Favorite Knives

“I know i have a few knives that follow me around where ever i go. Pics of mine are forth coming. What are some of your favorites?”

“I have a Spyderco with the nasty serated blade that is almost too damn sharp. For hiking I like the Victorinox Classic.

I\'d really really love to have a Busse but they are a bit steep in price.”

“Gerber Backpax...ok ok not a knife, but still useful.
Leatherman Wave...multitool that goes everywhere with me, even Iraq. Ok, so not on ultra light trips.
Gerber Air Ranger...very light, very strong. ive broken other plastic handled knives so metal in the handel is a must for me.
Gerber MiniGator...Good grip in wet conditions. Took it on swamp canoe trip in Everglades. Performed well.
Victronox Officer...replaced the corkscrew with a phillips head screwdriver. perfect for Iraq, not so much for wine. LOL
CRKT Mini...Goes everywhere with me. lite and strong.
Gerber Gator...Stays in the car in my kit.
The three bone handled knives are all made by Puma. The folder is the Puma Earl model, the short fixed blade is the Puma Hunters Pal, and the large one is the Puma Orginal Bowie. A return home gift from my family.
I have others, but these are my favoites.”

“Hey SS I have that knife. I carry that and leatherman Micro(mainly for the scissors) it is all I ever need also. I think I have used my knife more to slice cheese and pepperoni than anything else.”

“LtHiker - Gerber makes one almost the same.

My little Buck stays in my pocket with a Photon led light attached with a bit of string, all the time while backpacking.

“I have a gerber with half serrated and half regular (the tip end). Wally World had them on their discount bin when my son worked there. He purchased them when they dropped to $6!!! We only got 2 of them, all that was left. They are about 25-30 bucks retail.”

“realize, not all of these knives are for backpacking. I ride horses, off road, etc.. so the extra weight sometimes isnt a factor. then again, im a big boy, and if im willing to hump it, i will.”

That's not really the question, now is it?
Take what you want by all means.
But, when was the last time you really used a shealth knife for what it was designed for?
Myself, as I said above, I take the Swiss Army. I have used the knife, the reamer, the altimiter, the thermometer, the sissors, and the bottle opener. So, even though it heavy it's my knife of choice.”

“Buck Multi tool. I've used everything on it. the only thing that I wish was on it was a nail file, but an emory board in the med kit will suffice.”

“I normally carry either a Gerber Ridge Knife or a Leatherman Micra.”

“thats cool. if you notice though, i said nothing bout taking the sheath knives backpacking. the puma hunters pal, and the bowie were part of my favoites because they were a welcome home gift from my family. On a survival course, the sheath knife is more rugged, provided it is full tang, and provides more leverage in the event of hard work. A folder will always have that weak point in the lock, though custom knives and a few production knives have come very close nowadays. As for the last time i used a sheath knife for what it was designed for...evey day. A knife is a knife, regardless of blade shape, design, etc. Its made for cutting.”

“I have a small Winchester knife that is light and useful around camp

I like the Wenger Swiss Army knives. I have several, including the little ones.

I also have an Air Force pilot's survival knive that I have had for years. It's a bit on the heavy side, but has done yeoman's service.

I also have an AK47 bayonet that I keep in the car camping kit. It has a neat wire cutter when you combine the bayonet with the scabbard. That thing will cut through coat hangers.”

7/16 in thick with carbon fiber handles.

My SOG Paratool pretty much stays in my vehicle, but has come in handy on many occasions.



I also have A Swiss Army Climber that I usually carry backpacking.



I also have a Leatherman PST that I really like. I got that a very long time ago.



Both the Leatherman and the SOG Paratool are too heavy for backpacking, unless it's a winter trip when I might need the pliers to fix something on my gear sled or snowshoes.

When I used to hunt, I carried a Buck Woodsman.

“I am going to be looking for a new pocket/camping knife soon. It seems that lots of knives have foresworn the sheath and have a belt clip fastened to the outside. This looks awkward to me and I wonder if it gets in the way of easy handling and use of the knife. SAC is particularly noted for this kind of design in the CRKT products they offer but other makers do it too. Does anyone have any experience with the clip on the case design?”

“Hi, Rev. Yes I have some experience in that area. I bought a Leatherman multi-tool with the clip feature and wore it on my belt clipped on the outside. It didn't take long and I hooked it against something and the clip got pulled perpendicular to the tool. There was no way it could be bent back into its original shape and the shop replaced it. I now carry it inside my belt with just the clip on the outside. If it goes again I'll replace it with the Gerber and a pouch.

Leatherman no longer sells the clip version.

“I'm not looking for big... and for that matter I usually have the knife in my pack or pocket so I am not even overly interested in a sheath. It just looks like those clips are going to get in the way of effective using the knife.”

“I like a stockman pocket knife, medium size, because it has 3 blades, so one can be devoted to cleaning fish, one can be kept clean for food and a spare. Its fairly light, and with 3 blades at least one of them is likely to be razor sharp. I also like to take a mora knife. on backpacks for camp chores and cleaning fish. If I just take one knife, its the stockman, presently a buck medium.”

“I use a buck, or a benchmade, or a camillus. Those are a single blade, with the pocket clip. I enjoy them, easy to reach, never have to sick my hands down into the pocket to find it. Sometimes I can be found wearing one up on the tee shirt collar. At times I wear a neck knife also. Keep it sharp, no matter what type you use.”
