How do you camp with your dog?View Messages“I usually let my black lab sleep in the tent with me. When she is very wet and muddy, it is not too ideal. I have been looking on the internet for some doggie tents, but didnt know if anything was light enough for her to carry. What does everyone else here do for their dog's sleeping arrangements?” 10:44:14 AM 2/18/05 “Yes, definitely need some ideas here, the idea of myself, embear, and muddy, wet, Layla, in a two man tent doesn't appeal to me...” 10:46:20 AM 2/18/05 “Usually Forest sleeps in the tent with me, the reason I have a 2 person tent, he carries his weight, he deserves to have tent space. Unless, like you said, he's wet and muddy, I'll make him sleep in the vestibule, or just outside depending on weather. last edited: 2/18/05 10:48:08 AM” 10:47:25 AM 2/18/05 10:48:38 AM 2/18/05 “would have thought a good vestibule would be a good thing. I'd worry about my doggie hearing something in the middle of the night and heading off for a wander though.” 10:49:23 AM 2/18/05 “no vestibule on your tent? vestibules are great for wet, muddy dogs. personally i don't think doggy tents are very practical at all.” 10:49:39 AM 2/18/05 “You could pitch a tarp for her to sleep under in those cases. A 5x8 urethane-coated tarp is plenty big enough and cheaper than a similar silnylon tarp. Here's one, $20 and 12oz.” 10:50:26 AM 2/18/05 “The problem is keeping her contained so she doesn't wander off, so tarp and vestibule aren't really options.” 10:51:44 AM 2/18/05 “Leashing isn't an option?” 10:52:22 AM 2/18/05 “My dog would definately wander off in the middle of the night if she had access to get out. That is the main issue - keeping her warm and dry, but also nearby.” 10:52:44 AM 2/18/05 ““Leashing isn't an option?” bitpusher 10:52:22 AM 2/18/05 that's what I was thinkin' we can tether her under the vestibule.” 10:53:33 AM 2/18/05 “Bison just got a "huge" bonus! - Get him to buy a tent with a good-sized vestibule. Non-muddy days doggie goes inside, muddy days in the vestibule. Here's a nice one http://www.hilleberg.com/Catalog/nallo_2_gt_2005_3878010.htm” 10:53:39 AM 2/18/05 “She has chewed up every leash I have kept on her at night.” 10:54:13 AM 2/18/05 “do you really think your dog would stay in another tent all night. I agree with Y2 I can see the dog hearing something and taking off after it, unless you zip it up by itself then it may whine all night, Just buy a 3 person tent that way you have room for everyone” 10:54:22 AM 2/18/05 “Nice, but I'm not spendin' 530 on a tent no matter how much money I have, the vestibules in the tent we plan on gettin' are big enough, but we need a space where she can't get out.” 10:55:24 AM 2/18/05 “lol - sure you could rig something up with a footprint for the vestibule and some ingenuity.” 10:56:35 AM 2/18/05 “She has slept in a tent by herself before and was fine. She wont whine very long. I have a steel cable that she cannot chew through, but it is ultra long and heavy.” 10:57:03 AM 2/18/05 “if she's a night time wanderer, you think a little tent's gonna hold her? i'll bet you'll be packing out a shredded doggy tent” 10:57:33 AM 2/18/05 “Good point sacco. But, the one time she did sleep in a tent by herself, she didnt even try to get out once.” 10:59:43 AM 2/18/05 “ ”10:59:55 AM 2/18/05 “I'd just make sure there was room for three and maybe work out some way of keeping her on a sheet or blanket or something.” 10:59:56 AM 2/18/05 “Yeah bit! Next time we go backpacking together, you can bring that for Layla. LOL!” 11:01:00 AM 2/18/05 “Y2 - you ever slept in a tent with your doggie? Just curious. Layla is almost as big as me, so I would really have to have a 3 person tent to fit her. Plus, she has a hard time getting comfortable, so she changes positions constantly and ends up trying to sleep on my sleeping bag.....with me inside. Its not very fun.” 11:04:29 AM 2/18/05 “just buy this 4 season, 3-4 person shelter from Golite, It will be on sale b4 long. It weighs less than 3 lbs with the pole and stakes..the insert is shown which you don't need ![]() last edited: 2/18/05 11:06:57 AM” 11:06:13 AM 2/18/05 “Tie a line between two trees. In the center, attach a light chain which attaches to the dog. Cover the line between the trees with a poncho or tarp to make a 'puptent'.” 11:06:14 AM 2/18/05 “well ok, so you have a point. I guess I just wouldn't trust mine outside by himself, as he gets the call of the wild every now and again. Will be camping with him v soon. I've got a big 2 person tent, which will be enough for three of us. There's also some loops in there which while not enough to stop him moving should he really choose to, will be enough to persuade him to stay at the bottom of the tent with a little encouragement. I guess Layla might just be more inclined to be in a tent by herself. D would be out of there the minute I shut my eyes.” 11:10:47 AM 2/18/05 “Hew Ewker, how much is that....500 buckaroos?” 11:14:28 AM 2/18/05 “Embear - do you Spoon? Has anyone seen techntrek?” 11:15:24 AM 2/18/05 “Yes, I eat with a spoon every day.” 11:17:49 AM 2/18/05 “embear, 230.00 if you buy from Golite. I have one I bought last yr from Sierra Trading Post for 129.00. It doesn't come with a floor but you can buy one. I have a pc of tyvek. Plus you can leave the pole at home and string it up from a tree. If I come to Va for that trip I will probably bring it. Look for sales http://www.golitestore.com/store/NS_proddetail.asp?number=SH6106 last edited: 2/18/05 11:20:40 AM” 11:18:58 AM 2/18/05 “You don't fork?” 11:21:29 AM 2/18/05 puptent, ha ha “Gee, make a reasonable suggestion and get ignored by embear. ;-)” 11:21:54 AM 2/18/05 “Yeah, I think Yam has the smaller one. The only thing that concerns me is that millions of spiders can crawl in there and eat my face.” 11:22:34 AM 2/18/05 11:23:47 AM 2/18/05 “Sorry Stove. Your a funny bun. :)” 11:24:05 AM 2/18/05 “I would be more worried about ticks that spiders. You can't feel a tick that often and think of all the places it could crawl to.” 11:27:43 AM 2/18/05 “hmmmmm.... Y2, it doesn't say how much the "legally pink mansion tent" weighs...” 11:29:35 AM 2/18/05 “hmmm, there seems to be two doggie tents out there. Both of em listed here. But if you're getting a new tent anyway, the lighted and cheapest option would be to get one with a good vestibule, buy or make a footprint for the vestibule, and get a short, light wire to tether her to Bison with. Any attempt to escape and he'll be dragged out the tent and be the one who'll have to get her back in, leaving you warm and snug in the sleeping bag.” 11:31:37 AM 2/18/05 “Sounds good to me. :) Sorry Bison, isnt that what boyfriends are for???” 11:35:53 AM 2/18/05 “Eddy, I get ticks all the time. I dont worry bout them. Spiders are what my nightmares are made up of.” 11:37:47 AM 2/18/05 “Where is Micah ??” 11:38:11 AM 2/18/05 “I wanna know what Stikmon does with Kahtru. And Buck with his two dogs...” 12:00:20 PM 2/18/05 “Buck's and Stikmon's dogs are probably normal, so whatever they do wouldn't apply in this case... last edited: 2/18/05 12:02:46 PM” 12:02:27 PM 2/18/05 “what is normal for a dog??” 12:04:02 PM 2/18/05 “Right now I use a tarp when I'm out with my dog. I just put in an order for some notions so I can finish making my 1 person and 1 dog tent. I think it's too much to get a tent with room for an extra person when a dog takes up considerably less room.” 12:06:54 PM 2/18/05 “Well, my dog takes up as much room as I do. Bison, are you saying Layla isnt normal???? :(” 12:18:33 PM 2/18/05 “Layla is super hyper-active, you know this...” 12:19:15 PM 2/18/05 “I still say we find a way to leave Layla at home and take Hectorrrrr backpacking instead....” 12:20:46 PM 2/18/05 “Hahahahaha! He wants to come to DC with me. He is running in circles right now in the suitcase! Hectorrrr that is.... Yes, Layla is super hyper active. Does that make her non-normal? last edited: 2/18/05 12:23:49 PM” 12:22:46 PM 2/18/05 “Well yes, super hyper activity tends to be by definition not normal....” 12:25:25 PM 2/18/05
