The Spleen is 1 of 2 primary immune organs, the Thymus being the other. The spleen is the main source of B-Cells, or antibodies if you prefer. The Thymus produces T-Cells. Non-self is brought to the spleen & thymus by scavenger/antigen presenting cells and the troops are produced........................

The tonsils are part of the secondary immune organs but a first responder for all oral nasties..........

The appendex is also part of the immune response system.................

Like the appendex & tonsils, surgeons used to wack out the Thymus routinely before they figured out it's purpose. Sometimes while doing a tonsilectomy. Why? Because it shrunk after adolescense therefore it must not serve a purpose anymore. The dumbasses figured out the harm they were doing "way back" in the 70's.

Lymph Nodes - "explode" with "lymphocytes" (i.e B&T cells) when a threat is encountered...........

B-Cells are created in the Bone Marrow and hang in the Spleen with T-Cells.

The Spleen is a major organ of the reticuloendothelial system (RES) part of the immune system.

It's importance is still way up there in keeping you disease free, OK SC?”

“BBW- AIDS is the craziest damn virus. It’s nearly 100% avoidable. Lessen your exposure you lessen your chances of contracting it. Education and abstinence is the surest way to keeping from contracting it. Why is it so prevalent in homosexuals as compared to heteros? For years we didn’t even know it existed. And years after that we didn’t know what it was or how it spreads. During these years many homosexuals contracted it. Why? Before AIDS homosexuals didn’t need any birth control such as condoms. Basically it got a foot hold in the gay community a lot faster than in the hetero community. But this in no way means it started in the gay community.

I saw a guy on Larry Elder's show the other day who actually believes AIDS was started by the government to give to the black community. Sheesh!

Nigal is partly right. Let me try and recal my vast stored knowledge of the mundane. HIV first appeared as an STD in Africa and was transmitted heterosexually. This "main" strain, HIV-II (Eurocentric nomenclature) is still the prevalent strain in Africa.

One of its main mutations, HIV-1, hopped the pond at the turn of the 80's. Spread amongst homosexuals first and most rapidly for several reasons.

These being that Homosexuals tended to be more promiscuous and tended to use condoms less. The sexual freedom of the time further compounded the situation.

Some of the initial strains were extremely virulant, killing within 3 months. These probably went extinct or mutated to less virulent strains

Contrary to popular myth, exposure to HIV doesn't doom one to AIDS automatically. Infectious Dose (ID) has to be realized; the amount of infectious particle required to overwhelm the individuals immune system. Each pathogen has a unigue ID.

If the initial innoculent is less than the ID, then the pathogen loses. With HIV, for one example though, each innoculation can decrease the bodies ability to fight, thus lowering the ID. Unless there is adaquet time between innoculations for the person to regenerate.

Oral sex or vaginal intercourse with an HIV+ individual is "less" risky. You have humoral immune cells covering these areas ready to launch a defense.

Please note this is also a problem. Scavenger cells (macrophages), grab HIV here and bring the particles in to present them to T-Helper cells. T-Helper cells coordinate the immune systems reaction to pathogens. T-Helper cells are the chosen target of HIV. Our scavengers help compromise our immune system.

Please note that "less" risky is of no comfort. one encounter can deliver the required ID for the pathogen to take over.

Anal sex is most risky because the canal is relatively "immune priviledged", or immune free. Furthermore, anal sex is always damaging to some degree. Therefore, the circulatory system is exposed during this act.

With an exposed circulatory system, you have pathogenic entry and dispersion with little resistance almost immediately. More particles survive and greatly increase ones risk of receiving an ID in one encounter.

HIV, in the US, has leveled off in the Homosexual community. It is increasing the quickest in women, particularly African-American women
