I do not travel well these days, and I am looking at a 12 hour drive in April.
What can I take?

something strong enough to knock me out but be able to wake up and hike 6 miles in the morning.

gemini has me scared to take benadryl for fear I may start jumping on the roof of the car...

go away maple.
hey...the benadryl works fine, BUT do not drink any alcohol, not even a sip. I had one drink, and you saw...so benadryl and no alcohol.

ehhh....why benadryl for car sickness though? you can buy some stuff at the store especially for car sickness. Forgot the name, but I bought it once because my son is getting car sick too.

Dramamine works well for my kids, usually. Your doctor might prescribe you scopolamine patches if you act sufficiently pitiful, and can't take Dramamine for some reason.

Dramamine will make you drowsy, yes, but almost everything you can take for motion sickness will.

Cure for car sickness (especially if your "developing" the illness): open a window and move your eyes more.

Your spatial orientation sense is what causes this type of sickness.

In a closed vehicle:

The eyes see the motion.

The inner ears are receiving maybe a slight signal of motion, but it won't correspond to what the eyes are receiving.

The skin pressure receptors such as in the joints and spine detect no motion

The muscle and joint sensory receptors detect no motion

The central nervous system gets these conflicting signals and determines the system must have ingested some type of poisoning to cause sensory conflict.

Opening the window creates a "changing environment" the other systems pick up. Move your eyes more helps reinforce motion.

So, tying her to the roof would probably fix the problem, no?

Facing forward on her stomach would be best. No good in having her looking at an unchanging sky.

I don't think you can call it kayaking when the kayak is strapped to the top of your car.

Sure you can, if you strap a kiddy pool full of water on the roof and float the yak in it.

I hate Dramamine it knocks me out and I am completely unable to function while I'm on it.

Bonine, however is a godsend for me! It works like a miracle-- I am not motion sick when I take it AND I am alert and awake enough to enjoy the ride... :-)

Both, however, MUST be taken at least 45 minutes to an hour before you get into the car, or neither will work!

BTW-- Benadryl has the same active ingredient as most sleeping pills...

Another good thing to carry with you, if you get motion sick or queasy (in addition to Bonine) is either candied ginger, or Ginger capsules or Ginger Candy (find it in an Asian Grocery store-- but make sure it's made of ginger, not just ginger flavoring). I think I've also seen the ginger candy at Trader Joe's and The Whole Foods Store. Ginger is great for easing a queasy stomach--it really helps to get rid of nausea....

so my options are as follows

riding on top of car in or out of a kayak
chlorform

or

Dramamine

hmm tough one.
I thin I will try Dramamine

Be sure and take the Dramamine 30 minutes or so before you start on your trip. It has to get into your system, or you will still be barfing.

Bit-- 30 minutes isn't enough time...45 to an hour before is better. (trust me, I took it on a whale watching trip and was still slightly green the whole time..)

Try these before using medications:
Are you usually a passenger in a car? That sometimes makes me sick because I'm not as aware of the road/surroundings as I would be if I'm in control on the vehicle. Try being the main driver and you might find you're motion sickness is eliminated (or at least decreased).

Also try consuming small quantities of food and drink, rather than a full meal, before and during the drive. Helps keep your digestive trct from becoming nausiated.

LOLOLO

as for eating. no that only makes it ten times worse.

I am not big on being the driver. tree is the main driver in our family.
I just max out after 2 hours and then all hell breaks out

Mapleleaf-- too bad you are not from the midwest. We have an incredible ginger ale called "Vernors" that does wonders in helping to keep the queasiness down. (My childhood pediatrician used to recommend it to help sooth our stomachs when we had the flu or nausea/vomiting.) But, don't try to substitute with Canada Dry Ginger ale-- there is no comparison in the gingery quality.)

That and a nice bowl of rice gruel would also help. (Real raw rice bowled in lots of water until it's like mush-- you can probably use a cream of rice--it's also easily digested and very bland.)

Here's another trick - if you start to feel queasy, stick a needle in your eye for distraction.

I believe your Central Nervous System will forget all about vomitting.

Hey, maybe that's why getting stoned fights nausea.

Ok, let's get this straight. Benadryl is for allergies. And yes it does make you tired and yes it is the sleep ingredient in things like Tylenol PM.

We are talking about car sickeness tho. Anyhoo. Another vote for ginger. It's the best! If you don't like the taste of it, then just get the capsules. They have them everywhere.
And you could try those sea sickness bands you wear on your wrists. They are excellent! My mom and I always use them when whale watching or on snorkel trips, where the boat engine is off and the boat is a rockin'. They work for car sickness as well.

Pink they have Vernor's here too. I've seen it at most of our grocery stores in the Seattle area. So maple may be able to find it near her too. But if she doesn't like the taste of it, it will do no good, ; )

My sister-in-law tends to get car sick if she sits in the back seat. If she sits co-pilot she's fine. Saw this personally when we were on a hiking trip in California. She admits to have taken her Draminine too late.

Dramamine works wonders. That's whats in those little arm band/patch things you use to keep from getting sick on a boat.

back seat is the worst!

I am such a backseat driver. I get yelled at by tree all the time.
I have my own break on the passenger side of the car

The wrist bands I'm talking about are just elastic with a little bead on it that is positioned over a pressure point on the wrist (there are instructions, don't worry) Not to be confused with DDX's Dramamine patches.

I plan on taking one of those wrist bands and stretch it over Pixie's head and position the little bead over a pressure point on her temple for not getting me a birthday present ;) That is my E-motion sickness medication.
