Backpack capacity

“Hi,

I am new to this board so I hope this is not like asking about synthetic oil on a motorcycle list but...

I have an old backpack that I bought at an army navy store many years ago. I am curious as to its capacity. How can I find out its total capacity in cubic inches? I would like to find another one that holds approximately as much.

“I would think that if you stand in the packbag, then kneel down inside of it and then draw a line around your body with a Sharpy where the top of the packbag hits you. Then measure your body mass only in the part of your body that would fit down in the packbag. This should give ya a good idea.”

And I'm starting to get the sense that if I open it up completely and measure it I can compute volume. I use it a lot and the seams are starting to go and I need to replace it but I have no idea what size pack to replace it with.

“That depends a lot on your gear. Generally speaking even if you have a 5 pound tent, 4 pound sleeping bag a 4,500-5,500 ci bag will do fine. If you have say, a 3-4 pound tent, a down sleeping bag and can get everything packed down pretty small a 4,00-4,500 ci pack is a good choice.”

Do you have a gear store near you (REI, EMS or something like that?) If so, why don't you bring your pack to the store and see if someone can help you find one that is similar in size?

If you don't want to buy it in person, you can then go online and find one that you like... :-)”

“Well just but the smallest pack you can find to replace it... that was in order to use it you have to invest in ultrasmall ultralight gear to get everything to fit.
