I'm normally a traditional cotton boxers guy in the city, but in the name of banishing cotton, tried synthetic briefs a few years ago. Problem is, I often hike in hot, humid places and the briefs have given me serious jock itch. I went back to cotton boxers because the chafing is not as bad as the jock itch and controllable with a little Gold Bond (which unfortunately makes me smell like my grandfather). Does anyone have some suggestions for the perfect hot weather hiking underwear?

I hike in river shorts and just rely on the liner.

How breathable is the liner on those river shorts? I tried using a bathing suit with a mesh liner and still got crotch rot.

Yeah, I guess I should get over my Victorian prudery and go without. Does nylon chafe when you freeball?

I wore similar shorts during an August hike on the AT.
That damn liner and the heat and sweat was chafing my 'boys' bad.
I had to stop and cut that damn built in liner off the short with my pocket knife.

Bearmagnet -

Ever hiked the Texas Gulf Coast in August? It's in the high 90s with 99% relative humidity, and no breeze. Your bits and pieces are swimming in sweat that has nowhere to go all day. Even for a dayhike, you can shower in the morning before the hike, then shower when you get home, and you can still get jock itch if you wear anything brieflike. If you freeball, you're rubbing together all day.

Didn't we have a thread on this subject once in the past?

Wear whatever works for you...

I've tried the duofold briefs and they worked great...I've tried swim trunks with the nylon liner and they worked great...some people just have more trouble than others. Fortunately, I've never had any trouble in that department.

The mesh on river shorts is a bit more open than swim trunks. I usually take some Duofold fited type of boxers with me too. I don't usually wear them, but have them in case there is a chafing issue.

Why is the whole synthetic line of garments advertised as if they are less stinky? At least with cotton jumping into a lake cures some to the stench, with the synthetics the odor just holds on until you find a washing machine.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Mountain Hardwear's Mountain Kilt. I'm also surprised the nongender version is no longer produced. Never tried one but reviewers prone to crotch rot praised them.

I'm not sure I ever read that a synthetic item is less stinky - unless that's because I'm not looking for that quality so I skip over it. I like the faster drying, lighter material of synthetics. Though I prefer wool for some things.

Synthetic garments tend to stink more than natural fibers, but they dry faster. In the past few years, manufactures have been adding something to synthetics to make them more resistant to retaining odor. That is why they advertise them as such.

I wear boxer breifs on the trail; it's the best of both worlds: They "hold it all together" like briefs, and like boxers, they don't cause any "discomfort" because of "extended" wearing. Also, the material is a cotton-polyester hybrid (good ol' Fruit of the Looms) to get a good balance of quick-dry and not smelling too badd too quickly.

Nothing stops a hiker dead in his tracks like chafing. To me that's a very high priority to prevent.

When In Panama Canal Jungle Warfare School 25 years ago , One of our special forces instructors had ask us too remove all undies,
They hold bacteria. I have never put them back on.
I hate underware. My Grandmother buys them every year trying to convert me back to the norm, but no way.

I have saved gazillions of money not buying them, and washing them. You do have to wipe real good though.

Under Armour Boxer Briefs...
Under Armour Boxer Briefs... allow sweat to transport through and dry quickly and slippery microfiber keeps legs (and other unmentionable body parts)from rumming. Most comfortable things I've ever worn hiking... I wear them running too! see http://www.underarmour.com/ua2/ua/detail.asp?dept_id=87&pf_id=0867&mscssid=
