Oh Crap water is flooding my downstairs bathroom!! I shut off the washing machine and dipped the water out of the toilet at least it stopped flooding.

Call roto-rooter, that's the name, and away go troubles, down the drain.

Seriously though, that's what I'd do. You probably have a nasty blockage.

Dude if i had a Roto router in my area I would call them. The only plumber in my phone book that offers 24hr service can't get here until tomorrow.

I guess I will be peeing outside tonight. I hope I don't have to do anything else.

It could be worse, I had a friend who had a similar problem, only he didn't know it for weeks. All the drainage (all of it) from upstairs was flowing out of his downstairs toilet. For weeks. Ugh.

That does suck though. Hey, what's a trowel for?

Home depot rents power augers. So do most rental places. Do it yourself as soon as they open. Poor Birch had to do it three times before he finally got all the tree roots out of our drain. Now we maintain rootlessness with some great root killer stuff we dump down the toilet every month in the spring-fall.

I broke a pipe in my refrigerator or dishwasher last night & have water in my basement. Shut off some valves (I have them everywhere) & went to work. Work had enough people (after all, it's payday) & I went home to fix it. I'm thinking about it now.

I thought about renting a power auger to try to open up the drain but you know its is poop and stuff in there. Better to let the pros handle it. It is what they are paid to do.
I am very handy, it is my business, I am a handyman, home remodeler and not afraid to tackle anything, but it is POOP!!! I don't do dodo, I would probably throw up.

Joke
Ya know what the difference between a plumber and a pipefitter is?

That stuff under a plumber's fingernails ain't dirt.

Are any of the drains near the toilet slow or backed up too? If you run the water is one of the nearest lines like the bathroom sink for a little while then plunge the toilet that can help. You can buy a snake at the hardware store that may work.

And try more fiber.

When we moved in to this place, we gave my father-in-law the job of replacing the toilet. (He couldn't handle walking up and down the three flights of stairs.) After we had everything moved in, took everyone out to dinner. He had ribs. Stuck his fingers in his mouth, individually, and said something to the affect that it got rid of the "dirt" under his finger nails. Needless to say, we all said "EEEEEEEEEEEWWW".

I'll have to bear that in mind!!!!!!

Do you do any light plumbing????

We are thinking of vanities in both bathrooms .. . .

One would be a corner vanity which may mean A) opening a wall and re-running pipes a couple of feet or B) just traversing the pipes inside the vanity. . .

Anyhoo . ..if we ever get around to these projects . . ..I'll have to keep you in mind!

Deep River, right?

Hey Nigal want to come over?

I now have a backhoe in my front yard digging up my septic tank. They said that it was either that or run the auger in from the cleanout in the basement and flood the basement with poopy water.

It is going to cost about $1200 since the ground is frozen and they have to get a machine.
LtHiker
9:27:40 AM
2/01/05

Yeah Lee I could do that. Vanities are no problem. I was actually supposed to give a customer a quote today for a bathroom remodel. And I am halfway thru another one. We are waiting on a stone shelf that the customer decided to add after I had started. 4-6 weeks for delivery.

Sorry to hear about the troubles. . .

I should dump some septi-zone in my toilet when I get home. . .

I will bear it in mind that you do that kin-of work . . .

This project has been geling for about a year . .

Unfortunately . .it morphed into a whole "re-paint" the downstairs thing . . . and once that happened it all ground to a halt . .

Just for you chili...

One of the drivers who used to have to pump septic tanks said one time he was standing over the man hole in some guy's back yard pumping away and the guy came out to see how things were going. He looks down the hole, gets this real mad look on his face and goes into the house. He comes back out dragging his wife along behind him and comes over to the hole. He tells her to look down in the hole. She looks down the hole and then the guy smacks her. The driver asked what the hell was going on. The guy points down into the septic tank at a floating condom and says, "I don't phucking use condoms!!".

Busted.

Lee the sushi was pretty good. The best that I have had in this area is yooki yumi in Branford.
A friend of mine went to the Cooper Beech a few weeks ago and he said that they had one of the worst meals ever. The food was subpar and the service was terrible. He called and complained to the manager and he gave them a gift certificate for more than the meal was worth.

Gabriels in Centerbrook is very good if you are looking for a upscale meal.

Interesting re: Beech. We had a really good meal.

I had smoked fish followed by Venison. She had a pear salad followed by lobster stuff fillet of sole.

2 nice bottles of wine .. .

We are going out again soon for her birthday. We were thinking of Cafe Routier, possibly Restuarant Du Village in Chester . . which we haven't been to in years . . .

Her dad and step-mom will babysit and provide some cash for dinner . .. .so we may go the du Village route.

I'm going to build one of those 'trencherman' tow-behind backhoes this summer. I'll tear up the yard until my wife makes me stop. I usually rent a backhoe for some project or other every 5 years.

I'll probably need to replace my septic tank in the next couple years.

I really do have a condom-in-septic system story.

I was in college so still home for the summers. Time for the septic system to get pumped, guy came out, and the 3 of us were standing around staring down the hole and BSing (Dad, me, septic guy). Guy finishes up and as he's pulling the hose up something is dangling from the end of the hose. A condom.

Not one of us said a word, but the tension was electric. Could have been mine, could have been Dad's...it was never discussed.

LtHiker, we had a problem like that a little over a year ago. Turns out that when the house was built, they ran a 3 inch wastewater line into a 4 inch wastewater line without any connector. Worse was that they had bent the PVC pipe because the angle wasn't right going from the house to the septic tank. Some yo yo stepped on the pipe and covered it with dirt to hold it down rather than fixing the problem with an angle connector. When we had a partial stoppage, it leaked into the soil underneath the concrete floor on the lower floor. The guy I hired had to dig up part of the lower floor, fix the problem and then patch the floor with more concrete. It was a mess and very expensive, but the problem was solved. If someone had taken 5 more minutes when the house was originally built, we wouldn't have had the problem in the first place.

The easiest way in with the auger was to go in from the baffle box on the septic tank. Of course, the auger just chewed up the split pipe, so it had to be replaced. The guy even had to bring in a fiber optic camera to see how far back the problem went so he would know where to dig up the floor. I'm glad that's over.

It's Rid-X every couple of months and we have the septic tank pumped out every two years.

Some friends of mine bought an old farmhouse out in the country near here. Eventually they had problems with the old septic tank, and they had a guy come out to look at it. It turned out they didn't even have a proper septic tank! The original builder of the home had just dug down to the bedrock, put some concrete walls up directly on the bedrock, and routed the main drain into that space, then capped it and covered it.

Twas expensive to replace...

"Mr. Handyperson"

Syndicated columnist int he suanday real estate section recommended "Septi-zone", from the "house of Wright"

We have used it sporadically for years.

I am going to jinx myself . .but here goes.

215 year old house.

Who knows how old the septic is.

Was pumped at inspection when we bought the house 10.5 years ago.

Hasn't been pumped since.

Disclosure. We are build on sand. After about 9 - 15 inches of topsoil its sand all the way down (glacial leavings). So the drainage in the leaching field is probably pretty good.

My parents have never had any septic problems in 15 years, but the neighbors next door to them have roto rooter out there 6 times a year, and they've dug up the septic field at least 7 times that I can remember. One of the occupants kept flushing whole diapers.

I'm on city sewer, but I do use a bacterial product to digest grease and other buildup in the lines, since they're at a pretty shallow angle.
