Possible Yellowstone Trip

“I'm really interested in hiking the Thorofare this summer but I'd like to have a group of at least 4 people, so looking to see if at least 2 more people would be interested. The dates would be Tuesday Aug 16 to Tues Aug 23. That's 8 days/7 nights. The distance is about 70 miles. This trip would involve a great deal of planning, there is a long shuttle, several large river crossings including the Yellowstone and the Snake, and at one point on this trail you are 30 miles to the closest road.

Anyone interested?”

“Very little elevation change Stove, the first few days are essentially flat as you hike along Yellowstone lake and through the thorofare which is a broad valley, then you make a couple of moderate climbs over the continental divide and over a tall ridge. And yes there would be plenty'O Griz around, hence the 4 person minimum.

MarkO - This would be a monumental trip, I think you should find a way to work it.

Great Western Divide loop in Seqouia/Kings Canyon - Sun July 10 to Sat July 16

Kerrick Canyon/Matterhorn Canyon loop in Yosemite - Mon July 18 to Sat July 23

A hike in North Cascades - Sat Jul 30 to Wednesday Aug 3

The Teton Crest - Either Thur 25 Aug to Mon 29 Aug, or Mon 15 Aug to Fri 19 Aug.

The Lizard Head loop in the Winds - Either Tues 30 Aug to Sun 4 Sept, or Sat 20 Aug to Thurs 25 Aug.”

“Hey Bison, if you can't get anyone else to go you should still do it solo. I did a solo trip in there a few summers ago but going in from Turpin Meadows. There are some cool advantages going in from Turpin Meadows, one beings that you get to hike up the Buffalo Fork which is so beautiful, then you get to be up on Two Ocean Pass and see the "Parting of the Waters" which is exceedingly rare and wonderfully cool, then descend Atlantic Creek and drop into the Thorofare with great vistas down into the wild valley as you go. I can hook you up with a gal I know who goes by "Lone Eagle Woman" who spends her summers back there. She's a wealth of information. Like me, she's traded cashflow for streamflow and she finds her gold in the sunsets. She goes solo as well. I encountered grizzlies on my trip. It's a thrill like no other. Even sleeping solo in grizzly country 30 miles from the nearest trailhead is an indescribable thrill in itself. When the sun goes down it gets downright exciting, and the wild feeling of roaming the grizzly-infested northern Rockies spoiled me and now hiking in the Sierra feels too safe. It's lost it's edge. I'm all for reintroing the grizzly back into California.”

“I've also heard from someone that has hiked with Bison and embear that they take a looooooooooonnnnnnnnnnggggggggg time to crawl out of their tent in the mornings and that lots of 'funny' noises come from the tent before then. That might attract bears. ;-)

“Did that Thorofare loop last early autumn with 6 people in a group. Beautiful hike, pretty easy except one strenous day over the continental divide. Abso-friggin-lutely awesome. Be prepared for variable weather if you go late in the season.

FYI - it was frigid (around freezing) in the mornings first week of Sept, we had rain the second day that was significant snowfall on the pass. A group got turned around and had to come back down. Seems I recall someone saying they looked ill-equipped but I didn't talk to them myself.

Bison, I got absolutely great shots of the thermal features in Yellowstone -- except that I had inadvertently moved my exposure compensation to -2 so they print up waaaaaaaaaay too dark. But do leave time to take photos of thermal stuff.”
