Yeah, he obviously didn’t read the whole thread because he says…

“Further, what Nigal fails to mention is that this particular walmart store had been losing money prior to the union effort.”

Not only did I not deny this fact I openly admitted it and clarified the point.

“I'm drinking coffee from Wal-Mart right now, made in my coffeepot from Wal-Mart also. My crockpot is cooking away filled with low priced food from Wal-Mart.”

Went and did my weekly shopping there just yesterday and saved about $50 over my usual bill at Krogers. I will concede that unions may have their place and use in certain places and it is every worker’s right to unionize. It’s legal so I support that right. As long as the union does things legal like I don’t care who they deceive and get to join. It’s when they start doing the bomb threats and the like (of which they have a long history of) that I think they are dangerous. It is also a legal right of the employer to not cave to unions and to close up shop. It is also my right to drive 5 miles passed a union grocery store to shop at a non union store where I KNOW the prices will be lower. Granted my groceries won’t be bagged in the highly efficient and skillful way a union store might do it but it will come out better on my weekly receipt and will add up at the end of the year. But because I want to keep more of my own money and save money I somehow hate my neighbors and want to see them out of work? Right…

Workers are just capitalizing on economies of scale when they join unions. It's kind of like when two businesses merge or an alliance is created. The result is better bargaining power with suppliers.

When workers join together, it creates a more efficient marketplace.

An individual, after all, is simply a corporation of one.

When Microsoft increases profits, it's good.

When Walmart increases profits, it's good.

When an American worker increases profits, it's good.

"Have you seen our trade deficit lately?”
- Reformed Lurker

Sure, and it's not pretty....same in Canada. Everything that's being produced in China, India, Thailand etc. are being shipped back to north America (and other countries). If our hourly wages weren't so high (taxes too), maybe some of those companies i.e. Nike, Panasonic etc. would keep the jobs here.....and we would import less.

BB - have you considered that many Wal-Mart employees use it as a second job and thus work part time AND have their health benefits paid elsewhere?

Please tell me that I’m not the only one who sees the irony in the fact that there is so much talk about corporate responsibility and ethics while 50% (probably closer to 75%) of these posts are being posted on COMPANY TIME? Everyone wants to complain about productivity and company loyalty yet no one wants to talk about their own productivity and loyalty. It’s the same old spoiled American worker mentality of the company owes me; not that I might owe the company something.

"Unfortunately the concessions of the union agreement have caused the store to be unprofitable and Walmart is closing the store." Wonder if the union’s going to be there for these poor people they duped into committing vocational suicide?

Nigal - no, you really don't owe the company anything if you are making them money. They DO owe you a fair wage for your time and efforts and some benefits. It's not a gift when a company pays you for a day's work.

Uhh, I think Nigals point is that if you're posting on TT then you're not working.

I see his point. But they also don't own me, even for the nine, ten or more hours I'm here for a day. I'm paid to fulfill a role for them, and I do it, successfully. If I need to work longer then I do so. My company is lucky to have me, and thankfully they appreciate this. If you're completing your job successfully then I don't think they should dictate how exactly how I spend my time when I'm with them.

Does that also enable you to use company owned equipment for goofing off? I'm using company owned equipment now, but just asking the question.

Here's another question, you're reading TT and the boss walks by, do you
a)minimize TT
b) keep it up and say high
c) keep on surfing?

I think the answer indicates how one really feels about surfing the net at work.

Yeah, as long as I don't cost the company anything, or do anything disreputable or illegal.

Now Sasquash, had you actually read the whole thread you would have seen that I discussed this point in full with Silent J. I really hope you read negotiations better than you read TT.

BTW- I thought TT sucked and wasn't worth your Holiness? LOL! Got ya!

The Hockey Helmet Brigade at the AFL-CIO cuts it’s own throat and divides the union. They want to spend all their money on paying off politicians and a block of four unions (1/3) want to spend 50% of the money on new membership.
Man I love watching stupid people fight stupid people. It’s like a dumb on dumb crime.

Labor shot itself in the foot a long time ago. Percentage of the workforce that is union peaked at about 53 percent to currently about 16 percent, according to CNN piece last night.

My numbers were off. Here's the correct figures from the CNN website:

When the AFL-CIO formed in 1955, about 35 percent of American workers belonged to unions. Today, unions represent about 8 percent of the private-sector workforce.

Y2 - They financially and otherwise support specific parties over others.

As an American citizen, when a government union does that, that should upset anybody.
