The thing I'm going to miss most is fresh fruits and vegetables. Lots of days, I buy a basket of strawberries and eat the whole thing all at once. And I eat tons of salad.

How much weight per day did 5000 calories per day amount to?

They do have fresh fruits and vegies at the resupply places-except for MTR. Peaches, plums, apples and a whole lot of fruits and vegies will keep ,sort of, fresh for days.
I take regular food and stuff to the back country. It's more fun for me to eat good food out there. It's heavy (about 1.5 lbs/day), but my base weight is about 12 pounds.

1.5 lbs/day sounds average to me, but I don't think my 1.5 lbs yields up 5000 calories. I don't carry along fresh fruit 'cause it's too heavy, but I will pig out on it whenever I can. I wish I could send strawberries in my resupply boxes.

Reds Meadow resupply update
I just called Reds Meadow. They will store our resupply boxes for $1/day each. It is okay if I drop them off and include fuel. The only fuel for sale there is white gas!!!
There is no size limit on the boxes, other than common sense. So if you guys all want to mail me your resupply stuff and tell me what kind of fuel to buy, I will buy your fuel drop off all our fuel and food in one box on my way to the Sierra Rendezvous mid-July.
I will call the Tuolumne Meadows store when they open to confirm I can do the same with them and let everyone know.

I will take you up on your offer to purchase the fuel locally, and send you the $ for the fuel and the resupply boxes. I like the idea of putting everybody's supplies in one big box so we only incur a $1/day charge.

I did find out on-line that UPS will ship butane canisters ground only if the outside of the package is properly labels. Doing it your way seems simpler. Thanks.

I've been reading the Muir Ranch website, and it would be economical for us to ship our resupplies together. They charge $45/5-gallon bucket, but no one of us needs the whole bucket. We could get 2, maybe 3 people's food in one 5-gallon bucket.

Any takers? Pros, if you want to add your Muir Trail stuff to the other stuff you're sending me, I'll put it in a bucket and send it with mine. Just keep it all separated. It could be years before you appreciated the humor in the situation if you had all your breakfasts from Tuolumne to Reds, lunches from Reds to V V R, and dinners from Muir to Vidette Meadow.

Also, if we do continue on and stay at Reds Meadow campground, there's a charge -- $18, if I remember right.

Here's a link to fuel shipping information. I still want to check with USPS and read my canister label, but it looks like fuel canisters can be shipped, but only 3 at a time. That's good news, huh? http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?id=85648
If this info is correct, strike-anywhere matches can't be shipped.

I will comply with all of your suggestions, and ship you my Muir Trail Ranch package also.

Take a look at MTR site and FAQs. It's pretty interesting.

I'm off to do a long hike today. I hardly walked for the first 3 weeks in May, but have started up again. I can feel the loss in conditioning from the time off. Bummer, but it was worth it since I went to see my sister in KC, and I'll get it back again.

Reds Meadow
Hey Wanna, according to Red's Meadow's website, the packages do have size restrictions. You might want to make sure you get a name with the person who told you otherwise :)

These are food resupply points I finally settled on:

Tuolumne Meadows - at 31.3 miles (end of day 3)

Reds Meadows - at 70.1 miles (middle of day 8)

Muir Trail Ranch - at 121.6 miles (end of day 12)

Vidette Meadows - at 192.5 miles (end of day 19) by Trailtrekker

Me, too, but now I'm thinking of mailing shampoo and cookies to VVR. On the HST, I didn't have my usual loss of appetite with altitude and hiking.
