Do you hike at work?
My recent job position change has allowed me to hike at work. I was a lab tech for twelve years and maybe hiked 50 feet a day. Now due to job reductions at my company I have been reassigned. I must say I love it! I am now an outside chemical plant operator. The structure is over 100 feet high. I am now hiking at least 1000 vertical feet up and down a day on stairs and ladders. I am also walking probably 5 miles or more a day at work. I know there are probably lots of TT'ers who phsycally work at work. I haven't sine I worked construction 13 years ago. With my steel toe boots, radio, tool belt and hardhat I'm carrying as much weight as many ultralight bpackers. I condsider it training. Wooooohooooo!

Wednesday, I hiked for work. I had to walk around a lake looking for ice damage and flooding problems (hard to do with a foot of snow on the ground) and we chased a couple of drainage courses through the woods. I wish I had snow shoes, would have made the hiking so much easier!

The bathroom is down the hall. Does that count?

I walk the stairs when ever I can. Going up and down stairs at that height should help quite a bit.

Plenty of "hiking" in my business. Landscape work. Lots of hanging in trees too! Yeah! Lots of hard work to keep my muscles strong. But its never enough hiking for me. I go for beach hikes on my way home.

Occasionally i get out to a project and traipse around in the woods. Most of the times I am just walking along side a highway since thats what highway designers usually work with. I do have a highway construction project next to my office that allows me to hike 2 1/2 miles at lunch through a pretty area without any traffic.

Every noon for 90 to 120 minutes while carrying a 20-oz. stick, I walk and walk around a pool table, stopping occasionally to shoot.

I work on a campus and arrange my meetings at the other person's office to get outside and walk.

I measured my steps with a counter a few weeks ago. It counted 1200-1300 steps a day! That is equivalent to 5-6 miles a day. That was on a 10 hour day, now that we've gone to 8 hour days, I'll have to do a recount.

I walk A LOT !

The hospital where I work covers 3 city blocks. I get out and walk around visiting different departments. I'm always prepared...umbrella, good shoes, coat, etc. I can also walk to several restaurants for lunch!

I hike up and down the steps in the parking garage next door. I alternate taking 1 step and 2 steps on my way up so my entire leg gets more of a work out. I've been thinking about loading a day pack with some weight and carrying that with me.

I get an hour for lunch and we have a beautiful campus with several hiking paths and trails. Eat in 15-20 and walk the rest especially during nicer weather.

Sometimes I do... mostly I don't. Ya never know with my job where it might take ya.

I was out at a ropes course a week ago. I need to write that up. Next time I'M DOING IT!! Much better photos from above looking down than shooting up at kids.

Karo,
1300 steps at 3 feet per step is 3900 feet. A mile is 5280 feet. That is 0.74 miles. You need to check your counter.
Even if it counts every other step, it will only be 1.5 miles. You need to step it up!

I spend about six hours a day, at least twice a week, bushwacking, on compass line, through the woods; and I get paid.

Sorry it is 13,000 steps, thanks for correcting me! A full day had about 15,000 steps in it after work and everything else in a day. I bought the stepper for checking my steps at work, but i also intend to use it to check mileage on trails, since my gps won't work under heavy foilage during spring and summer and early fall.

Taking the stairs is a given for me.

I try to do a stair workout twice a day on my breaks. I walk up and down the six flights 6 times, using both the north and south flights to give myself a breather in between.
