The dates would be Tuesday Aug 16 to Tues Aug 23. That's 8 days/7 nights. The distance is about 70 miles. This trip would involve a great deal of planning, there is a long shuttle, several large river crossings including the Yellowstone and the Snake, and at one point on this trail you are 30 miles to the closest road. Anyone interested?” 8:51:30 AM 2/08/05 “Interested?? Sure, but I can't go......bastard!!” 8:53:47 AM 2/08/05 “That area has Griz doesn't it? What kind of elev changes? I'm kinda interested.” 9:00:50 AM 2/08/05 “Very little elevation change Stove, the first few days are essentially flat as you hike along Yellowstone lake and through the thorofare which is a broad valley, then you make a couple of moderate climbs over the continental divide and over a tall ridge. And yes there would be plenty'O Griz around, hence the 4 person minimum. MarkO - This would be a monumental trip, I think you should find a way to work it. last edited: 2/08/05 9:04:19 AM” 9:03:03 AM 2/08/05 “Is embear going? If a griz gets after us, we could out run her. ;-)” 9:04:28 AM 2/08/05 “Moderate, huh? Dang!! There are lots of places I want to go. Olympic National Park Mount Rainier/Wonderland Trail Grand Canyon at Christmas” 9:06:43 AM 2/08/05 “I'm with MarkO. Heck yeah I want to go. I can't, but I want to.” 9:12:48 AM 2/08/05 “Nah, Embear's too short, the griz would never see her it'd just keep coming after us... Stove were also doing a few other trips that you might be interested in although dates are all tentative right now - Great Western Divide loop in Seqouia/Kings Canyon - Sun July 10 to Sat July 16 Kerrick Canyon/Matterhorn Canyon loop in Yosemite - Mon July 18 to Sat July 23 A hike in North Cascades - Sat Jul 30 to Wednesday Aug 3 The Teton Crest - Either Thur 25 Aug to Mon 29 Aug, or Mon 15 Aug to Fri 19 Aug. The Lizard Head loop in the Winds - Either Tues 30 Aug to Sun 4 Sept, or Sat 20 Aug to Thurs 25 Aug.” 9:18:47 AM 2/08/05 “Holy Crap! Are you guys off all summer? Dream trips galore!” 9:21:00 AM 2/08/05 “Yep, off all summer before moving to Denver hopefully.” 9:22:19 AM 2/08/05 “Interested but I'll be in Glacier those exact dates.” 9:39:21 AM 2/08/05 “Interesting, we'll be in Glacier the week before.” 9:41:14 AM 2/08/05 “Oh yeah, you're moving to Denver too!! Now I really hate you!!!” 9:47:55 AM 2/08/05 “Stovie! You should come on one of these! Yay!” 9:51:30 AM 2/08/05 “Bison, I think we should post some of these trips after all. You are right about people making summer plans early.” 9:53:33 AM 2/08/05 “Hey Bison, I would definitely be interested. I currently have a dive trip scheduled for that same period but if it falls through and you have room, I'll contact ya. Sounds like a great trip.” 10:31:26 AM 2/08/05 “Bison, I know this will disappoint you but I won't be able to make any of your trips.” 10:33:40 AM 2/08/05 “Ewker you wuss, these are awsome trips, there's no excuse for not coming out for one of them!” 10:45:35 AM 2/08/05 “I am already going to Ca for a 8 day trip in July. That is all the vacation time I get.” 11:10:19 AM 2/08/05 “Which one Ewker? If you're trying for the Sierrapalooza trip and end up not being able to get a permit, think about joining our Great Western Divide or Yosemite trips.” 11:12:36 AM 2/08/05 “This is tempting” 11:14:38 AM 2/08/05 “Interested... won't know for sure until much closer to that time, depending on financial/job situation.” 11:15:25 AM 2/08/05 “Yeah Y2 you gotta come out west this summer!” 11:16:14 AM 2/08/05 “The permits have already been applied for and received (the Ca. group did that). I have booked my motel reservations..just waiting on Southwest to get to July so I can book my flight.” 11:16:56 AM 2/08/05 “Is embear going? If a griz gets after us, we could out run her. ;-)” StoveStomper 9:04:28 AM 2/08/05 Hey, how did I miss that? You might be able to out run me, but not a grizzly. I will just blend in with the flowers......:)” 11:23:15 AM 2/08/05 “Gemini needs to come on this one.” 12:29:26 PM 2/08/05 “I think if I make any trips out west, this will be the one.” 12:31:09 PM 2/08/05 “So come on then you guys, what's the news that's gonna allow you to spend most of the summer out west?” 12:32:41 PM 2/08/05 “Hey Bison, if you can't get anyone else to go you should still do it solo. I did a solo trip in there a few summers ago but going in from Turpin Meadows. There are some cool advantages going in from Turpin Meadows, one beings that you get to hike up the Buffalo Fork which is so beautiful, then you get to be up on Two Ocean Pass and see the "Parting of the Waters" which is exceedingly rare and wonderfully cool, then descend Atlantic Creek and drop into the Thorofare with great vistas down into the wild valley as you go. I can hook you up with a gal I know who goes by "Lone Eagle Woman" who spends her summers back there. She's a wealth of information. Like me, she's traded cashflow for streamflow and she finds her gold in the sunsets. She goes solo as well. I encountered grizzlies on my trip. It's a thrill like no other. Even sleeping solo in grizzly country 30 miles from the nearest trailhead is an indescribable thrill in itself. When the sun goes down it gets downright exciting, and the wild feeling of roaming the grizzly-infested northern Rockies spoiled me and now hiking in the Sierra feels too safe. It's lost it's edge. I'm all for reintroing the grizzly back into California.” 12:53:23 PM 2/08/05 “Over my dead body he is going solo.” 12:56:42 PM 2/08/05 “ ”1:04:04 PM 2/08/05 “yeah, I am interested, but not sure if I am able to go. The July's are out of the question. Well, the July30th..would be okay too I guess. They others...hmm...doable I guess. Oh boy..I do wanna go.” 1:04:12 PM 2/08/05 “I pretty interested, but that Gemini person is pretty scary. Don't know if I can hike with her. ;-)” 1:06:49 PM 2/08/05 “Wow, lots of interest for this one, I think we're gonna have to go ahead and plan on it! Buck, thanks for the info, see if you can make one of our trips.” 1:08:46 PM 2/08/05 “stovy...I scare you? really?? :(” 1:11:21 PM 2/08/05 “I've also heard from someone that has hiked with Bison and embear that they take a looooooooooonnnnnnnnnnggggggggg time to crawl out of their tent in the mornings and that lots of 'funny' noises come from the tent before then. That might attract bears. ;-) Gem, Gem, Gem... - note the ;-) last edited: 2/08/05 1:14:54 PM” 1:13:36 PM 2/08/05 “What can I say, we like to enjoy the wilderness to the fullest ;)” 1:14:41 PM 2/08/05 “and you know that was a big ass lie because treebeard is #&%!$ing that I wake them all up at 5am. heeheehee” 1:15:44 PM 2/08/05 “Who told you that Stovie? Ewker? He is just jealous....” 1:19:00 PM 2/08/05 “Nope, not Ewker. MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHAHAHAHA I have my sources. ;-)” 1:21:09 PM 2/08/05 “I've hiked here before, God the bears are everywhere, I wish, I could go back.” 1:24:09 PM 2/08/05 “Okie dokie. So Stovie and Gem are coming now. Right? :)” 1:26:08 PM 2/08/05 “ ”1:30:53 PM 2/08/05 “Awwww, Bison's family portrait...the little ones are so cute.” 1:32:35 PM 2/08/05 “ ”1:35:40 PM 2/08/05 “em, i can't tell you for sure yet. you know...school is starting around that time, I have to figure it out. Hey..were there's a will there's a way...right?? something along those lines. and stovy: pfffff!! not talking to you anymore. last edited: 2/08/05 1:40:26 PM” 1:40:04 PM 2/08/05 “What's with the Tuesday starts?” 2:22:20 PM 2/08/05 “Did that Thorofare loop last early autumn with 6 people in a group. Beautiful hike, pretty easy except one strenous day over the continental divide. Abso-friggin-lutely awesome. Be prepared for variable weather if you go late in the season. FYI - it was frigid (around freezing) in the mornings first week of Sept, we had rain the second day that was significant snowfall on the pass. A group got turned around and had to come back down. Seems I recall someone saying they looked ill-equipped but I didn't talk to them myself. Have a great trip!” 2:24:17 PM 2/08/05 “Embear, I love your photos, assuming they are yours..... Bison, I got absolutely great shots of the thermal features in Yellowstone -- except that I had inadvertently moved my exposure compensation to -2 so they print up waaaaaaaaaay too dark. But do leave time to take photos of thermal stuff.” 7:35:24 PM 2/08/05 “ Lamar Valley. Ignore the crap in the lower left hand corner. last edited: 2/08/05 7:41:16 PM” 7:40:19 PM 2/08/05
