it seems various people are offended and/or threatened when calls are made for the abolition of off topic crap. Most of them are those who rarely or never backpack. Go figure.

some random thoughts...

1) "trail talk" is not unique to thebackpacker.com - so are all boards with a "trail talk" going down the tubes, or just this one?

2) not all trips posters to this board go on are posted on the trip page, and not all trips show up to the general public (i.e. private trips)

3) not everyone feels the need to post every step they take on the trail on this board.

4) there's a lot of space wasted on threads about what some think others are or are not doing. (i.e. the "less, more" threads, et al)

5) and here's a revelation - there is life beyond thebackpacker.com - repeat as necessary until it sinks in.

LMAO...

“it seems various people are offended and/or threatened when calls are made for the abolition of off topic crap. Most of them are those who rarely or never backpack. Go figure.”

Quite an assumption there. I think it’s about attitude. I think people simply don’t like their hobbies to be made into a scale of worth by others. To assume that the amount of backpack related posts are somehow connected with time on the trail is stupid. I find the people who do this type of thing are the same one’s who brag about mileage and count bag nights in some effort to validate themselves. Backpacking’s not about validation for me. It’s about enjoyment.

is this a non backpacking thread or does whining about not talking about backpacking make it a backpacking thread? If you post a cartoon about backpacking, does that satisfy the criteria. What about posting about a job that will allow yo to takes days off to go backpacking, thats a backpacking thread correct?

Damn it. Where are the rules posted? We must comply. We must comply.

you missed the point
all I am saying is, trail talk should be dominated by threads about gear, trails, up-coming trips, trips past, trips possible, dream trips and other backpacking topics. It's not about bragging at all.

off topic crap is just and has been for some time now, excessive. It dominates the board. Backpacking/hiking related threads sink almost immediately to the bottom. I think the board should be dominated by backpacking threads, that is all.

Says who? It should be about those things or it would be nice if it were about those things? Go look at the post count for sites that are like what you just described and compare to what you have here.

I know that this thread is just a joke, but if someone really doesn't like the chatter can't you just turn off the chatter link and they won't show up on the list of threads. What a country. Do that and you will think this site is to gear/trip oriented.

Well, there is always the ultimate solution ENS. See that little red X in the uppermost right hand corner. Click on that. It’s just like TV. You don’t sit there and cry about how bad a tv show is for ½ an hour. You change the channel.

BTW- Great thread! :)

oooo Hyway, Good idea! There you go EnS, Hyway solved your problem.

There was a time when most of the threads were gear or trip related. How much can a hiking pole be discussed though?

it's funny to me how this thread has evolved.

i started it as a little joke based on the yuppy REI thread. never really expected it to go further than a dozen posts. i really never intended or expected it to become ebanott II.

but that's ok. it's still amusing in an odd way. kinda like being a sober person and watching a bunch of drunks argue over nothing at all.

A small dose of reality - Trail talk is much more than a message board about backpacking, It is a community. Most of the people in this community spend only a fraction of their time backpacking or hiking. People in a community talk about their lives, not just about one particular hobby. Those who hike a lot here I would guess don't even spend 15% of their time hiking. So why should anyone expect that the board is going to be dominated by discussion about hiking?

"Go look at the post count for sites that are like what you just described and compare to what you have here." - dayhiker

That hit the nail on the head. As one who runs sites myself, I've read up on this stuff. To create an online community you need to have widespread, daily interaction. Just talking about backpacking day-in and day-out would get old. Fast. Visitation would drop off hard after a little while, instead of the minute-by-minute and daily visits most people here do.

You gotta have off-topic chatter to keep a board "alive" or else it dies and/or stagnates. If you want TT to remain as active as it is, you need the non-backpacking talk, too.

LOL Nigal!

Off topic threads have always been part of this board, always will be. Don't like it, uncheck chatter and/or general - oh yeah, if ya do that, you wouldn't be able to read THIS thread! LOL!

YES - the one where I asked ENS how he knows who backpacks and who doesn't...unless of course, he wasn't serious, which means that I wasn't serious either, which means I can go back to pondering the meaning of life since ENS really isn't all knowing.
