Jeep Cherokee or Nissan Xterra?

“The Xterra is an expensive buggy...

My almost one year old Xterra has a ton of scratches and even a dent. Add that to having kidlets in the thing much of the time (though I'm just as bad) and it looks pretty well used inside and out. I don't have the time, patience or desire to baby the thing. I got it to use it. I also keep vehicles that I buy new for about 10 years, so I don't worry about it being in shape for trade.”

“One other thing you might want to consider is the cost of insurance on your car...
Some cars are known to be more "theft-friendly"... i.e. they get stolen a lot....

That might impact your insurance costs!”

“Scorch, Lemon law in PA. wouldn't apply since mine doesn't meet the requirement of 3 attempts to fix the same problem or 30 days in the shop for the first year. I'm hoping I don't have any additional problems. It's just too annoying and they never had any parts in stock that were needed to fix it so it took two trips for each problem, one to find the problem and one to fix it once they received the parts.

“Jeep Cherokee would be my opinion- heavier- wider wheel base could prevent you from tipping as easy when - going 75 down the freeway and turning - or down the trail on uneven rocks- well, maybe not, but it is heavier...... and we all know that means worse gas milage... Isn't roll over SUV accidents on the highways a misnomer- they shouldn't be rolling over on the highway- but on the trail :)”

Go to a car max IMO for the best prices on a used SUV. I know the one in Nashville was about 2000.00 cheaper than the other car lots on the Jeep Cherokee I bought”

“Thanks, Ewk, the XTerra looks more reliable, but the base V6 sucks, and the supercharged puts a lot more on the price. Whereas the Liberty's V6 is very powerful. But the XTerra has loads more cargo room.”

I have heard that on the Liberty also plus the gas mileage isn't that great.

All in all I would buy another Jeep but it won't be the Liberty”

“i have an '04 xterra. i bought it as a leftover, brand new, 12 miles on it when i drove it off the lot.

already having gear problems.... the transmission isn't recognizing when i switch gears. i gotta take it in when i'm back from vacation.

besides that? i love it. go with the supercharged. i regretted that i didn't.

i also have 3 friends who own the liberty and they swear by them. i've never been a jeep person myself.

“Ewker, in my experience Carmax is way overpriced, and lowballs on any car you take to them. Stick with Consumer Reports used car pricing service and hit your local new-car dealer's used car lot, ready to wheel and deal. You'll save a TON of money.

We tried to sell my wife's last SUV to Carmax and they offered $1000 less than we sold it through the classifieds (in less than a week). To replace it we wanted a Venture minivan, and again, they wanted $1000 more than we negotiated with the local Chevy dealer.”

“Xterra is probally a better choice then the liberty. If I were you i would jsut keep looking hard for a good deal on an 4runner.

Ok I know this isnt in your list of wanted vehicles and I am the first one to say that I think this is the ugliest vehicle ever, but you might wanna check out the Honda elements. Ugly SUV but very partical esp. for an outdoors man. I came close to buying one but decided I was gonna wait until i can afford a Chevy Crew cab colorado z71 or a Toyota Tacoma crew cab heh.

If I could afford it I would have a brand new 4 Runner right now, but ouchie on the wallet jsut to think of the price.

I'd recommend the Xterra over the other vehicles. Its a damn reliable truck, goes anywhere, comfy, spacious, but gas mileage sucks donkey balls. Oh, it also tows like a champ.

“The Element isn't known for it's ground clearance. Isn't it on a Honda Civic chassis? And just looking at it says to me that aerodynamics suck.

When comparing vehicles, I really like to go to Vehix. They line up specs side by side and you can get a good idea about which you like better.

Personally, I would by the XTerra over the Liberty. Just my opinion.”

“Bison if you are going to use it for offroad go with a used 4Runner. My dad and several friends have them and they are an awsome vehicle. Don't be afraid to buy one that is 10 years old and has high mileage. They run forever. The downfall is the gas mileage just as most real SUV's sucks.

I had a Jeep Cherokee and older one not the ones built by Cry/Dodge. The vehicle was bullet proof. Tons of power in the 6 banger and 165,000 almost problem free miles till my wife crushed it in a rollover. I should have bought it from the insurance company and made a convertable out of it, because it was still driveable after the wreck from the steering wheel down.”

“I have never driven/ridden in an xterra or Liberty. Xterra is better looking though. 4runners are awesome - comfortable and reliable. Of course, I am just biased to Toyotas, and they are more $$$, but for a reason.

Go with whatever you think drives best and has the best stats and is comfortable enough for long road trips. :)”

“techntrek, when I sold my truck to them I got way over the blue book price for it. The Jeep I bought was way under Blue Book price.
again same jeep at 3 locations and carmax beat them by 2000.00 and the mileage was 50,000 less on the one from carmax.

I also got an additional 1000.00 off because they had it advertised on the net cheaper than on the lot.

I can't complain about them at all

“Nissans are generally much more reliable than Chryslers (Jeep). That being said, everything else is a matter of personal preference.

“Id go for the cherokee, they are more established, been around forever. The 6 Cyl engine is very reliable. There is a ton of parts for them, you name it. And the Cherokee can be a very very capible offroad machine. Personaly I have a Jeep jeep (wrangler) I have alot of friends with cherokee's they like them alot one guy owns 5 LOL, and his son is named TJ (tj is a cherokee model) LOL anyway the Nissian is a good looking car but are you gonna buy for the looks? Me personaly
I think jeeps are like harleys you see some very very very olds ones on the road the reason for this is they still make parts for all those old jeeps, how many old xterra's do you see? xterra isnt very old so you dont. And also theres a ton of cherokee models. Like the grand cherokee, the limited, the eddie baur ect ect... Just my 2 cents :)

“Yeah, I was surprised at the dealership too, they were great, I did end up getting a much better deal than I would have at carmax next door. I was a little concerned because the engine really is a bit underpowered (2000 was the last year before they put in the 240 hp 3.5L V6, so mine has the 170 hp 3.3L) But I test drove it and while a little sluggish it was powerful enough. I did my research, decided what I'd pay for it, and got it for that price. Also that more powerful engine that started in 2001 requires premium gas, so that would have been a concern as far as ownership cost.

Scorch, I have not found a problem with my Xterra yet. I heard you were having some transmission trouble. I was ordering some accessories from Nissan and was told that the 2005 is a completely different vehicle. The roof rack dimensions are not even the same.”

“yea it was completely redesigned... although i do like the older body styles a slight bit better, i'm a little upset that i only have 180 hp.

i'm dropping my truck off this thursday night and picking it up friday. warranty will cover it.”
