Alternative MedicineView MessagesAlternative Medicine vs Traditional Medicine “I was wondering what kind of Alternative Medicine do you use? I have been reading about Homoepathic Medicine and do not really know a lot about it. I know you use more herbs and less doeses at a time but where do you find all the herbs? I can try to grow some of them but how long do they keep. This is whole new world for me thanks” 8:38:06 AM 2/11/05 “Hey Mapes, Start by seeing a D.O instead of an M.D. Same medical training, excepting a D.O uses more natural cures instead of writing out a script for everything. They generally have some extra training in stuff like acupuncture, etc. I love the book "Health, Happiness and the Pursuit of Herbs" by Adele G. Dawson. It has descriptions of herbs, where to find them, in which season and what parts can be used for what, from medicines to seasonings. For example, it tells how Indians used milkweed juice to cure warts and also infused the roots to use as birth control. I'm hesitant to actually self medicate with herbs but enjoy the book none-the-less. BTW, the book is published by The Stephen Green Press last edited: 2/11/05 8:46:20 AM” 8:45:27 AM 2/11/05 “I have a huge book called Prescription for Nutritional Healing that is great because it\'s all laid out very catagoricly. Costs $16. You see excerpts here” 8:48:49 AM 2/11/05 “I only ask this because I am about to take a two day workshop of this subject for wildlife. there are not a lot of vets that practice this form of medicine” 8:50:38 AM 2/11/05 “Real Indians use duct tape for warts.” 8:51:52 AM 2/11/05 “My vet spent a week at a vet center in Boston that did nothing but wholeistic pet care. I haven\'t seen him sense he got back but I\'m interested in seeing what he may be planning for his practice. Here\'s a cool page full of links for ya.” 8:57:14 AM 2/11/05 “I don't know much about this alternative medicine. I do know that my mom (who has lung cancer) is trying some stuff and it seams to at least stopped the cancer from growing. Personally I think that for every illness some sort of natural cure is out there. We humans just haven't been smart enough to figure it out yet. On that note, because we have not been smart enough, I rather would like my mom to go to the real doctor and get some real medicine for her cancer. :(” 9:05:38 AM 2/11/05 “Sometimes if I have a blister on my big feet, I pee on them. Supposed to toughen up the skin.” 9:07:17 AM 2/11/05 “I ain't peeing on my damn blisters.” 9:09:19 AM 2/11/05 “My parents have been using a juice drink made from a fruit from Southeast Asia. My dad has cancelled knee replacement surgery 3x, due to fear of the operation and recovery. AFter taking the juice for 2 months, he no longer takes ANY pain medication for his knee. He also isn't taking his allergy medication anymore. My mom's problems with her sciatic nerve have ended. Gemini, similar to your mom, my uncle has pancreatic cancer and more tumors in his stomach. He's been taking the juice as well (more doses per day than my parents) and per his last MRI, none of the tumors have grown. Theoretically, he should be dead by now. He's been feeling quite well, and is in no pain from the cancer. I think all those people know know about folk medicine and such actually do know something about what they're doing. We should pay more attention to it.” 9:11:22 AM 2/11/05 “It ok, Gem. W Knee will do it for you! It's going to be a kinky Friday, peeps!! last edited: 2/11/05 9:12:36 AM” 9:12:00 AM 2/11/05 “Yeah... it worries me though. glad you told me about your uncle. Tree....kinky, kinky, kinky!! too bad that it will have to be without me as I'll be leaving to buy me an expensive ass dress for the dance this weekend. (hell no I am not paying for it, hubby wants to show me off...he pays.) hahahahaha last edited: 2/11/05 9:18:26 AM” 9:15:14 AM 2/11/05 “What juice is this Smiley? And can it be ferminted?” 9:15:56 AM 2/11/05 “Have a good time Gem,!! I was j/k about Knee, though. He wouldn't do that for just anybody. He's not that kind of boy!” 9:16:25 AM 2/11/05 “WK look at it this way how would you feel to have your wifes doctor wipe it out and pee on her while she is giving birth? his reasoning is that it is good to toughen her up? LOL” 9:17:13 AM 2/11/05 “Wipe what out?” 9:17:42 AM 2/11/05 “Boy R Kelly would love this thread!” 9:18:35 AM 2/11/05 “lol...” 9:19:52 AM 2/11/05 “I'm not sure Nigal, I don't think my parents have tried that yet! LOL! I wonder if fermenting it would destroy its anti-oxidant and anti-inflamatory properties, though.” 9:19:55 AM 2/11/05 “I spelled it bad? you know, excuse me while I wipe this out....” 9:20:22 AM 2/11/05 “Whip.” 9:22:05 AM 2/11/05 “Wipe what out?” 9:22:05 AM 2/11/05 “you are all laughing, but I have a friend in germany who actually pees on her wounds. Ewww...I have never understood that. and YES, she is very strange!!! I am sorry, but that's where I grab the neosporin.” 9:22:23 AM 2/11/05 “Well, actually, in an emergency, the urine of a healthy person is sterile and makes a good wound wash. However, in a non-emergency situation, sterile saline or clean water is preferable.” 9:23:19 AM 2/11/05 “Homeopathy is based on such a..............ignorant hypothesis that I might really upset people here. Might as well use crystals to heal yourself.” 9:24:55 AM 2/11/05 “I take it you don't believe there is anything that works out there that the AMA doesn't recognize, Bearmaggy?” 9:27:26 AM 2/11/05 Wounded Knee “See I was right! If you post on TT, you must be a bit weird. lol” 9:27:50 AM 2/11/05 “I've heard that peeing on a cotton ball and stuffing it in your ear is good for ear infections.” 9:28:34 AM 2/11/05 “I know that you can pee on yourself if you have gotten stung by a sea jelly. yes it does work. LOL whip wipe same thing in my book :) you pee on me I am wiping it out!” 9:28:38 AM 2/11/05 “Not true, Tree. I think. Can you name some outside AMA recognition? besides Homeopathy? Homeopathy really bugs me. Please note - many a product in the Alt. medicine world has been found to be quite hazardous. Unfortunately most of it is not regulated. So while the govt goes to court to get this crap off the shelves the FDA goes to stores and BUYS all of it up for safety concerns. ALL stores. My friend in Buffalo came home once freaked out because the MAN came into her Co-op and grabbed a particular product. Wonder how much an operation like that costs? Then again to see 3 or 4 FDA agents storm a Co-op must be very entertaining. last edited: 2/11/05 9:35:17 AM” 9:34:52 AM 2/11/05 “all kidding aside, is it that far fetched to think that using a different means of medicine to heal your self? I mean the Native Americans have been doing it for hundreds of years. look at the chinese and all that they do. so why is it so taboo here in the states?” 9:35:56 AM 2/11/05 “so why is it so taboo here in the states?” mapleleaf 10:35:56 AM 2/11/05 Wrongful death Lawsuites.” 9:37:59 AM 2/11/05 “I don't know a lot of specifics off-hand, Bear. It's really not a subject I am ready to back myself up on, so I will not go there. I do have a doctor I trust implicitly and he has studied a lot of alternative medicine in China in recent years. I guess I m just going on some of the sketchy info I have gotten through him. Truthfully, it's not enough for me to put together a cohesive argument to the point where I may sound like I know what I am talking about. So, pardon me for seeming to cop out on this... last edited: 2/11/05 9:38:52 AM” 9:38:34 AM 2/11/05 “I stay away from herbs. They are an unknown entity, so I deem them unrealiable and unsafe in certain cases. Remember when Kava was the rage? Now I forgot what it does to you that was later found out, but it's not good.” 9:39:19 AM 2/11/05 “so does anyone know about homoepathic medicine? from what I gather, it is different because instead of giving a full does, you do a little at a time. you also work on the entire body. mind, spirit. everything.” 9:42:11 AM 2/11/05 “To think that there are not natural solutions to health problems is just silly. What? There was no healing before Bayer and Fazier came along?” 9:46:21 AM 2/11/05 “Nigal, I just feel if an herb can be used medicinally, then you have to know what you are doing, how often to use it, how to use it, how much to use etc. I don't know what all the medicines are, but scientists get extracts from plants and bugs and animals all the time to produce medicine, but they are tested before they hit the market, and even then after time, they find out some things are harmful. There are some vitamins that can be toxic if you take too many, so it's something to take seriously if you want to use herbs.” 9:51:57 AM 2/11/05 ““Nigal, I just feel if an herb can be used medicinally, then you have to know what you are doing, how often to use it, how to use it, how much to use etc." The same goes for modern medicines. We don't discount them for this reason. Yes, you do have to know how to take natural meds but the info isn't that hard to find. The book I posted a link to is very specific and well laid out in this respect.” 9:55:20 AM 2/11/05 “This came from a site that sells Kava: Kava Warning: Ask a health care professional before use if you have or have had liver problems, frequently use alcoholic beverages, or are taking any medication. Stop and see a doctor if you develop symptoms that may signal liver problems (e.g., unexplained fatigue, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, fever, vomiting, dark urine, pale stools, yellow eyes or skin). Not for use by persons under 18 years of age, or by pregnant or breastfeeding women. Not for use with alcoholic beverages. Excessive use, or use with products that cause drowsiness, may impair your ability to operate a vehicle or heavy equipment. Kava-Kava should Not be taken on a daily basis for more than four weeks without consulting a health care provider. You can't just start taking any old herbs and as much as you want. It also said Kava can cause liver damage, and people were using it like crazy to relax themelves.” 9:57:50 AM 2/11/05 “next time you see a comercial for meds listen to the warnings and side effects...” 9:59:13 AM 2/11/05 “LH, st the same time, look at the Vioxx situation. Here's a popular drug that was shown to be rather dangerous and taken off the market...” 10:03:49 AM 2/11/05 “I am going to pee on all of you! MOOOOOOOOHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA” 10:05:51 AM 2/11/05 Let the Believer Beware “Mapes: From wikipedia. The bold is mine. ;) There are 3 “natural laws” that Dr. Hahnemann devised that form the basis of homeopathy: similia similibus curentur—let like cure like, which is explained further in this article; the theory of infinitesimals—the more a substance is diluted (in a certain way), the more potent it becomes; the theory of Psora—according to Hahnemann, 80% of all chronic diseases are the result of suppressed psora (“itching”). It must be noted that even the most ardent proponents of homeopathy do not mention this particular law of Hahnemann. The theory of homeopathy holds that symptoms are expressions of an underlying condition which can be cured by a remedy prepared from a substance that has similar properties—in Hahnemann's words: similia similibus curentur (“let like cure likes”). Two examples of substances used are sodium chloride (a.k.a. table salt) and lachesis muta (the venom of the bushmaster snake). It is a misconception that homeopathic remedies are only based on toxic substances. The homeopathic concept of disease differs from that of conventional medicine—the root cause of disease is believed to be spiritual rather than physical, and a disease is thought to manifest itself first in emotional symptoms (e.g. cravings, aversions) and if left untreated gradually progress to mental, modal and finally physical symptoms. As the disease process is thought to begin long before any physical manifestations appear, it logically follows that homeopathy regards bacteria and viruses as effects, not causes, of disease.” 10:09:30 AM 2/11/05 “WK, you're a pisser!! :)” 10:10:01 AM 2/11/05 “Next thing ya know BearMag will be saying prayer doesn't work either.” 10:10:16 AM 2/11/05 “The dilution process Homeopathy defines the potency of its remedies according to how diluted they are; the more diluted are considered stronger. The process of dilution is called potentization. The potency is defined in terms of a number, where the higher the number, the higher the dilution. 30X, for example, is 1020 times more diluted (and thus, according to homeopathy, more potent) than 10X. This is in contrast to conventional medicine and biochemistry, which hold that the effects of a substance are always due to its physical and biochemical activity in the patient's body, and therefore that generally the more of an active ingredient is present in a drug, the more effect (whether positive, negative, or both) it will have. Some homeopaths believe that, while lower dilutions may have more of a physiological effect, higher dilutions may have a greater effect on the mental or emotional plane. Much of the controversy surrounding homeopathy concerns the mechanism that would lie behind the effectiveness of highly diluted substances. Critics argue that homeopathic substances are so diluted as to contain nothing of any value: indeed, that no molecules of the supposedly active substance remain in the most dilutions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homeopathy” 10:11:39 AM 2/11/05 “Tree, I agree that medicines that are approved can still be deadly. Maybe some medicines need to be taken over a lifetime to be proven totally safe, but in our society, we give a certain number of years to which we deem is acceptable for the medicine to be somewhat safe. If we waited a lifetime, many people would die and suffer when they could be helped. On the other hand, I bet you could probably do a search for whatever medicine and type the name and "law suit" next to it and come up with a class action lawsuit for every drug out there. Then when it comes down to the really deathly ill people, they take the experimental drugs and are happy to do so if it can extend their lives since they can't wait to see if it's harmful. My cousin died of mesothelioma, from breathing in asbestos. There is no cure and he took experimental meds. They fvcked him up, but it was his only hope. Unfortunately, they didn't work and he died anyway.” 10:11:58 AM 2/11/05 10:12:21 AM 2/11/05 “Like you say, Lippy, there simply isn't enough testing time to be sure about everything. So, we have to accept that as a given. I do suspect, although I am limited in knowledge so backing this up is hard, that some of these herbs and alternative treatments have probably stood longer test of time than a lot of medern medicines. The only thing is, who has tested them, and does the AMA want to recognize the Chinese, Native Americans or what-have-you?” 10:14:46 AM 2/11/05 “if you still believe then for a small fee I can turn any substance you send me into Gold. Just let me find my hat............................. ”10:16:19 AM 2/11/05
