How do you camp with your dog?

“I usually let my black lab sleep in the tent with me. When she is very wet and muddy, it is not too ideal. I have been looking on the internet for some doggie tents, but didnt know if anything was light enough for her to carry. What does everyone else here do for their dog's sleeping arrangements?”

“Yes, definitely need some ideas here, the idea of myself, embear, and muddy, wet, Layla, in a two man tent doesn't appeal to me...”

“Usually Forest sleeps in the tent with me, the reason I have a 2 person tent, he carries his weight, he deserves to have tent space. Unless, like you said, he's wet and muddy, I'll make him sleep in the vestibule, or just outside depending on weather.

vestibules are great for wet, muddy dogs.

personally i don't think doggy tents are very practical at all.”

“You could pitch a tarp for her to sleep under in those cases. A 5x8 urethane-coated tarp is plenty big enough and cheaper than a similar silnylon tarp.

Here's one, $20 and 12oz.”

“The problem is keeping her contained so she doesn't wander off, so tarp and vestibule aren't really options.”

“My dog would definately wander off in the middle of the night if she had access to get out. That is the main issue - keeping her warm and dry, but also nearby.”

“well ok, so you have a point. I guess I just wouldn't trust mine outside by himself, as he gets the call of the wild every now and again. Will be camping with him v soon.
I've got a big 2 person tent, which will be enough for three of us. There's also some loops in there which while not enough to stop him moving should he really choose to, will be enough to persuade him to stay at the bottom of the tent with a little encouragement.
I guess Layla might just be more inclined to be in a tent by herself. D would be out of there the minute I shut my eyes.”

Plus you can leave the pole at home and string it up from a tree. If I come to Va for that trip I will probably bring it. Look for sales

But if you're getting a new tent anyway, the lighted and cheapest option would be to get one with a good vestibule, buy or make a footprint for the vestibule, and get a short, light wire to tether her to Bison with. Any attempt to escape and he'll be dragged out the tent and be the one who'll have to get her back in, leaving you warm and snug in the sleeping bag.”

“Right now I use a tarp when I'm out with my dog. I just put in an order for some notions so I can finish making my 1 person and 1 dog tent. I think it's too much to get a tent with room for an extra person when a dog takes up considerably less room.”
