Light Weight Tents

“Nope, it's not in my price range for a tent. ;-)

I pretty well got out of the tent shopping mode after I bought my old style HS TarpTent Squall. I've been through some windy rainstorms in it and never got my down bag wet. The tent does require some common sense to set up, so it's not a tent for everyone.

“Yogi..when I "upgrade" my hiking partner I am looking for someone "close" for my tent (LOL). My present considerations are for bags that will zip together purely for "body heat conservation" (LOL)”

i sent in a question... pointing out the henry shires's warranty is only good for 90 days from the date of purchase. i also asked if it was seam sealed with silicone or something else because henry shires only warranties for silicone... no warranty = less value.”

“i would rather buy one new from henry than from this person at 200 + 10 shipping. then you get the 90 day try it and return if you don't like it warranty from henry.”

“I have heard mixed reviews of the cuben material. I was looking at the Refuge x made of the same material but Six Moons wouldn't warranty the fabric so I said no.”

“the material they make the inner tent wall of the hilleberg tents is amazing. it's a mesh but it's waterproof... i kid you not. you can make a pocket of the mesh and fill it with water and it will make a water ball... but when you touch it the water all comes pouring out. it has something to do with surface tension. these modern fabrics are amazing!”

I wouldn't buy anything 2nd hand unless it was at least $50.00 less than new,and even less if its been used a lot and depending on how old it is as well.

“I got a new HS Rainbow this summer--it performed brilliantly in much wind and heavy downpour in Honduras this last June, but not so great in the Sierras. I put it up right as a storm was hitting, I was on hard sand/gravel on granite and tied it down with rocks--it handled the wind just fine, but the 1/2 inch hail for half an hour caused a bit of mist to splash up through the netting. I covered my bag and clothes up with my rain coat, but if I'd been sleeping and hadn't noticed the mist my bag could have gotten wet. Should I have just gotten out and tied it down all the way to the ground instead of up a couple inches? Or is that just unusual due to the large hail for so long causing extra splashing? Made me feel a bit insecure about sleeping during a hailstorm!”

“Sunny, love (most of) that review. And I agree with Yogi. I owned the first generation Squall and when up in Yosemite in July I had 3-4 inches of snow fall through the night. I had to kick the snow off the tarptent a couple of times cause the weight made it sag. It performed really great I think for a 3 season. I just put it down to a rare weather phenom and not judge the whole tent on something like that.”
