"What I think you meant to say was that there is a lot of humor here, sprinkled with minute amounts of good advice... :-)
CadyMae sounds female to me... :-)” pinkbubelz

I kinda implied that when I said "SOME good advice with COPIUS amounts of humor"

I was trying to be nice...

I agree... female

Let's make a game of it... I'm guessing young... maybe 25. The Greatful Dead line is messing me up though. That reunion was Tuesday, May 21, 2002 and all her solo and camping adventures are recent 2004??? So I don't know. Any guesses anyone?

Oh wow! Y'all are NUTS!! OK.

My username comes from a Grateful Dead line:

(You know Katie Mae's a good girl.
Folks say she don't run around at night.)

BearMagnet, I like both links. I can appreciate nice bodies of either gender.

Cap'n jim: I ran out of room in that tiny little space they give you to write about yourself. The original one I entered started with solo camping on Martha's Vineyard in 1980 and Girl Scout camps all summer long starting at the age of 7 in New Hampshire in 1972. I edited and put only the high points and considering that I'm a Deadhead I can't really remember much too clearly before 2002 anyway.

As for Burning Man. It was my 40th birthday present to myself and I have never ever done anything that comes anywhere near as amazing. Between the orgasmatron and the life-sized working thunderdome and the flamethrowers and the moving art work and playing with Gods eyes and the disco with 1000 people dancing until dawn and the 8 story tall artwork that would appear just for one night and the nudity and the costumes and the just sheer joy and debauchery of it all... Words fail. just go. The remarkable thing is all the creativity and money and toys and 38,000 people spread across 5 miles is gone afterwards. It is the largest leave no trace event in the world.

and before you people think of those yarn and popsicle gods eyes the God's eyes at burning man was a black cloth about 20 feet across with l-wire in pale green outlining eyes that winked and blinked and looked around. It was attached to two weather balloons and the artist would just wander around the crowd and let you make God go cross eyed. At night it was totally strange to look up at the desert sky and see them.

Here's what I do to determine cubic inches. See how many kittens you can cram into your pack, including all side pockets. Keep stuffing them until the screaming and clawing becomes unbearable, then it should be pretty much full. Then take out the kittens and put them in a blender until they are liquid (but not overly-whipped) and pour the kittens into a large beaker with cubic measurements on the side and you should get an accurate measurement.

Okay, that was just plain wrong. I don't really do that. I love kittens. I don't even know why I joke around like that. Seriously. I hate myself. I don't even know who I am sometimes, but when I do, I hate myself.

The water idea would be the most accurate except you have to deal with the weight.

1 cubic foot of water weighs 62.4 #. A cubic foot = 1728 ci. So, a 3400 ci pack would be about 125#'s of water. Not fun.

What if she used dehydrated water to measure volume?

I mean that stuff weighs a hell of a lot less then hydrated water.

Well, let's break down the weight of air, then.....

I first thought just weighing the water would be the easiest way to do it, then I saw what the totals were going to be.

It looks like packing it with paper will be best afterall. Either that or packing peanuts.

As I recall, dehydrated water weighs about a 10th of hydrated water.

Not only that but you can buy it in can form at most outfitter places and it comes in all ci sizes.

Candymae... burning man sounds very interesting! Usually that's the week my hubby & I go on vacation... Maybe that will be our destination this year... :-)

Now, on with your problem of the backpack....
Grab a couple of bags of ice and pack the bag with them... :-) Make sure to do this in a cold room and be quick about it, or the ice will melt.... :-) Insert a couple of six packs in the ice until the pack is full....

Enjoy the six packs.....

Once you are done, forget about the pack size and pass out....

Lol, you gotta love this place...

My first suggestion was gonna be water, sand would be damn heavy also and it'll make a mess in your pack - you'll probably be finding sand in there 10 years from now, I got a kick out of the kitten idea...

You could always fill the pack with turds and calculate volume that way.

Too many techno geeks here, myself included. How about taking a picture of the pack and in the pick show your sleeping bag and tent rolled up. That'll give it some scale. From that it shouldn't be too hard to guess what ballpark you need.

Thank you to whoever asked me what brand. I suspect I ought not mention the brand among you experienced backpackers though. Now that I'm at home I looked up the name on the front and found the manufacturer by searching the web. The capacity is 3356ci. Which is interesting since I fit all my gear for a week in the desert in there without using the side pockets. Actually the pack has served me well for 6 years. Crawled all over New Mexico with me and boxing camp in canada and every state park in Florida. The best gear is the gear you have at home, huh.
I'm off to free the kittens.

Hey, if it works, it works. But didn't you mention it is falling apart? Either you've used the hell out of it, or it wasn't made well to begin with.

Plenty of decent packs in that size range. Might want to consider the Osprey Aether 60 or Ariel 60, depending upon your gender. They're a tad larger and are great packs.

If your pack is the one that ddx posted, you can lose 2.5 - 3 lbs with a new pack and still maintain the same volume.

What does your full pack usually weigh? Post a thorough list of your gear and you will get thorough answers.

30 lb Packing List
Currently packed for a 5 day festival where I have to pack into to the camp site, (i.e. I'm driving there but I'm not camping anywhere near my vehicle.)

Eureka Mountainpass XT solo tent
Campmor 4x7 tarp
Slumberjack Tourlite 40 sleeping bag
Thermarest LE 3/4
1 pr chuck taylor prokeds in black and grey.
2 pr bridgedale hiking socks
1 pair cargo pants
2 t-shirts
1 very small sled kite
Peak 1 SS cookset
1 burner coleman and 1 can propane
1 wool poncho that will serve as my blanket, my pillow and my jacket
1 roll-away-chair
3 travel johns from campmor
3 pencil cases filled with my necessities.
(emergen-c. first aid stuff, some cord, tape, jacknife, chap stick, earplugs, toiletries, etc.)

This doesn't require that I use the side pockets so I have the roll chair strapped to the side.

------------------

Since I'm getting shuttled to the festival area and the walk is minimal after that I also have the roll-away table and a cooler.

--------------------------

Burning Man I had a 35 pound pack with more clothes and tent stakes but no need to cook or bring water, (Green Tortoise provided those things.)

--------------------------

Canada trip my pack was 39 pounds but I packed warmer clothes.

So far I've not traveled with more than 40 but I also haven't had to cook. My stove is probably my weakest link.

Easy and cheap...
Sorry if it's already been answered:

Take some styrofoam packing peanuts. Fill up your backpack until it's as full as you can close it.

Then dump them into a cardboard box where you know the length and width. Use a ruler to measure the height the peanuts take up. Multiply l*w*h. That's your volume in cubic inches.

"But I think 3/4's thermarests suck!”

They do. I hate it but I spent a sizable chunk of money on it so I'm using it dagnabit. One main attraction of camping for me is that I don't have to spend a lot of money to have a good time. Since I bought it I'm gonna use it for a while. I have 4 other sleeping pads I alternate with but the thermarest is the most compact.

I like my 3/4 thermarest! I just stuff my clothes under my feet to keep them off the ground. Plus, I carry along a TR sport seat for campfire sitting, and when I go to bed, I stuff that under the foot of my sleeping bag.
