I can speak with experience as to a couple of those......but I haven't been known to rate an establishment by the strength of its pork and beans.

I don't have faith in any list that doesn't include a stop at the Ark at Pell City.

Hmmmmmmmmmm
I'd do something major to get my hands on jerked pork tenderloin and peach papaya salsa.

Let's see, 1250 miles - 20:30 hours each way.

How far is Anniston from the West Virginia cook-off?

Better yet, can anyone help me with a recipe (I'd probably substitute mango for peach)?

I think that Mullins' is still using the original grease from when the place opened.

Now, one must keep in mind that although I've lived in Huntsville nearly my whole life, my family isn't from there. My Dad's an East Tennessee hillbilly, and my mom was raised in the Nashville area, mostly.

Mullins is a little on the greasy side for me. So are a lot of places in Huntsville that locals like to go. I think that there is some sort of genetic component to this, like the people who are really from Huntsville have a higher tolerance to grease.

One place they left off (and they should be shot for it) is Greenbrier Bar-B-Que out in Greenbrier. While most people like the half or quarter chicken the best, I prefer their Large Pork Plate, which is a huge serving pulled smoked pork. That, a little coleslaw, fries, and of course, the hushpuppies, are about the best eating around here as far as I am concerned.

Believe it or not we here in Ohio have some BBQ joints. We have one small chain place called City BBQ. It’s cool because it’s just like a place you’d find in KC. It’s like a barn and when you order they rip off a sheet of butcher’s paper, slap the meat on it and throw a bun on top. Thank you have a nice day. I got a sampler platter and thought it’d just have a small bit of everything on it. WRONG! They give me this paper plate piled 6” high with pulled pork, smoked turkey, smoked sausage, and brisket. There was like 5 pounds of frickin’ meat on it. All for $10. It was so good I almost had a gogasm.

No mention of Gilligan's in Dalphin Island? Great fried shrimp po-boy. After you're stuffed paddle on over to the Pub for a brew.

City Cafe isn't a meat and three, it's a meat and 4. This is a place in Northport. When I was at UA in the early 90's, you'd get a meat and 4 with sweet tea, including tax for $3.21. The 4 veggies would fill the dinner plate and the meat would be up on top. Good stuff.

Here are the ones I've been to:

Classic on Noble
The Victoria Inn
Johnny Ray's
Jim 'n Nick's Bar-B-Q
Full Moon Bar-B-Que
Milo's
Highlands Bar & Grill
Lloyd's (1937)
Bottega
Sol Y Luna
Niki's West
Peach Park
Durbin Farms Market
Heaton Pecan Farms
Big Bob Gibson Bar-B
Lambert's Café
Top O the River
LuLu's
Bates House of Turkey
Savage's Bakery
Golden Rule BBQ
Irondale Cafe
Uncle Mort's
Wintzells
Archibalds
City Cafe
Grand Hotel Marriott Resort
The Ark
Fincher'sTuscaloosa
Bob Baumhower's Wings Sports Grille
Dreamland
Boars Butt

They did list The Ark under Riverside instead of Pell City. This place is called the Ark because it used to be on a bridge in the river. This is when it was a dry county, but state waterways were wet. Their fried shrimp is better than most places at the coast.

The first time I ate at Mullins was in 1972 the last time was in 95 or 96. This may seem odd, but some of my earliest memories are of that ugly wallpaper they had in there in the 70's.

Southern Man dont need him around...
Div, you are so bad!!!!!
Bit, we used to order from the Greenbrier every Friday night when I worked at GM in Athens/Decatur. Did you ever eat at the old restaurant? It was a dive, but had the best food. We even had an offsite there at the new one back in 1989, if I remember right. I gotta drop by there again sometime. Maybe I'll go and visit ya Div., give me a good reason to get back to my old stomping grounds!

Oh yah, I did most of my eatin' at Greenbrier at the old place! There's another restaurant there now, has pretty much the same menu. More food for the money there. They're both pretty good though.
