sat·in
n.
1. A smooth fabric, as of silk or rayon, woven with a glossy face and a dull back.
2. A garment made of this fabric.

adj.
1. Made of or covered with satin.
2. Glossy, sleek, and smooth.

So, it would seem that there is not necessarily any difference.

Silk is a material. Satan is the Devil.

Silk is "natural"

Satin is "genuine synthetic"

Someone is making homemade gear again!

sacco, you don't happen to have a yard or two of that blue left do you?

Same materials, just a different touch and appearance. Satin is very smooth and usually what bridesmaid dresses are made out of. Silk is much more delicate and usually thinner. Silk also has a distinct smell to it.

thanks for the info guys.

for my next project i'm making a polarguard 30* quilt.

outside will be nylon DWR, inside will be satin lined for extra warmth (and that cozy comfy feelin)

DH, i'll check tonight. don't know offhand what's left on the roll and i still need a couple yards for another project.

I stupidly got enough fabric for the poncho, but didn't add enough length for the hood. I thought about using the orange for the hood, but there is no way any self respecting graduate of the University of Alabama would EVER wear orange and blue.

Satin is a weave.

Silk is a natural filament and can be woven into many fabrics.

2 so totally different things.

just don't use the white for the hood!

I thought about it since everything else was blue...it wouldn't have "the look" that you're referring too. I wound up using all the white for one huge tarp.

and where's your iggy pics? (tapping foot)

seriously, besides "that look", i wouldn't use the white where water might pool up for an extended period as it didn't appear as impenetrable as the other colors.

From what I understand you can have satin made of silk, but not all satins are made from silk. Like dhutch1 posted, satin refers the weave, where silk is the actual fiber used.

The quilt looks nice. It looks like the one from Thruhiker.com. I bought some of their 800 fill power down a few years ago and it was nice.
We lost most of the snowpack here and with more rain coming this afternoon the rest of the snow doesn't look like it will be around much longer.

I'd like to make a sleeping bag because it's the one piece of gear I never made other than a plain trail blanket. I'm still trying to convince myself that I really need another sleeping bag.

I'll probably make a 0* late this summer. I enjoyed doing the quilt and it's not near as difficult as you'd think. I need to add straps like sacco has to get mine a little better rating. 40* is comfy now with 3" of loft.

you can never have too many sleeping bags, as long as the new one you get is better in some way than the ones you already have.
