keep the unions, but get rid of the "agency shops." those who choose not to join the unions get no union protections or benefits. what could be fairer?”

that's the problem, there should be no "protections"...all employees should be equal...if two people screw up the same way, both should go, or both should stay...no one should be protected...same thing with wages and benefits...if union employees make more than non, that would lead to even more union resentment

i'm not against unions...if you want to organize to lobby your employer for better pay, benefits and working conditions, more power to you, but it should be voluntary and the unions should not have the power to hold an employer hostage...the notion of a strike is ridiculous...you don't come to work, you don't have a job

It's about not going back to the days of Starmen and unfair labor practices.

Citing the Unions get more money and better benefits supports the argument that Union provide a better lifestyle for those involved.

This situation is not about shared sacrifice; it's about busting up the Unions so that wages can be driven down to maximize profits. The UAW proved that it can work with business for mutual benefit during the last implosion of the Big 3; benefits and wages are not what they were pre-implosion.

I agree with the statement that folks who don't want to pay dues should not and should not receive any Union help with workplace issues. I think that is only fair.

A problem is that Union has lost the messaging regarding how Unions helped build this country. Rank and file has diminished dramatically over the years to a fraction of what they once were. If getting rid of Unions was the answer, we wouldn't have the issues we have now.

Why is it that folks are alright with shifting economic power from the middle class to the wealthiest 1% of the population, a population who hasn't had to be encumbered one bit during the downturn of the economy?

Do we really want to be a country of minimum wage workers?

call it vocational free market. you can choose to pay for union and get the benefits, or not. i like the idea of unionization (altho i think their power needs to be limited) but im not insisting that YOU get into a union. why are you insisting that i cant have a union (with teeth)?

if union employees make more than non, that would lead to even more union resentment

it would lead to ppl saying "hory sheet, maybe i should join a union"

...the notion of a strike is ridiculous...you don't come to work, you don't have a job

the notion of not having any leverage is what is ridiculous....you dont treat and compensate your employees adequately, you dont have production

The solution is rather simple: limit donations to politicians.

Done.

toothless yes, ineffective no...you can be effective based on your powers of persuasion and presenting a good case...it's when they use their "teeth" to force an employer to do something that i don't like

i'm not saying you can't be in a union...i'm just saying that if you do something that warrents being fired or punished that you are, regardless of if you send a few bucks a month to your union

the notion of not having any leverage is what is ridiculous....you dont treat and compensate your employees adequately, you dont have production

you just helped prove my point...employers should "do the right thing" and be free to decide what the right thing is based on recruiting and keeping good talent, not because a union forced them to do so

i think we agree on where we want to go, we just disagree about how to get there...police and teachers are horribly under paid, but i don't think using force is the way to resolve it

unfortunately many states are faced with the unpleasant reality of having to layoff teachers ...in the corporate, non-union world, layoffs are usually done by production and quality...however, in most school districts where unions are strong, it's done by seniority...so now, not only is my kid's class size going to increase due to the layoffs, but he's also going to be taught by a crotchety old coot using teaching tactics from the 30's...that's messed up...let them keep the newer more effective teachers

Teeth = money? Follow the money and you'll be lead to the problem.

Here it is folks. The SEIU had a little get together over the weekend to plan a little economic terrorism and the subsequent demise of America. This isn't conspiracy stuff, it's them talking about in their own words. They are communists and want Capitalism to crumble.

Big deal, you say? aNDY sTEARN OF tHE seiu WAS THE #1 VISITOR TO THE wHITE hOUSE THE LAST 2 YEARS, IT'S A MATTER OF PUBLIC RECORD.

This is shocking
And I quote

" * How do we bring down the stock market?
* How do we bring down their bonuses?
* How do we interfere with their ability to be rich...?

So a bunch of us around the country think, who would be a really good company to hate? We decided that would be JP Morgan Chase and so we are going to roll out over the next couple of months what would hopefully be an exciting campaign about JP Morgan Chase that is really about challenge the power of Wall Street ...

The goal would be that we will roll out of New York the first week of May. We will connect three ideas:

* that we are not broke there is plenty of money
* they have the money - we need to get it back
* and that they are using Bloomberg and other people in government as the vehicle to try and destroy us

Where we have brave and heroic battles challenging the power of the giant corporations. We hope to inspire a much bigger movement about redistributing wealth and power in the country and that labor can't do itself that community groups can't do themselves but maybe we can work something new and different that can be brave enough and daring and nimble enough to do that kind of thing."
