“What are "props" and what is the origin of the word and how has it come into our usage? I truly am interested in language and vocabulary. "And I gotta give the unions props for 5 day work weeks and apprenticeships.” birch 3:07:22 PM 2/11/05" last edited: 2/12/05 1:50:21 PM” 1:49:57 PM 2/12/05 “'prop'er respect or acknowledgment.” 2:11:42 PM 2/12/05 “oh, like "dis" respect, its "prop"er respect? Right on, I am down with that, my man. So, any idea on who coined it?” 2:18:03 PM 2/12/05 “limpy, can I get a prop?” 2:21:53 PM 2/12/05 “David "Poo Poo" Johnson. Seriously, who ever coins slang?” 2:37:36 PM 2/12/05 “I thought it was Chuck Spears.” 2:50:39 PM 2/12/05 “ ”4:39:03 PM 2/12/05 “propositions. As in are you propositioning ME ?!???!!” 4:51:58 PM 2/12/05 “now dats what I calls mad props!” 5:19:38 PM 2/12/05 “Yo, props to whoever comes up with the origin of props...” 12:05:48 AM 2/13/05 “its a crash! bang! thang! you wouldnt understand” 7:22:37 AM 2/13/05 “Props make my bateaux go go.” 8:00:37 AM 2/13/05 “Wicked props to all my hommies and beyatchez!” 8:11:49 AM 2/13/05 “Make sure you properly prop the props.” 8:46:36 AM 2/13/05 “I think the origins of the term are older than some people think. In Aretha Franklin's version of Respect, as well as Otis Redding - I hear: "I'm out to give you all my money but all I'm askin in return, honey, is to give me my propers when I get home (Aretha says "whenyou get come") I see it on lyric sheets differently (I just looked it up to verify)... it's "proper respect" in several places, in one place it's "profits" in another its "respect."” 9:20:40 AM 2/13/05 “Now, we are getting somewhere! Who would name their kid Uretha?” 10:13:52 AM 2/13/05 “Props are what your boyfriend/husband wears when he comes into the bedroom dressed as a fireman. You know, the boots, axe, etc.” 11:56:55 PM 2/13/05 “NOW we're getting somewhere!!! ;)” 11:59:58 PM 2/13/05 “So Lipstick..... tell us more about this thing you have for men in uniform.” 6:52:09 AM 2/14/05 “Right on, I am down with that, my man. Limpy 3:18:03 PM 2/12/05 Wicked props to all my hommies and beyatchez!” Wounded Knee 9:11:49 AM 2/13/05 Stop please or I will be forced to turn you in for slang vandalism. Limpy for being outdated & WK for the grievous crime of putting "wicked" with "props". "Mad props" is the correct phrase. "Propers" (sometimes "Proppers") is synonomous with "props" and not neccesarily the origin. last edited: 2/14/05 8:02:31 AM” 7:57:57 AM 2/14/05 IM(not so)HO... “Props are short, bandy legged, almost neckless men and women with crooked noses and fingers and extraordinary lower back strength who like to bang heads and speak a language known only to themselves. After the match they buy their adversaries a beer, or bring it to the hospital and discuss technique knowing full well that if they had played well they would not be able to dress themselves the next day. 'Luik at THEM,' my old coach would say, pointing to us, 'they'rrre ta'kin' Prrroap.' Aaaah yes, sigh. Sometimes an older Gazelle will point to an old prop who's come out for the match and a libation and whisper some almost incredible anecdote in a youngster's ear who would then nod and stare at what was left of your nose. Everybody else PLAYS rugby, while the front five WORK rugby.” 2:52:10 PM 2/14/05 “I thought a prop was that thingy on the back of a boat that made it go.” 3:01:02 PM 2/14/05 “props 2 da peeps wiff da mad skillz” 3:38:10 PM 2/14/05 “The wooden 2 by 4's that hold up the walls of a rednecks house.....” 4:27:38 PM 2/14/05 “hobbit, I did date a cop, so he didn't have to rent the uniform, lol. Maybe it has something to do if the uniform represents an authority figure. Do I want to be overpowered or do I want to overpower the authority figure, hmmmmmm.” 5:09:11 PM 2/14/05
