Thanks Catskhiker, problem with sugar solution is yellow jackets, and yeah, .. have them too.

If you want the humming birds back, make a super sweet solution. It CAN be just sugar & water, but as much sugar as the solution can hold. This has worked for 100% of the folks I told it too. They do like the red color, so a little food coloring helps. Word gets around among their crowd. Once they find it, they become territorial, chasing other birds (even their own kind).

careful what you wish for...my grandfather did this and got tons of hummingbirds...he finally stopped when he was burning through 20 pounds of sugar a week!!

Reflective 2-3 foot long strips of mylar (every 20-30 feet) still working nicely keeping 85%+ of the deer out of my yard. Have a nightime electronic bobcat hisser & liquid fence to assist.

Last week, I was in my office talking on the phone giving some tech support to a client. I heard something and turned toward the window. A moose trotted by not ten feet from the window! I got up and looked out into the woods and there was another moose about 50 feet away.

Walking the dog later in the day, I saw moose tracks in the dirt road, going down the driveway toward the garage and side of the house and then around behind the house where I saw the moose.

I love living in NH!

We have a doe visiting regularly at our new house. Lots of birds, none coming to the feeders yet. Many wildflowers, a big doug fir in a ponderosa pine forest with grass and needle forest floor. Hayfields, forests, hills and low peaks in the distance.

I'm happy to report that there are 3 less raccoons in Wisconsin and one less possum but Minnesota has gained 3 of one and one of another....isn't that weird?!? LOL....

Lol, MHH! I hear ya! The other side of the intercoastal recieved several 'coons from over here. Then again a certain relative of mine brought over some squirrels and released them in my yard. I thanked him for the kitty treats.

Battling Deer
I'm battling the deer this year for the shrubs & flowers in my yard this year. I'd been popping at them with the pellot gun with no success. I saw reflective mylar strips in the local tractor store & figured I'd give them a shot. THey worked like magic for 2 weeks then dropped to about 80% effective. Added an electronic (night-time) Bobcat hisser with limited success & added an ultrasonic motion detector today. That's adjustable for insects, raccoons, dogs, cats deer etc. I really want those yard devastators gone. Hope the new neighbors don't start feeding them.

I saw a movie once where they used human hair clippings and that was very effective - but it was in a movie.

I've tried a bunch of home remedies. They say the only true effective solution is a high fence completely around your yard.

The scare tactics are only effective temporarily. That's why they have to change & be moved around to work.

70% of my mountain laurel & rhoderdendron are coming back in the 6' & under sections. The other 30% have been killed.

I'll try anything & everything. Irish spring soap too. The liquid fence product really smells nasty.

Isn't it matahari? Birch and I once had a pair tiptoeing around our tarptent at 3am. They made the oddest noises, it took what seemed like forever to figure out what they were.

I have a killer Russian Blue cat stalking everylivingthing in our neighborhood. It's irritating to see it cart off chipmunks and songbirds. Thinking about trapping it and transporting it to animal rescue. I'd be chancing incurring the wrath of the neighbors though.

lol! The real live dogs barking like mad don't phase it. Maybe I should let them out after it? I'm afraid one of them might catch it. They hate that cat more than I do*.

* Note for the cat lovers out there: I do not hate all cats, just the ones who live outside, slaughter all the little birdies and spray my front porch. I promise I won't let my dogs eat it.

catskhiker - An old neighbor of mine is a master gardener who gives lectures. He lives in a fairly rural area and says the only solution is an 8' high fence.

could someone explain to me how some of the above posts have words highlighted in blue that seem to give you an ad when you put your cursor on them...I've never seen this before anywhere...like, in catskhikers thread above the words "home" and "fence" are highlighted and treebait has the word "yard" highlighted...Pathman has the word "floor" highlighted....and yes, I have taken today's meds.....

Battle with Deer
Fencing is expensive & unsightly. I agree that it is the only real solution, but not at this time. I am effectively keeping MOST out of my yard to date along with their appetites & ticks. They say it's hard to re-route them once they have a pattern. They tend to be creatures of habit.

The 2-3' mylar worked the best. It too, is unsightly. Keeps a LOT of birds out too, but not robins or hummingbirds. Occasionally attracts crows. The nightime (bobcat) hisser every 7 mins or so I'm not sure about. THe ultrasonic (scare)noise on a motion detector has cleared out a troublesome spot. This high pitched sound is variable, so that should help. All 3 together are very effective but only until the deer get used to them.

30.06 is a bit noisy. I'd lean towards that necked down .17 cal. Friends have offered to bow hunt. Don't want Bambi's mom or dad running a hundred yds onto the road or Bambi lovers property. They think deer are cute & feed them. Then they are a nuicsance. By the time they realize what they've done, ANOTHER new neighbor (I've had a bunch) starts feeding them. The worst offender moved out last year & his property (500k) has been vacant for a year. Deer love these open fields.

I have used a bobcat recording on a (city born) duty officer that set me up (while I was on vacation) with my boss on fed property. It was payback time & he was the macho type. I recorded him moving rayher quickly to his car & trying to get the key in the lock with limited succcess, late one night. I also used it to keep teenagers out of empty buildings. Works.

I've been watching a family of quail in the back yard today. Put some oatmeal out to see if they'd eat that, and turned the sprinklers on in case they were needing water. Little ones are not much bigger than a chicken egg, hope they get big before the road runners find them.

My father told that joke to a friend of his, who in turn told it to some of the engineers he worked with. None of them got the joke, and one guy thought about it and came back to my father's friend and said, "Well maybe the geese are just closer together on that side."

We've got a drainage ditch a few dozen yards behind our house - and a small (5 acre or so) wildlife preserve a couple of blocks away - our ditch connecting with a couple of others in the water control network, link the wildlife preserve with the "country" just outside of town. Well, the other night I spotted a coyote crossing the street along the ditch - we hear them a lot at night, but it was cool to see one.

Also, I spotted two racoons the other night on my run - right at dusk, they saw me coming and were trying to squeeze into the sewer entrance just as i went past. It was cute - they got just inside the sewer and then just watched me jog past.

We've got something digging up our yard, and making a big mess. Started right after our dog was put to sleep. Several folks suggested it was skunks.
Anyone have any ideas on getting rid of skunks?
