Just 2
I use a lg caribou (infinetely adjustible) internal frame day pack mostly.

My backpack is a 30 year old composite flexible external frame coleman that I love. I did replace the shoulder straps & hip belt with a really nice setup.

I like decent hip belt & shoulder straps. I like packs that have a LOT of adjustments for them. My day pack can be adjusted as I'm walking.

I guess the backpack is the one thing I eonomize on. One backpack, Jack Wolfskin Atlas, I think.

Did just break down and buy a nice little day pack from the Sportsmen Guide. Some type of High Peak pack by Air Texas. Hydration sleeve, is arched to keep it off your back with mesh right by your back, hip belt (was having trouble finding them on packs in the cheapo price range I was hoping to find -- and did find with this bag). Might be heavy, have not weighed it. I use it to daily haul stuff around and on dayhikes pile it full for good exercise.

The pack: http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=155060

Aussie ?? or Kiwi

or is that an Aussie thing?”

Macpac is a New Zealand company.
Remember the America's cup race off San Diego ?
The NZ boat won and the Aussie boat sank.

On a more serious note I am not aware of any packs that use canvas here. Cordura nylon seems to be the favorite. The UK (Karrimor) uses canvas also.
Nylon must be lined with polyethelene to make it waterproof where canvas the fibers swell when wet keeping the pack waterproof without a lining.
I used to have a Paddy Pallins pack from NSW, on one trip I fell into a river, undid the pack and got myself out, went back on a rope to retrieve the pack, and the contents were still dry. Awesome pack, eventually the canvas rotted.

I have 4...
Kelty Trekker - oldest pack, external frame heavy haul workhorse.

Kelty Redwing - frameless front load (I removed the stays) weekend pack. My favorite.

Osprey Aether - newest pack. For trips longer than a weekend. I'm not crazy about the top loading yet.

Go-Lite daypack. Small summer overnight pack.

I lightened all of my packs, cutting of unused pockets, lash straps, excess strap length, etc. It's easy to chop off 6-8 ounces.
