40 minute drive from Ricketts Glen though. Do a section of the Laurel Highlands Trail, very nice trail and is supposed to be very proetty in the winter and it has nice shelters with fire places.

I hope we can find a way to still do the Ricketts Glen loop. Ricketts Glen is an amazing place and I really want everyone to see how awesome it is.

if you didn't know already, Ricketts Glen had a water main break below the campground. They don't know where it is and they don't expect to have it repaired in time for our trip. Thus, the campground is closed indefinitely.

I really want you to see Ricketts Glen Scorch. You will love it and it's pretty close to home. It's an incredible place with its waterfalls and old growth hemlock forests.

I'm pretty sure the CG at World's End has hot showers, even in the winter. That's always a good thing. You could do the Rickett's Glen hike, camp at World's End and then dayhike the Loyalsock. If I remember, there are 2 nice waterfalls nearby.

There are some nice waterfalls on the Double Run trail in Worlds End State Park. I'll call tomorrow to see if I can get the reservations switched over. What do you guys think?

I didn't even think of that! Ah...wood burning stove and bottle of something.

Worlds end would add another hour to the ride, but f*ck it, I'm there.

Very doable..
A rustic cabin for 8 people, 2 nights would be $127.98. Thats $8 per person, per night.

We were somewhere around Ricketts Glen, on the edge of the mountains, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like,

Melissa: "I feel a bit lightheaded. Maybe you should drive."

Suddenly, there was a terrible roar all around us, and the sky was full with what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, and a voice was screaming,

Melissa: "Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn animals?!"

George: "Did you say something?"

Melissa: "Hm? Nevermind. It's your turn to drive."

No point in mentioning these bats, I thought. Poor bastards will see them soon enough.

You can turn your back on a camper, but, never turn your back on a backpacker. Especially when it's waving a razor-sharp trekking pole in your eye.

We had two packs of gear, seventy-five pellets of trail mix, five sheets of high-powered toe warmers, a saltshaker half-full of firestarter, and a whole galaxy of crampons, snowshoes, wool socks, stoves... Also, a quart of tequilla, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw firewater, and two dozen advil. Not that we needed all that for the hike, but once you get into a serious gear collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can. The only thing that really worried me was the firewater. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an firewater binge, and I knew we'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon.

Rob: "[singing and looking at hitch hiker off the side of the mountain] Let's give that boy a lift."

Melissa: "What? No! We can't stop here! This is bat country!"
ScorchFire
7:28:32 AM

after we picked up the hitchhiker
Backslacker: "Hot damn! I never rode in a Jetta before!"

Melissa: "Is that right? Well... I guess you're about ready, then, aren't you?"

George: "We're your friends. We're not like the others, man, really."

Melissa: "No more of that talk or I'll put the f-cking leeches on you, understand?"

Rob: "Heh heh heh..."

Melissa: "Get in!"

[The hitchhiker gets in the Jetta and is met with a strange gaze from myself.]

George: "It's okay. She's just admiring the shape of your skull."

Perhaps, if I explained things, he'd rest easy.

looking back on the trip
Strange memories on this nervous weekend in Ricketts Glen. 2 days later? 3? It seems like a lifetime, or at least a main era---the kind of peak that never comes again. Pennsylvania in the low 2000s was a very special time and place to be a part of. Maybe it meant something. Maybe not, in the long run, but no explanation, no mix of words or music or memories can touch that sense of knowing that you were there and alive in that corner of time and the world. Whatever it meant.

There was madness in any direction, at any hour. If not across the trail, then up the incline or down the valley to the junction or turnoff. You could strike sparks anywhere.

There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning.

I scored a cabin at Ricketts Glen. It's $80 a night and for two nights it will be $160. It sleeps six, but I think we can get a couple more in there if need be. I need to know who wants in the cabin as early as possible. The cabin is a modern cabin and has electric heat and a kitchen. There are two rooms, one with 2 bunk beds and the other has one double bed. for those who want to stay in the cabin, we will split the cost of it up.

What the hell did I just read, I don't even remember dropping that acid! I thought I read something about a cabin at Ricketts Glen, but that can't be, it's closed. Then something about bats and hitchhikers, and I was there? I'm so confused, maybe I should just go and sleep it off?

there was a Fear and Loathing in Ls Vegas love fest.

The campground is closed, but the cabin area is ok. When I called a few weeks back all of the cabins were reserved, but someone cancelled so I was able to score one. the cabin is pretty nice.

what kind of details do you need?

so far in the cabin we have:
Scorchus amongus
Batman Luke
Backslacka'
Phantom Del Sol
ENS (the Dude, duderino, dudder, his dudeness)
Brodysaliva

Details:

I'm getting there early Friday. They said we can check into the cabin in the morning no problem. I'm going to hike some trails, not the Glens Trail though. If anyone is there they can hike with me. Let meknow when you're coming and I'll wait for you.
Saturday, we'll hike the Glens Trail and see the waterfalls in all their winter's glory (crampons and trekking poles are necessary for the Glens Trail. Sunday morning maybe a small dayhike, lunch in Bloomsburg and then we part ways. That's the plan I can think of.

we got a modern cabin. It has a stove, microwave, frig and freezer. We have to bring our own food, blankets (bedding), towels, cooking and eating stuff, you get the drift. It has a bathroom too.

Oh my God, move over Marriot! OK, I won't bring half my gear, but I'll still bring some stuff. The cabins I use at Jenny Jump are nothing more than a wooden tent with a wood burning stove, but I think I can manage. :~)

YES! That's was awesome, SF!

OMG, you don't even know how cool this is going to be. Slackers Inc., I tell you. I call dibbs on a bottom bunk. AKH might make it, but will most likely not be requiring sleeping arrangements.

So who else is in, now that we got more-than-luxury arrangements (this is soo anti-FYAO...)

Still working on those crampons...
