Another thing you'll often notice is how a “V” changes shape.
Sometimes it looks more like a check mark, with one bird flying lead,
two or three birds trailing on one side, and the majority of birds
strung out on the other. This too is a strategy for dealing with wind.
It usually means a crosswind is blowing — the short side of the
formation is taking the brunt of the wind, while on the long side, the
birds are attempting to shield one another from it.

LeS: My Dad live traps them and transports 'em. He hasn't gotten sprayed yet. He covers the trap, all but a tiny peep hole he uses to keep an eye on the tail. If the tail starts to rise he sets the trap down and waits an hour before moving it again.

Early this morning (6:30 a.m.) I had to drive to South Bend, about an hour away. I left before sunrise. On the way right as it was getting light, I saw a flock (?) of turkeys in a yard next to the road. There were at least a dozen of them. Are they called flocks?

Nope, dinner. ;-)

I believe flock is the proper term.

A flock of geese, if not in flight, is sometimes called a gaggle.

I just found the answer to my own question. It's rafter of geese.

You mean rafter of turkeys? That's so weird, I was just wondering that the other day.

Oopsie. You're right, Lyra. Rafter of turkeys; gaggle of geese. Hmmmmm...what do you call a group of TTers?

So I'm still stuck at my parents' house until tomorrow morning, when I can go home. I was out in the yard with Laurel, while she picked her umpteenth bouquet of flowers. I watched two large male anoles (green lizards) just about fight each other to the death over a group of female lizards. They both had bloody snouts, holes ripped all the way through their skin along their sides, and one had two toes removed, one from each hind foot. Poor things have testosterone poisoning.

So my daughter just got all excited because she found a little toad in the back yard here. I showed her how to capture and hold it carefully. She's got it on my parents' screened in porch, talking to him.

Bear Kills Moose in Alaska Driveway
By Associated Press

HOMER, Alaska - Odd sounds outside their home woke Gary and Terri Lyon early Sunday morning, so Gary got up to check it out. He looked outside and saw a 500-pound grizzly bear killing an adult moose in their driveway.

"I saw this wildlife spectacle of a full-grown brown bear on a moose and the moose fighting for its life," Gary said.

The couple put their dog inside, grabbed their cameras and started filming the attack as the grizzly battled the moose down the driveway, finally killing it. They posted the video on YouTube.

"She tore apart the chest cavity, ripped out the heart and ate it," Gary said. "It was like she knew that's what kept it alive."

Only a few mouthfuls later, the bear left the carcass and ran into the woods.

The Lyons contacted authorities, who sent state wildlife biologist Thomas McDonough to remove the dead moose. He brought it a half-mile down the road and contacted a chartity to harvest the meat. But he suspected the bear would return.

The prediction was right. The bear returned later that night, judging by the fresh tracks found Monday morning. The Lyons are now locking their doors, trying to avoid a more dangerous confrontation.

"I've lived here for almost 30 years, and I've never had to shoot anything out of defense of property," Gary said. "It was just doing its own thing that the species has done forever. Unfortunately, it was in our yard."

There's a large fox or small coyote tooling around the neighborhood all morning, so instead of just the 2 dogs next door barking all the time, there's about 25.

The motion dectector lights came on just before 11 PM last night. I looked out the window and saw my first bobcat turning to head into the woods a few feet from the window.

I looked out my kitchen window saw a couple deer walking through the trees... not unusual... but always nice to see. I put my head down again to finish the dishes and when I looked up, there were two men in yellow and orange construction vests walking the same way through the trees... freaked me out!

Ruh roh. The only times the squirrels have ventured out of the lowland trees and up to my yard is for water. This has me watching the little buggers (and other forest denizens) even
closer.

squirrels
i read the same article this morning. have you noticed that the squirrels around here are consistently smaller, and their tails are much less bushier. ive been wondering if its because of the population increase and lack of food. our bird feeder has been under heavy attack all year...

The squirrels around here are much bigger than any squirrel I left behind in Florida. They haven't bothered my bird feeder, but my neighbors are having a lot of problems with squirrels and 'coons.

I like it a lot. The drought sucks big time though. I finally have really cool neighbors (Read: not drug users and psychopaths) that I can socialize with. Lots of decent places to walk around here, too. I mean as in sidewalks and greenways. Where I was at in Florida, it was dangerous to walk around alone.

We saw more than 20 deer in one field this evening, on the way to dinner. They were all banding together. Isn't that kind of behavior a little early this year?

Our "pet" crow is visiting right now. He was just on the ledge outside my office, then flew up to the tree branch nearby. Now he's going "Caw! Caw! Caw!"
