Yosemite in the autumn?” 6:56:02 AM 2/01/05 “I just bought a 2-video set in which they visit and describe each national park. It's pretty cool to watch and to get ideas for trips. And it's pretty amazing how varied they are. Did you know that there is substantial acreage underwater (coral reefs) that is designated NP? I usually picture a national park as being something like Yosemite or Joshua Tree and conjure up Ansel Adams images. But there are quite a few tropical NPs like American Samoa and Haleakala and Virgin Islands.” 8:03:31 AM 2/01/05 “"damn, how many people can say the first time they went backpacking was in Denali!” Roam Around 2:16:33 AM 1/29/05 Thinkbubelz and I have road-tripped and car-camped for years, but we started doing more camping trips around the country after we went to the Grand Canyon in 2001 (just before 9-11-- we flew back to Michigan on 09/09...) After going to the Grand Canyon, we realized our gear was much too bulky and heavy for traveling by plane, so we've been slowly lightening our gear ever since.... (The next time we flew was in 2003). On a whim last summer, we checked into an airfare to Anchorage from Chicago and it was only $349 for a direct, RT flight, so we decided we HAD to go.... We bought the backpacking packs (we only had smaller daypacks before) and the REI Halfdome 2, packed everything in 2 packs and a duffel bag and off we went (we spent a few days in Chicago, so we needed some "city clothing" in addition to our backpacking clothes). We nearly didn't do the backpacking, but decided that we had come so far to Denali that we might as well give it a try.... Luckily, we hooked up with some slightly more experienced backpackers and it was a great experience! If we were ever blessed with the same type of airfare, we'd go again in a heartbeat... It was a little bit rough in Denali as our 1st backpacking experience (our packs were very heavy from carrying too much extra water!) but definitely worth it. So many more miles-- next time, we will probably take the 13 hour bus to the Wonder Lake campgrounds...” 9:18:35 AM 2/01/05 “Death Valley” 10:42:06 AM 2/01/05 WOO HOO!!! BIG NEWS!!! “Senators say proposals are too commercial, have ‘wrong emphasis’ WASHINGTON - Republican senators joined Democrats in telling the National Park Service to back off proposed new guidelines that could allow Segway scooters and more cell phones, noise and air pollution in the national parks. Instead, members of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources’ national parks subcommittee urged Park Service officials to undertake more modest changes to their overall plan for managing a 388-park system. “It’s very controversial and it (the Park Service) put the wrong emphasis on it,” Sen. Craig Thomas, R-Wyo., the panel’s chairman, said after a two-hour hearing Tuesday. “I don’t think we’re satisfied yet.” snip “There’s no reason to do this when you’re going to diminish what’s in the parks,” said Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn. He said the document raises the odds of more cell phone towers, air pollution and noise in the national parks, and he urged the Park Service to lengthen its 90-day public comment period on it to 180 days. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9896092/” 11:50:57 AM 11/02/05 “good for Lamar, I will have to send him an email thanking him for this” 5:57:26 PM 11/02/05 “I'd like to see most roads closed too. Turn it back over to nature. It just sickens me to see mile long lines of cars going through someplace like Yellowstone.” 6:03:46 PM 11/02/05
