Planning a trip to Linville on March 12, I have a contact, a local there. That has been kind enough to show me the trails and the highlights. What he is not sure of is any campgrounds with showers or motels and so on. Anyone camped up there at such a place.
I\'m not sure if I will car camp, or stay in the gorge. I\'ll be taking photographs, these will be very long days 430am until an hour after the sun sets. I will be driving up from Columbia SC, Anyone know the fastest way to drive from there to the gorge.

You might check the trips page for a previous trip in JAnuary. THere was a good bit of discussion on this because the hurricanes cause a good bit of damage up there.

Linville is really pretty. My wife hiked with me to the last overlook when she was 5 months pregnant. Gosh, that was almost 4 years ago!

Thanks Dayhiker, I took a look at most of that stuff and the photos too.Looks nice, I was there about 20 years ago( God I'm old) I'm going to camp in the gorge a couple of days I'm sure.

Showers can ruin a good trip.

The faster way there is slowly. Anything else and you may end up elsewhere.

good luck - the last I had heard was that the trails in the gorge were closed - not that it matters all that much

Hurricane Flood Damage Update (02/01/05)

"Linville Gorge Update. All trails in the Linville Gorge have been cut open; however there is still needed treadwork. It is still not recommended to do any overnight camping in the Gorge. There are a lot of snags that can pose an unsafe situation.

For more information, contact the Grandfather Ranger District, 828-652-2144."

gorge
I'm not sure if its faster to go 77 to Charlotte to 485 to 85 to 321 to Hickory or 26 to Spartanburg to 85 to 221 to Marion. Up to Pineola take either 221 out of Marion or 181 out of Marganton. Again I'm not sure which is faster.

The down by the River CG is in Pineola, at intersection of 181 and 221. Or you can car camp along Gingercake Road or Kistler highway. I don't know when the NPS CG at Linville Falls will open. There is a small hotel in Pineola, also Linville.

Lots of places to bed down in gorge, or up top.

Highway lives down by the great salty sea.

Take the rangers advice with grain of salt. I have never seen one off trail ANTWHERE, except Crabtree Lakes in Kings Canyon. Try not to get hurt as rescue in the gorge can be problematic. Have fun.

Matt, I should be called Flatlander Hy since I live on the coast of NC. Highest elevation - a 60' sanddune.

That would be a great help, I may camp in the gorge, but most of the time I hit a campground, after a long drive and before my return home.A B&B or a mom and pop motel are nice too.

Looking for waterfalls in this area, I have looked up most that are on maps and the net. anyone know of a fall that gets overlooked in this area or south into SC or any covered bridges that are out of the way or not on the net or maps.
