Here's some Thorofare pics from Lone Eagle Woman. Each link starts a thread of pics. She spends her summers here. I don't mean just hiking here each summer a coule times, she basically lives here.

Hey outback®, those are some fine pics! I love Bridger Lake, which I'm sure would be considered the most remote lake in the lower 49 states (that number includes Iraq). I camped near Bridger Lake a few nights and the fishing for fat cutts was incredible. Gracias for the link to your pics.

Beautiful Backcountry
If you want breathtaking scenery, spectacular fishing, and interesting geothermal features, there's a couple of trails leading into Shoshone lake that are great. I've canoed into it from Lewis Lake before as well. Quite far off the beaten path, and very pristine. Make sure wherever you choose, that you plan your trip well in advance and secure your campsite reservations early. They limit the numbers of people they allow into most backcountry destinations.

I can't think of the name but in the Nortwest Corner their is a pass that is a Buttkickers wet dream. Hard as Hell with the most spectacular view in the park, so I've been told.

We were on the trail "behind" the Thunderer but went over the "Thunderer" instead of to the Buttkicker. Our iterary consisted of an "S" pattern with three trails involved. We saw no other people back there. The trail was overgrown and in one area absent due to lack of use. We saw one guide with a man on a pack animal and one soloist on the Thunderer.

I'm surprised you aren't gonna do the buttkicker.

;)

I don't think so. "Pass" Is in the name. it might be right outside YNP near that town in the NW corner. "The" road goes to the town and near the pass. Damn, I wish I had my map.

Uhhhhhhhhhh. Make that NORTHEAST!

Near Cook City

Our last campsite was 3C4. If we had continued E/NE it would have taken us out of the Park and to the pass. but we doubled back to the Thunderer.

Cache Mountain Pass? This is killing me.

BTW - The Northeast Corner is chok-full-o-wolves. We saw The Druid pack on an early "recon" trip.

Bearmag - I dont want to do 8 days of a buttkicker. This trip is just about enjoyment of the beautimus area there.

Yes, that's why we're taking a very, very long, but very flat trail. Big stream crossings and remoteness though so there'll be plenty of adventure.

We started out at Sodus Butte and walked behind Lamar/Thunderer. The elevation gain was very slow. The Buttkicker might take a day and the decent looks worse.

the only real problem back there was it was part of the Big Burn and the trees that were growing back were about chest high. We all burned from the lack of clouds.

But out West they have those really interesting trails that zig zag. Made the Thunderer a cake walk.

God I need more coffee..

Next week!
You're right BM--Republic Pass. Our cabin is a little below the trailhead on the Cooke City side; I've been up to the pass from there. You come out on Cache Creek (and ultimately into the Lamar Valley), which where we're skiing into next week. We're going to start at Soda Butte and ski either up Cache Creek or keep going up the Lamar River, depending on the snow conditions.

So there's a little extra element of adventure. You gonna come along on this one Y2.

I wonder if they'll be showing those specials on BBC America anytime soon?

oh, and you'll prolly find it on PBS rather than BBC America. BBC america gets the stuff that no-one else,, like discovery or PBS wants to buy. Most of the documentaries on PBS were originally Brit made.
