It's hard to pick one.

I haven't been out west yet. I really enjoyed climbing the Black Mountain range, Mt. LeConte and Mt. Washington.

Most dramatic would probably be Mt Marcy (NY), and it offered a beautiful 360* view of the cloud that surrounded it.

I thought that both Marcy and Mt Craig (NC) were pretty cool, but both mountains still owe me a view...

Personally, I think Katahdin (ME) is the coolest mountain, but being that I haven't actually climbed it yet, I guess it doesn't count for now, does it?

Solo hike up Harney Peak, Black Hills. March 2000. Snow along the way and very icy trail near the end, where I had to use arms to propel myself up steps at the old fire tower (no flat surfaces to put feet on). First time use of trekking poles. Saved me ass! :-)

Iron Creek Point - 10,000 ft.
Lemhi Range, ID

Nothing big, but it was my first Rockies hike.

First time at that elevation (my truck has since been higher).

First mountain goat (day after a grizz encounter).

From summit, I could see Sawtooths, Bitterroots, White Clouds, Lost Rivers, and Salmons.

Exhillerating.

By chosing...
one thing over another, you dishonor both things.

Chosing "favorites" is such a waste of energy...why chose, they are all great and deserve honor in their own right.

OK, after a BS answer like that I have to respond, LOL.

Mt Shasta would have to be my favorite. She's my favorite because she's close to home, has many beautiful routes and perhaps most importantly, I have many, many memory's from climbs and ski trips on her....some good, some bad. She's a very powerful mountain.

id like to say lincoln or lafayette or a few other peaks in the whites, but they were so crowded so as to diminish the pleasure. for now, ill say katahdin, for what it represents and for the fact that i and the other thrus had some time alone with the mountain before the tourists showed up

Cool Thread
Toss up between Mt. Katahdin and Mt. Washington.

Mt. Katahdin is awesome because of its remoteness, and the Knife Edge route to the summit is incredible. I've summited it three times, and will add at least a few more this summer.

Mt. Washington has the worst weather in the world, with hurricane force winds over 100 days each year on average. I've climbed it twice, and will also add at least a few more this summer.

Hard to pick which one.

Gothics in the Daks. Had the peak all to myself that day. It took everything I had to give, and the view was fantastic.

Second would be Colden in the Daks. Not the highest thing around, but that was its charm, nestled between Marcy and Algonquin with that view down into the Hall of the Mountain King (Avalanche Lake).

I was in a cloud on Marcy once too, Phantom Soul. The cloud would lift momentarily and then fall back down, so views would appear and disappear, like apparitions. The effect was muted, though, but the presence of a gaggle of other hikers.

Mt. Washington is indeed awesome, but way too much stuff up there. And I didn't climb it. Time on a Maine vaca was short, so my brother and I drove up.

C!B!... BUFFALO! LMAO! Yeah, I remember you talking about that hike. I should get back out to the Black Hills this summer. Really wanna do French Creek Natural Area, although there's a lot of other stuff going on out there I also want to do, so we'll see. If'n ya go, write me first, so I can tell you where to definitely see buffalo.

Mt. Sterling is a good mtn, so was Big Tom - I kinda liked Big Tom more than Mitchell, Mitchell was crowded with regular folks.

Hard to pick a favorite though.

Big Tom/Mt. Craig is a good steep climb too. On clear days, Mt. Craig, with it's 180 degree view is one of the best I have ever seen. Plus the alpine scenery on Mt. Craig is really cool too. Not to mention that it is the second highest peak in the east next to Mt. Mitchell, which it is literally next to.

Well it's no Whitney or Katahdin but the thing I like the most about it is that its N of the Arctic Circle in trailless tundra and is several hrs by plane to the nearest human and the kicker,,it's rarely climbed.

According to my topo of the Preserve it's 2540. A mole hill to many but challenging enough to be memoriable.

A veiw from the top,,notice the ductape on the boots,,thats ankle support. Rubber boots where the only way to travel.

I have favorite passes, but only Mt Harvard in CO stands out for mountains. It was my first off-trail and first rock scrambling. My companions, Poppycock and Cindylu, were as good as the mountain.

Whitney was hazy when I was there. When I came over Trail Crest and saw all those mountains spread out before me, I cried in gratitude. It's the passes that get me every time.

In the USA? Its gotta be Telescope Peak in Death Valley (11,082 ft). Great 360 degree view of the desert landscape from the top, and the smog from Los Angeles and the Central Valley hasn't quite gotten out that far yet. Disclaimer - haven't been to the top of any USA peaks east of Nevada/Arizona.

Outside the USA? Cotopaxi in Ecuador (19,350 ft). Great sunrise view from the top, great 360 degree view from the top of the surrounding mountains and countryside, and a pretty impressive view down into the volcano's crater. (Its a long dayhike from a hut).

I gotta say Mt. Rainier because of the challenge. It's technically difficult, got great views, and is one I'll always remember. The big downside is the crowds.

crash bang -I know you're kidding, old buddy. It's probably the most photographed and most climbed mountain in the world. And it's been mentioned at least twice in this string. Most photographers so not show a lake in the foreground. I've been trying to determine if it is one of the Five Finger Lakes at the base of the mouuntain.
BTW, I did not see any @ until after it was posted. I did not find one at the top or at the bottom of the site.

Jeez, you missed the $64,000 question. It's Mt. Fuji. Sorry, crash bang, I forget that I've been around longer than most folks here. It's 12,338 feet high and can be seen from Tokyo on a fairly clear day. We did the Gotemba Trail from the bottom(by a mistake), which the Japanesse consider crazy. Most of that trail is black sand from the ash in which one keeps sliding back. People love to come down it, running, jumping, rolling and sliding. The season is July and August. Previously, on an August 31st, after starting in beautiful weather, it changed and we were forced to turn back. We finally did it on July 4, 1987, returning down on the next day. I left Japan late on the afternoon of the 6th. Crossed the International Date Line, so after returning to Melbourne, FL, I was able to play pool during the evening of the 6th at my favorite pool hall. I remember because some drunk argued that I could not have returned from Mt. Fuji that quickly.

Tell me about it! Climbing up it was pretty different from what I'm used to in PA.... it was a blast though.

We climbed it off-season in May. There was a ton of snow on the top still.
